Some of you may remember when I first came here so long ago with a rabbit that ‘might’ be pregnant that I had found by my local library (she was, for those that don’t know, but the two babies were stillborn). Now, there are a lot of rabbits there. Probably 30-50. They are considered wild. There is even a sign that says “don’t take the bunnies” (I know, I don’t follow rules). Now, my boyfriend has a friend that volunteers for the library, and says that having the rabbits there is a part of the ‘restoration’ process for the creek next to said library. Now that I know what I know about rabbits, that is the biggest BS I have ever heard!!!!! These rabbits, or any type of rabbits that have unusual colors are not even native to this continent! They are european rabbits! So in fact, these rabbits have completely pushed out any native rabbits, and they are still ‘protected’. Thus, this gives people a ‘warm and fluffy’ feeling in their hearts when they dump them. I’m not ready to yet, I don’t feel educated enough, but some day I will fix this problem. For now it just really makes me angry.

That’s terrible. The worst thing is they will continue breeding and multiplying. Is someone at least providing food and care for them?

Eh, the people in the apartments provide some things, though there really is quite a bit of food there. There is even a rabbit there with a horribly broken leg (it is literally flipped upside down and healed that way) and it has been there for well over a year now. So even though I know there are raccoons (and between them, small birds of prey, and stray dogs/cats those are the only real predators), the population is stable and obviously able to avoid predators (though not small rabbits like my Nova). So they really have essentially become wild through breeding and uh, dare I say natural selection. The thing I don’t like to see is new rabbits put into the wild. The people who do it should be punished. I would love to raise money to install cameras or some sort of security so that these people are caught and punished.

That’s horrible. At least feral cat colonies often have spay/neuter days – people like to pretend that a colony of feral rabbits is just a natural wild warren. Awful.
