Ok so im not sure about the rest of you but I like to buy a TON of veggies when I go shopping for Loki, as in a lot fo different types and quantity.  I am having a problem though.  I dont like keeping them in like 20 different bags at once.  So this time I put some of the vitamin A veggies together in a bag and will just reach in and grab when I make up her meal.  My question is, what do you guys use to store your veggies in?  Any suggestions as to a large container that I can purchase thats good for veggies?  I was thinking of putting all the veggies I get chopped up and in one big container so that I can mix then up and just grab the amount I need that way each day she is getting a different variety of veggies??

suggestions VERY welcome!  thanks in advance!

I like these veggie bags.  I don't like containers because they take up lots of space at least with the bags you can manipulate them more. I have 8 rabbits and 2 refrigerators and it's mainly for greens.

I don't do anything sophisticated as far as chopping and mixing though.  My routine every morning after cleaning the rabbits room is to take out all the veggies and then put them in their bowls and then take them to their areas and just drop the veggies in the middle of the floor.

thanks sarita! ya I just have one bun, shes eats about 3-4 cups of veggies a day, and she gets her veggies in a bowl or whatever I can find big enough to put them in at the time haha!

You can buy something similar by Debbie Meyer I believe HOWEVER they are way too small. I believe BunnyLuv custom makes these and part of the profit goes to their rescue. They are large - the size isn't consistent, but I don't care too much. Sometimes they tear though but I make do with them. With these I think you can mix up your salad and store them in there and just take out the handfuls you need when you need them.

I have a lot of luck just using a plastic dishtub. I put some paper towels in the bottom so water from the veggies doesn't pool and a damp dishcloth over the top and as long as I remember to keep the cloth damp they stay fairly fresh and crisp for almost a week. I wash them before I put them in so they're good and damp and stir them up each time I get it out so the same ones aren't sitting on the bottom. I can get two of these tubs on the bottom shelf of the fridge.
My Bunny Burrow is full! Pringles & Toby, Daisy & Lola, and my senior citizens Hershey & Simba.
The piggies are back, add Brownie and Sweetpea to the mix.

I only buy lettuce (it's the only thing Otto will eat) so I typically just buy 3-4 heads of different types and stack them in the fridge in their bags. Lettuce keeps a while this way, but herbs and other things definitely don't! I have no problem keeping lettuce like this for 7-9 days and since we grocery shop every week I don't need it to last longer than that.

I considered getting it some day if Otto decides to eat other veggies (or I get another bun that will eat other veggies)

I tried pretty much everything (as seen on TV green bags, plastic bags, etc.) but ended up at the DOLLAR STORE in town.  They have containers similar to tupperware in a variety of sizes.  I have bought many but settled on two that are about 1' wide, 1 1/2' long & 8" deep.  They fit PERFECT on the bottom shelf of the fridge & cost me a whole $2.00!!!  When I get home from the produce market, I wash everything (except the berries as they last longer if you don't) and use a salad spinner to get all moisture off them.  With a paper towel on the bottom & top, they stay fresh for well over a week.  Sometimes I will trim the stems if they get a little brown, but that is even rare.  When I feed them, I rinse them so there is moisture as they are not big water drinkers.  The one with the dark green top is for their greens and the yellow for their fruits, carrots, berries, etc.  They also have tubs we use for litter that are a perfect size for 1 bun.  We have an under-the-bed container for their bedroom, but use the smaller one in the family room when they are out in the daytime.  Good luck!!!

Elrohwen, when I saw the title of this thread, that container was what I was going to suggest! Ashlee, I have one of those containers and it works out great! I found that my little crisper drawer in the fridge isn't big enough, but this one you can just put on the shelf and it keeps the veggies nice and crisp for longer than if you just kept them in those plastic bags from the grocery store. And it looks nice and neat in there! I hate how the veggies are damp when you bring them home from the store since they spray them with water on the shelves, so the container allows the water to drain off. I don't bother cutting the veggies up, I just take out a couple handfuls of whatever and rinse them for Leroy. Though, if you do cut them, the container would hold a lot more. Usually I can fit a head of romaine lettuce in there and a bunch of parsley or something. I have to keep the bigger stuff like dandelion and turnip greens in the crisper drawer since theyre too long, but if you cut them up anyway, you'd be able to get those in the container. I only have one bunny so between that container and the crisper drawer, I'm set for a week, maybe a couple days longer.

For the most part I keep my veggies in a small furry thing with paws.

Seriously, I have a bottom crisper drawer of my fridge that I have lined with a large, thin cloth (they are called flour sack cloths). I set the fresh veggies on it in the drawer, then fold the edges of the cloth over them from the back, sides and front. I've been amazed how much longer they keep. Since I squish about two or 3 heads of varied greens in the drawer together I pluck from each one for a handful, then fold the cloth back over the whole thing.

LucyTwoBunz, I love my salad spinner! We had it before the bun and rarely used it, but now I use it every single night. I fill it up (it helps me measure the veggies), rinse them off in the strainer part, then spin quickly to get the majority of water off, leaving them a bit wet for hydration. When I was visiting my parents, I was so annoyed at having to rinse veggies off in the sink and having no way to dry them! Haha. I'm spoiled.

Barbie, I'm glad you like that lettuce keeper thing! I've thought about getting it too. Our crisper drawers are packed full of veggies for us, so Otto's stuff has to go on one of the shelves anyway. It would be nice to have a neat container to keep them in, especially because green and red leaf lettuce tend to wilt very fast when kept in the bags. That container would be especially useful to make a pre-chopped and washed veggie blend - you could mix it all up at the beginning of the week and then just pull out handfuls as the week went on.

A long while ago, after we got Max, I started dividing all the veggies up and wrapping them in "days". After the grocery store, I lay out x number of paper towels and separate the greens into equal amounts, and then roll them up in paper towels. This way I can just grab a roll from the fridge and they have all their veggies in one pack. No messing around with multiple bags. This is ESPECIALLY helpful in the mornings when my time is limited!

This is 6 days worth of veggies for two buns.

Each pile is one day and includes the variety of greens.  This pile looks like romaine, escarole, and parsley... I tear off 3 or 4 more paper towels in a row and tightly roll the veggies up.  They stay fresh in the veggie drawer for a long time with no bags...

At the end, I have multiple "single-serving" veggie rolls.  Before I was having to open 3 or 4 bags per day, now I don't have to mess around with it.  Just grab, wash, and feed.

Beka and RabbitPam, those are both really creative ideas for storing veggies! If I had to keep more veggies in the house I'd consider doing something like that!

Ashlee and Elrohwen, if you go look for that BB&B container, check at Walmart. That's where I got mine. It's the exact same thing, but I seem to remember mine costing less than the one listed online... I have always loved Bekas Rolls - I am not as tidy, however. Twice a week, I buy a large amount of greens, rip them up and put them in the Really big Ziploc bags - as in the Storage sized bags that you can use for clothes... I put paper towels at the bottom to soak up any excess moisture and just mix the greens all together. This way, in the morning and evening, we reach in and fill their greens "bucket" with a little bit of everything.

I've tried several types of bags ( In this picture, I was using the heavy duty garbage bags - but discarded them in favor of the Giant Clear Ziploc ones) I have found with those, I can let them air dry between uses and wipe them down fairly easily, plus because they are the ziploc, I can seal them in the fridge.

I mix it all up, because I just find it to be easier - I know I have bought a big variety, so they are getting a little bit of everything they need.

 

When we just had Coco, I used a Big Plastic Ziploc Square Container....but with Jackson, we have had to go for Volume!

I chop, wash, rinse and then put them in the salad spinner- let them sit out on paper toewl lined sheet pans to dry further and then store them in Green Bags.  I do separate the veggies-since some will stay fresh longer.  If something starts to spoil it could affect the other veggies.

Baleful... I love the pic of the gigantic pile of greens! I am still in awe over how much these small bunnies can eat. At the grocery store, half our cart is piled with veggies... and that's just a weeks' worth.

I know Beka - I often feel silly for standing at the greens section, filling bag after bag of Mint, then Cilantro, then Parsley... Honestly, I think my saving shred of sanity is that I buy all of these at an Iranian market, and they are accustomed to seeing people truck out huge amounts of veggies.

I have had cashiers ask (jokingly) "Are you feeding a rabbit" when I roll up with a massive cart of greens. They always look a little shocked when I say "yes - Two rabbits"

Today is a shopping day, in fact. The store had a great sale on Romaine - .89 cents a head, with similar prices on Dill and Parsley, so I want to stock up again before the weekend changes the specials !

Katnip - I never add red leaf lettuce to my mix, it spoils too fast, and I don't wash it until we are ready to serve it - that helps with any excess moisture. As long as there isn't any funky bits ( Like those occasional slimey spots on dandelions) I find it keeps pretty well for 4 ( at the most 5) days. I stand at the counter, 2ce a week, faithfully ripping up lettuces and herbs to refill the bags.

I also throw the roots and bottom bits into a pan of water, let them soak and then serve them to the Kids - They Love Cilantro roots, and the bottoms of dandelions and the cores of romaines. I think of them as extra crunchy treats and I don't waste anything. Plus it gives them something to gnaw on for a few hours!

All I do is open up the fridge and Arduina jumps in! hahah...

She knows thats where the good stuff is. No, seriously I should take some of your suggestions and come up with an easier solution to the many baggies problem. I don't like having to bag separate veggies at the store either..

I just line the crisper with fresh paper towel and pull all the veggies out of bags. Then I use a bowl and fill it up and take it to the rabbit room to feed. Mind you I go thru a ton of veggies and they have almost no chance of spoiling-though it works for my veggies that they don't get
