I am. I always love the opening ceremonies!

So, Canadians, who do you think will light the calderon tonight?

I remember the Atlantic Olympics when Mohammed Ali lit the calderon – very emotional.

Nothing will ever surpass China’s display last time, even that beautiful opening in Greece. Wow – that was amazing to the point of scary (thousands of performers in unison.)

The torch bearer ran through the town where I work in 1996, and he donated the torch to our museum. We have it hanging with a plaque just outside my office. He stopped by with his family recently to see it. Cute athelete.

What time do they start? (EST)

6:30 central time which would be 7:30 eastern.

Of course I’m going to watch!  I’m a sucker for big public theatre and the olympic opening ceremonies are waaay up there.  I still have my crumbling VHS tape of the Albertville ones – it was like Cirque De Soleil meets Dr, Seuss!  I also have the Beijing ones recorded – one thing the Chinese do very well is to get a whole lot of people doing the same thing at the same time in precision unison.

I was one of the Stage Managers for the 1994 World Cup (soccer) Opening Ceremonies in Chicago so I have a bit of an idea just what is involved in this kind of thing.  After that experience I find that I notice the “invisible people” – the ones with the megaphones, or radios, giving cues and holding lines – because that’s what I did.

I also like the Winter Olympics a little more than the Summer games because of the sheer goofiness of some of the sports.  I mean, Luge has GOT to have started as a bar bet – “Hey Sven, I’ll bet you won’t go down the bobsled run on your kid’s sled!”  Or Curling – “OMG we’ve been snowed in for 3 months I’m SOOOOOO bored!  Well, I’ve got a big rock and a couple of brooms….”

I set up a worktable in my living room so I can work on some big sewing projects while I am glued to the TV for the next 2 weeks.

I do think it may very well be Wayne Gretzky to light the cauldron. Canada = Hockey = Gretzky in the international eye.
I would like Neigey to light it, though.

Petzy, Neigey is too short to reach the calderon otherwise, I’d love to see him do it LOL.

I cried when Mohamed Ali lit the Calderon!

I am a total sucker for the Olympics. I will have to watch highlights on the Internet. No channels on my TV.

That’s right I forgot he was part monkey! Either that or he could climb on Deidra’s back, that is if she would let him.

Chances are higher for Neigey to be sitting on Wayne Gretzky’s shoulder while he is lighting the Olympic cauldron tonight, than for him to ever climb on Deirdra’s back.

I find winter olympics pretty boring. I did see the torch run through our City though, that was kind of neat. That was way before Christmas, do they keep the flame going the entire time?

The only olympic events I watch is the equestrian events which are the summer games.

I was saddened to hear about the death of the 21 year old Russian luge-ist (is that the right term?) this morning. My son is going snowboarding this weekend and I’m going to use the story to insist he wear protective headgear (not that he listens to reason).
We’ll try to catch the ceremonies if our DTV will cooperate. We’ve had nothing but crummy signal for weeks now…some boon THIS was!

                                Is there satellite coverage also?

French is here too where I am. My town is named after the French family that first settled here. There are more French here in my community than any other group.

I was hoping Shania Twain would sing at the Opening Ceremonies, but no. But I loved the cauldron of Fire & Ice!

Today I watched the first hockey match in my life! Still getting familiar to the rules, I found it’s fantastic sport. I got involved immediately. There was only one accident that after watching for 10 min, I started to realize that’s a girl team. They wore too much. Anyway, good for Canadian girls! I’ll keep stay on the side of Canada, maybe with one exception when Canada vs. China. I’ll stay in the middle.
By the way, Vancouver is so beautiful!

MB, I visited Vancouver for work, but luckily travelled with a co-worker/friend who grew up there. It was so much fun! Such a beautiful city and I was lucky to have a native to show me around when we weren’t working (and the company we worked with was pretty fun, so it was a good trip overall). I can’t wait to go back there for vacation some day. I love the pacific northwest in general, so I think we should make it our next vacation destination. Have you been to Victoria? I was there with family some years back and thought that was a beautiful place too.

So sad about the young guy who died on the luge 🙁 I watched the video of his run (wish I hadn’t) and it was very scary. I don’t know how anyone can do a sport that involves travelling at 90 miles per hour! It’s surprising that more people don’t die doing it. Especially the skeleton (face first, much smaller sled).

Lancy, glad to see you’re enjoying hockey! My college had an excellent hockey team, so it was very popular to get season tickets and I saw every home game for 3 years. One of my favorite sports! Half my family is from far northern Michigan (basically Canada) so I guess hockey is in my blood ;-)Wait until you see a men’s game – the men are more phsyical than the women and fights break out at times. It’s fun to watch!

Hahaha. Well, technically they’re not supposed to fight 😉 But it happens! They’re allowed to slam each other into walls and things, and sometimes that turns into punching matches (and then players are either put in the penalty box or kicked out of the game, if it’s a bad enough fight). Unfortunately no prizes for the best fighter, but the worse fighter might win a bloody nose or a black eye

I was suggested not to live there at least at the beggining, if I would like to improve my English. People from same culture may communicate without words, or the mother language comes naturally. I’m planning to settle in a English community and “dissolve” myself into it . My wife would be the only “my people”.

Here in Winnipeg we’ve got a small but active Chinese community. Much smaller than Edmonton’s. And although there’s not as many places to get it we’ve got some half-decent dim sum here. We’ve also got a big festival of nations kind of thing every summer that celebrates the various cultural influences and communities in the city, called Folklorama.

When I visited for work, I went with a friend who grew up there and his family is Chinese. He took me down to the suburb where they live and we visited a traditional Chinese grocery store to get some snacks (I think it was specifically a Hong Kong grocery store). It was pretty cool! The food was excellent.

Just watching him fly down the course at 90mph I was thinking “This is a bad idea. I shouldn’t be watching this.” The actual crash wasn’t exactly graphic – just very sudden and shocking. But it’s not hard to imagine when you see how ridiculously fast they’re going. I still can’t fathom why you’d want to fly around a course made of ice at 90mph!
