Because I impulsively bought one yesterday!  A friend of mine likes mice (only pet she is allowed to get because they are small lol) and her mouse passed recently so she went to buy another and I was with her.  So we tell the worker she needs a mouse and he gets a tiny box, picks a random one up by the tail and says “$1.25”.  Then this big dude walks in the store and says while the cage is open he needs 5 big ones.  No doubt for a snake.  And of course I get sad because I watched the worker grab up 5 mice that cant get away and I know they wont be alive much longer.  So I instantly decided I was getting a mouse!  He is soooooo teeny tiny, idk how ill not lose him.  I guess mice dont get out unless you hold them the whole time or if they are in one of those exercise balls.  I told my mom, she was not happy, and when I got home she didn’t even want to take a look at him.  Well I went into the kitchen to start dinner and a few minutes later I walk back in and she has her face pressed up against the side of the cage!  She thinks he is cute and funny now.  I think its a he, but no name as of yet but right now I call him Algernon (loved that book).    But since he was a complete implulse buy *bad Liz* I know nothing.  Does anyone happen to know any good sites, forums etc.?  I can’t imagine its all that difficult to care for a mouse but really I havent done any reading yet.

Unrelated: The trio thing is off.  Lucy started acting up and chewing carpet and throwing water bowls.  Hammer satrted to get short with Lucy.  Mae was an angel.  Lots of poop from all three, but thats a given.  So I stopped switching cages.  Maybe over the summer when I have tons of time.

Not really good pictures, but the little thing never stops moving!

Here is his lovely pink home, complete with wheel and upstairs loft

Look how tiny!  But he can get that wheel going pretty good.

        Coming downstairs from his loft

Toliet paper tubes are definitely a fav

How cute! I had two retired classroom pet mice. I like the pink CritterTrail. Make sure he doesn’t escape

Im so nervous he will escape one day! Id never find him. At least all the cats and dogs don’t seem to interested. I just counted up my animals, now its at 10! Soon to be 11 most likely, I want him to have a friend but idk if they fight if they dont know each other. Have to look that up!

I once found a mouse outside the apartment complex I lived in – it was cold and rainy and I picked her up and took her inside. Turns out she was pregnant and had 6 babies – 3 males and 3 females. I let the females live in pairs and the males were all separated because I understood that the males would fight. I found homes for a few of them. They were adorable but I could not hold them. Mine were all red eyed whites as well. I suppose you’d have to know the sex of your new little mousey.

mine escaped. My friend’s daugter left their cage open. They just crawled over the top of the crittertrail and stayed close by. They also escaped when they were still in the classroom. They were free an entire weekend! A school janitor had left the cage open one Friday night and when the teacher was preparing for class on Monday morning he noticed some noises in the bookshelf, haha.
My two were females. They loved to eat huge dead flies sometimes, so gross.

So cute!! I’ve never owned a mouse, but I’ve had well over a dozen gerbils and I assume they’re pretty similar? The diet part is where I’m not sure – hamsters and gerbils are omnivores, unlike rabbits, but I’m not sure about mice. Not that I ever fed my gerbils insects or anything, but I can assume dietary needs would be different (higher protein for gerbils maybe). Unfortunately there really isn’t much information out there!

As for gender, you should be able to tell pretty easily by whether he has testes or not. Sometimes they can take longer to show up (6 months or so) but they’ll be there in a male and be pretty obvious. I’ve gone into pet stores and looked into a mouse tank to clearly see a few males running around with the females. They’re only tricky to tell when they’re babies (which he might be).

eta: Good question about friends. I’ve seen large numbers of female mice all together so I would assume they get on relatively well. Don’t know about males. Gerbils need to be bonded the same way you would rabbits, but I have no clue about mice.

I had to get my vet to sex my babies and he basically did it by comparison so I had a box for each sex because they all looked alike to me. I never even checked their sex parts after that.

Mice and gerbils enjoy eating insects, especially grasshoppers. It is part of their diet. I wanted to bond my one surviving mouse to a gerbil when the other mouse had died. I was advised not to. The gerbil would have most likely hurt or killed the mouse.

Yeah, gerbils can get very nasty. I had two brothers start fighting after the third brother died (after living together for 2 years) and it got bloody very quickly. I separated them and never even attempted to re-bond because they were older anyway. Most people say female-female pairs are most likely to break up, but all of my female pairs have been just fine. I definitely wouldn’t let a mouse anywhere near them! They’re very much like bunnies in how very territorial they can be.

Sarita, it is pretty hard to tell with babies. Not as hard as bunnies, but I could usually figure out baby gerbils (mice are smaller and probably harder). But once the little boy parts get big enough, they’re hard to ignore. Haha. They kind of stick out under the tail.

I”ve had male mice, currently have a female one. The two male ones were housed together and began fighting, so I had to seperate them. I feed them Mazuri Rat and Mouse blocks. They are large blocks that have most of the nutritional need.

I keep going to the cage at the pet store and watch them run on their wheels, I told hubby someday I’m gonna have a pet mouse again. He said If I get one, it has to be a girl. He doesn’t like looking at the boy bits lol.

MirBear, my mom always said that the gerbils were a bit creepy, especially their toenails, and would never hold them. Over the years though, she did get pretty fond of them 🙂 As long as their little toenails didn’t touch her … lol

It’s funny, but cleaning up after the gerbils was way worse than cleaning up after the bunny. I hated dumping all of the shavings out of that big heavy cage. Plus I’m allergic, so I would sneeze for an hour afterwards. Otto is much easier! All I have to dump is a little litter box.

I still kind of want more though …

I have to agree with you Elrohwen about gerbils being worse to clean up after than a bunny. We have a very old gerbil named Lil’ Kim the man at the pte store told us they live about 3 years and she is well into her 4 th year and is still going strong. Her black fur is now peppered with gray ,she is a very sweet little gerbil but I dont let my kids hold her anymore I am afaid she is just too old and I dont want her stressed out she likes pets though Her cage shavings are soo messy we are constantly sweeping them up and when its time to clean whoo smelly in her potty spot and of course there is more shaving mess . It is always a full out sweep and mop and disifect when we are done .Sweet little animal though very funny personality.

Lol Bunnyliz I did the same thing you did when I was about 13! My mom let me take the bus for the first time by myself. So, I embarked on a random adventure on the 43 south . . .. and wound up at a Petsmart. Mum had given me $5 to buy lunch. I saw these two feeder mice playing the adorable game on an exercise wheel and I just couldn’t stand the thought of such friendly critters being food. So, you can guess where my mom’s money went >< . They were both males, named Al (short for Albino) and Maverick. Maverick escaped constantly and burrowed into my mattress! One night I cought him running across my hanging clothes in the closet! I fed them out of ice cube trays, putting different foods and water in the little slots, so that they could forage like they would in the wild. Ah, you're in for a fun, smelly time Bunnyliz

Oh dear. 0_o My first thought was the little kitten with the pin in it’s leg (don’t recall what you named it, sorry!) getting a gander at your new arrival. 0_0

Well I think it’s adorable and Algernon is definitely the best name! ^_^

Sad story. I had a friend in elementary school who had a bunch of mice. I went to her birthday party and, against her mother’s wishes, she took all the mice out for the girls to see while we were there. Her favorite was a black and white spotted one. So don’t you know that’s the one that, while the group got rowdy, got stepped on and it’s back broken. It was the worst thing I’d ever seen.

I like mice, but I have cats. It’s just not a good idea. >.<
I also like doves, but can’t have one for the same reason.
Actually, hubby is not letting me get any other animals. So there goes my rabbit rescue he said he would let me open. (told you so)

I had 2 mice for a while until they died of old age- they were much smellier than hamsters and gerbils in my opinion- I even had spiney mice before.  Males are generally smellier than females.  And mice can come in such pretty colors now- satin, brindle, merle, etc.

Mice are heavy chewers so I would try offering an apple branch or something to get the mouse to chew on something good instead of any plastic edges.

I don’t think that mice are predisposed to bite like a hamster might- which is a plus.

BUT if you bought this mouse from a tank that sells feeder mice- and it was raised for a feeder mouse just be warned that it is common for them to be severely inbred and have fur mites- which might be able to be passed on to the bunnies.  If you got the mouse from a reputable pet store and they are sold as pet mice- and some are spotted, colored, etc- then there can be more care put into breeding and keeping them.

Katnip, what are spiney mice? *is getting an image of some kind of prehistoric-looking creature with spikes on it’s back*

Sometimes even the ones who are sold as pets have the mites too. It’s just how pet stores treat these poor creatures. And having read Lintini’s threads about her guinea pigs, it agree would probably be best to be sure he’s clean & healthy.

Do vets take care of mice? 0_o How do you get mites off if they have them?

Many people end up having to treat their reptiles also after feeding mice with mites.   But an exotic vet would treat a mouse with mites.

I always liked gerbils because they’re more crepuscular like bunnies and tend to be awake whenever you’re home (even more so than my bunny – he doesn’t care if I’m home, he’s going to sleep all afternoon!)

I have had regular Syrian hamsters- the large type- in long hair, short hair, rex, calico, etc.

I have also had many of the dwarf hamsters- Russian- typical dwarf,  Winter White (more of an exotic- they turn from regular color to white in winter- or specific light conditions) and I have had Robo’s.   Robo’s are very cute- but they are also very fast- so they are more of a “watch and see” pet than a cuddle pet.  They are tiny and super fast- though so very cute.

It used to be very difficult to get Winter Whites, Robos, and Chinese hamsters about 6-7 years ago- but now most of the large pet store chains are selling them.

I also had Siamese/ Burmese gerbils (1 pair) when there where not many in the Midwest?Michigan area.  I think the spiny mice are not very common though- and I had a friend that had pygmy mice- and those definitely were not handleable- very tiny and very fast.

Gerbils and chinese hamsters are illegal in California though many people seem to have them anyway.

For awhile I bred hamsters and had a few gerbil litters- I drove to Canada twice- once for hamsters and the second time as a meet up with other hamster/small critter owners from Canada and the East Coast- and that is when I got the gerbils.  My last gerbil died about a week ago- it feels so odd to have all of them gone now.  Gerbils are usually much longer lived than hamsters.  I had some that I was so attached too- and cried so hard when I lost them.

But I keep telling myself that I am not going to get any more little critters- the 3 bunnies are more than enough.  Though it was nice to be able to give the gerbil the stuff the parrots picked thru and did not eat and left in their bowl.

Algernon is going good, all settled in and lovin his pink cage I think. He does get kinda loud at night with his darn wheel! Now I have 4 animals to wake me up at night, one plus is his wheel is quieter then bunnies, one minus is he doesnt stop when you tell him to so he keeps at it for at least 20 minutes. Not that the bunnies usually stop whatever they are doing though. They stop for a minute, you get soooooo close to sleep, then they start up again and your instantly awake!!! And the process goes on and on lol.

It makes sense since pythons are such a big problem in Florida. I think ferrets are also illegal in several states.

The dark brown guy was my last one and he passed a few months ago. They were so cute!

                                                                                                                  Aww, so cute!

I had a little mouse, Milo, who was a rescued feeder. He live to be about two and half years. If yours is still a baby I’d consider trying to introduce a second of the same gender. They don’t mix well when they get older, but they are social and do well with companions. I regret never getting Milo a buddy.

Also, consider getting the Silent Spinner: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753369&lmdn=Product+Type. It is a QUIET wheel and will be your best friend. I’ve never heard another wheel that didn’t make a horrible racket. Just make sure to take the axle out when washing so it doesn’t seize up.

Don’t worry about him running away, as long as you keep the cage closed. Milo never escaped. They jump high though, so always keep a cover above them.

Milo was a live for a little while when I got Quincy, and I kept Milo’s cage on the floor under my desk. Quincy didn’t pay much attention to him, but Milo wanted Quincy soooo bad! He would poke his nose through the bars and reach out with his tiny paws. It was cute!

Haha. Maybe with mice they’re better because mice are lighter, but my gerbils ran so much that the whole thing was tilted to the side and broken in just a few months. Otherwise I really liked those wheels. They need one with the axel supported on both sides with the same mechanism.

Milo spent almost all his waking hours on that thing and that never happened! Gerbils must be much heavier. Did you keep yours on the stand or attached to the cage? I always attached it to the cage.

Elrowhen, those Gerbils are so cute too.

My brother had Gerbils when we were younger but he didn’t know what the heck he was doing.

I do love the mini hamsters even though people say they are unsociable. I have a soft spot for them because I got a brother and sister rescue. Brother was a doll. Sister was a trip – she had problems, we got both of her little eyes taken out – she had so many problems from inbreeding but I loved her spunk.

I also had a Teddy Hamster named Jasmine who only had one eye and I LOVED her.

I don’t want anymore but I love them alot. They aren’t given the respect they deserved and they aren’t understood about their care either.

Oh, that’s probably it, Battie. I never attached it to the cage because they had an aquarium – nowhere to attach it. That probably made all the difference.

Then the boys broke the second wheel and I gave them a metal one they couldn’t break. Haha.
