She actually said that people who spay/neuter wore torturing them? How rude..they must not know what they’re doing.

It’s just an older way of thinking/doing things. It is why a lot of people won’t get their dogs neutered, particularly men, because they think it is sooo horrible that balls get chopped off. As much as we think of rabbits as pets, a majority of people think of rabbits as livestock.

Oh ouch-hard to keep your mouth shut in situations like that It just doesn’t matter what you say in a situation like that-they are set in their ways.

Oye! That shriek “poor little bunnies” would be irritating. You just want to retort that ridiculousness. But really as far as really getting into it with them I agree with KK. What’s the point, when someone is on a whole completely different mindset, and unless they are willing to really listen to what you had to say (you tried) then they will not accept your explanation. All you can do is just say what you think and they will believe what they want, and that’s that. The lady wasn’t too traumatized as she obviously was willing to give you a bunny even though you were Pro Bunny Torture in her eyes. So she obviously wasn’t really all that upset – just being dramatic to try and make a point I guess. Still frustrating though because even though you don’t need to have their approval – it’s just too bad about all of the bunnies they breed as these people obviously won’t be encouraging speutering for any of the offspring, and are obviously ready to wean them off too early.

Sheesh I know how that feels like. My mom tends to go in that direction. Working on it. That sounds frustrating. . . ugh. People sometimes.

It’s especially delicate for you since they are obviously treating your ostriches well and have called you to help as they said they would at the first sign of any problem. It was so nice that they worked with you to get your girls more comfortable. I agree that you just are coming from a very different point of view. They have farm bunnies, and BB is right that she didn’t hold it against you, which is good for the ostriches. Do they just give away the babies, or sell them? I wouldn’t enter into any further discussion with her on the subject. But she may be curious in retrospect about what you said, so don’t be surprised if she asks you a few questions in the future. Just keep it neutral and give her information without passion. (Like the fact they use anesthesia and pain meds afterwards, so it does not hurt, prevents cancer, live longer, etc.) She may realize that if they have too many bunnies, it could help. Just don’t bring it up first.

So glad your girls are doing well there.

That is frustrating. You could have responded, “Ohhh… your rabbits are going to die by the age of 3?! Poor little bunnies!”

But I guess that wouldn’t have been very polite. I agree, sometimes you just have to shut your mouth and move on.

Edited:  It seems they’re fortunate they’ve got a group of sociable rabbits there for the petting zoo.  (I would have thought these ones were at least fixed so you don’t have them trying to hump the kids legs etc. Not exactly great for business you’d think.)  I guess this behaviour is not true of all rabbits all of the time.   I just wonder if the people, after seeing these ones, take a kit home thinking it will all be the same.

I think I’d get all cranky with her, tell her how its bad for humans to have surgery for anything then, I mean, its torture, right? Let that lady down the street suffer with her cancer, and that man from the mall can just kiss his new hip good bye!

I mean, seriously… people are just grrrr sometimes. *pokes people with extra sharp sticks*

I’d maybe start with giving her the URL for the House Rabbit Society if she is interested… someplace that is maybe a little more subjective than BB… The other hard thing about these types of situations is wanting to swoop in and “rescue” these poor buns, but I’m guessing having 8 of your own is enough to discourage you! I’m especially concerned that come Easter, they have a mad rush for baby bunnies… and do they even offer any info/education, or they just hand out bunnies to anyone who asks?

Oh sheesh no.   Poor babies.  You know I wonder if that person thinks it ok  to neuter spay a dog or cat.  If so whats the difference with buns.

Yea my  hubby is stuck with that mindset.   Stating I am making a bunny a unich   uniq  however you spell that.   I just sneak off to do the spneuter thing.   He doesn’t have to know.

oh man. frustrating. had she reacted with the least bit of decorum you could easily have presented her with a few great reasons for speutering. but faced with shrieking. yikers. i find the “leave-things-natural” viewpoint irksome. mainly because in my experience people who hold that view also seem to be completely stubborn and refuse to even consider any other reasoning. like they’re afraid to hear it because god forbid they would change their mind.

good thing they are attentive to your ostriches!

Oh man that’s frustrating. At least they’re taking good care of your ostriches! If I were you I would casually mention getting the bunnies fixed and maybe point them towards HRS’s website, just tell them they’re offering the info cus you have rabbits. But it sounds like they’re the type that are pretty set in their ways, so I would try not to get too upset if they ignore your suggestions, and since it’s tricky since they’re caring for the ostriches, you’d need to be careful not to tick them off or offend anyone.

Yikes. They are multiplying fast. And there’s no telling how many they’ve already had and given away… They may also end up being used for *other* purposes… 🙁
