My mother was at the local walmart last night and a guy was giving away free baby bunnies. So she got the last two and brought them home to me as she knows I can’t say no to a bunny.Only problem is I don’t know their age or breed. I know they not very old at all and  They have the same fur color as a cottontail but there not cottontails. I’m going to post pictures so maybe you guys can help me figure out what breed they are.

Far left &  middle  is thumper,  right  is lola. they look exaclty alike except lola has a white stripe on her head.

I want to know what breed they are.

They are probably mixes. Most rabbits are mixes. Though someone else might know better. Their coloring is throwing me off. Whenever I see agouti I think “wild”, even though yours are certainly not. They certainly are cuties though!

Do you know their genders for sure? If not, I don’t remember the age that rabbits can breed, but it is quite young. You should probably separate them just to be safe until you are 100% sure they are the same gender.

Gorgeous! I’m a sucker for the agouti bunnies! People who come to visit describe my Hershey as the ‘one that looks like a real rabbit’….lol

Oh how cute.   You stumped me I have no idea what breed.  By the size of the ears tho they dont’ look like they will be under 4 lbs.

                Such pretty little things.

It’s hard to know when so young and appearances are deceiving anyway. But if their ears fall down you’ll at least know they’re part lop. I do see something slightly loppish about them…

Adorable (I know that’s not helpful…). I’m glad they found their way into your home.

The one on the left looks so much like the wild bunnies that I get in my yard! I agree they are probably mixes. Definitely adorable either way! Should be interesting to see how large they get.

You should separate them within the next couple weeks since you do not know their sex or age, for sure. Somehow I doubt “man giving away bunnies outside Wal-mart” qualifies as an expert opinion. They look very young right now, but looks can be deceiving. They’ll need to be seen by a vet soon to get sex confirmation.

Whenever my mom called me and was like i just got you some bunnies from walmart. I was like do what? lol The one without the stripe resembles a cottontail rabbit very much well really both do. there ears have not flopped down any so i’m thinking there is no part lop. I wonder if wild rabbits can breed with domestice rabbits,

Thumper ( one without stripe) looks like a girlwhen I checked him. Lola(one with the stripe) looks like a boy. So there names probally need to be switched around. lol I’m not 100% sure cause they are apparently very young still.

As far as I’ve read, cottontails cannot breed with domestic rabbits since they are different species (domestic rabbits come from European wild rabbits, which are different from cottontails). I’m sure they’re just a domestic mix – lots of bunnies come in that wild agouti color. It’s really hard to tell what breed they are when they’re so young. As they grow up and reach full size we should be able to make an educated guess.

You definitely need to be 100% of the sexes…I would have your vet sex them just to be safe. Especially if they are different sexes – you don’t want to eventually end up at Walmart trying to give up a litter either – I have to say I HATE that about Walmart, just another thing they allow that is irritating, allowing people to give away animals in their parking lot.

Domestic and wild rabbits cannot breed.

Take caution when handling them, many buns can get nippy around the time when their hormones kick in and this will happen soon. I’d say in about a month’s time, judging from the photos. It may be sooner, it’s hard to say without knowing their exact age. They may bite out of the blue just because of the rush of new hormones.

edit: I only mention this so you won’t have a repeat of what happened with your other bunny.

They are most likely mixes otherwise usually the purebreds are at least attempted to be sold to pet stores or even among the 4H community for their herds and showing.

If the man giving them away did not know anything about them- they they be of both mixed parents- and someone thought they were getting their kids 2 cute same sex bunnies to play with.

The agouti coloring is common- any idea of their age?  what do they weigh?  They look like they have large, wide ears- so that rules out many dwarfs I think.

I would call your vet and see if they have a technician that will sex them for no charge- so you know what you are dealing with immediately. Plus they should have a stool sample checked- and can set up a wellness appt and get estimates for spayed/neuters- whatever the case may be.

I don`t see a problem with not knowing.

They are definitely babies-and breed doesn`t matter since well-you aren`t showin or breeding
You should take them to a vet soon to have them checked out-then you can get an idea on their age and when to spay neuter. TBH they look 4-5 weeks old to me.

The guy told my mother that he knew nothing about them. They where his daughters and she left for college so he jsut wanted to get rid of them. Id say there prob about 2 lbs. if that.

It’s just temporary. They can be reintroduced once they are altered. Depending on what sexes they are, if they are boys they should be able to be neutered within the next month or two… possibly living together again in 3 months.
