I know Furface directed me to look for Orijen pet food for my cats (and dog), but the closest distributor is Anchorage, so shipping for that will take a while. As my older cat had a bad bout of stomach trouble last night, I went to research what might be the problem and now it’s looking more like IBD (not the same as IBS) or possibly even feline leukemia. (Needless to say we’ll be taking her for a checkup soon, since I’d hate that to spread to the other two-but my guess is she may have already done so if the feral kitty hasn’t been the infective agent herself.)

Anyway, I searched through PETCO today because I had to come home with something different, going to get them off Science Diet for now. The one that looked the most promising was Organix by Castor and Pollux. I am sure somebody here mentioned this company awhile ago on the boards, but I can’t recall if it was a good or a bad reference.

Any opinions, suggestions, cautions and of course healing vibes will be most welcome. Thank you.

My great fear is, since Tooey has been ill on and off for awhile, that we are looking at possible liver damage at the worst, and an incurable bowel condition at the least. Plus she’s 10 years old…a bit of a red flag in her corner I’m afraid. Poor thing.

          MM,
I just did a keyword search for Organix, then Castor, then Pollux and didn’t find the post. Castor turned up some options but the ones I checked didn’t reference it.
Maybe it was the HRS, or just in the food sections here but not the boards?

Hm. I could’ve sworn it was someone here who mentioned it. lol…the search works for you, lucky! ^_^ I have a time with it myself.
Thanks for the vibes. I’m afraid she is a sick little old lady cat. But I tried the food on her and we’ll know in about an hour or so if it settles and stays down. She seemed to like it, but…hey, it’s food…it would be strange if she didn’t just gobble it up, whatever it was. ^_^
The hard part is, she’s my son’s favorite. He’s home for about a month from college, and it’s Christmas. God forbid we have health probs with her now, I don’t think he’s gotten over Taiku properly yet. (I know I haven’t.)

If kitty is doing well on Science Diet you should leave her on the food her tummy is able to handle. I know SD isn’t considered a “good” food but when you have an extenuating circumstance like IBD changing the food can do more harm than good, not to mention put her through unnecessary discomfort. :0(

Actually TARM, she’s not doing well on SD at all. She’s lost weight and almost ALWAYS tosses it right back up after eating it. Then she’ll go gorge herself to feel full and will bring some of that back up. Now granted she is a tubby kitty, but I can see her hips now, where I couldn’t before. This has been over about the last three months.
Also, she has a grey colored stool that seems a bit watery/a bit solid. And she’s finding all sorts of places to do her business in the house, NOT a good thing. I have to follow her around with a baggie, practically. Having just had to worry about my own stomach…I know this could be an indicator of liver disease, but at the least she fits the description for the IBD.
We’re going to more fresh foods for her also, gently introduced, to see if that would be better than her tinned food, which she can’t keep down either. It’s not constant enough for me to rush her in, but probably this next week we’re going to schedule her for a check-up. I want to nip this in the bud if I can.

I just recommended to another member that they see a vet before Wed. if they have the option, just because if something happens, and it’s xmas eve or day, followed by the weekend, it could be too long to wait to see the vet. I’d hate to have you driving in your stuff with an emergency to a hospital with her. If you think she needs to be seen, or needs the better food to get her through the week, maybe if it’s not too bad out you could go today or tomorrow.

                  It sounds like you are getting ready to let her be the older lady she is and if she can live peacefully with you until the worst happens, then she’s home with the family who loves her. I would hate to have that happen on the holiday for you and your son though. You’ve been through so much with your beasties this year. Like Sarita. Do what’s simplest for you, her and the family. My 2 cents, as usual, right? {{{{{{{{peace}}}}}}}}

I’m sorry Mimz. I can’t imagine what it’s like to have all of these back to back pet problems. I hope everyone makes it through the holiday OK and is able to respond to treatment. Fingers crossed that you’re able to get a vet appointment before Friday.

I’m sorry they still aren’t feeling well

I’d highly recommend the orijen when you can do that one. I’ve been researching pet food for 7 months solid-and I can definitely say that’s the one I like the best

                      The organix is here :
                      http://www.castorpolluxpet.com/store/organix/organix_feline_adult_and_kitten_formula

It looks OK-I’m cautious about ‘organic’ as it’s not FDA regulated yet for pet food(http://www.fda.gov/animalveterinary/resourcesforyou/ucm047113.htm) . And I think it’s sneaky-they are saying organic this and organic that but then also using ‘meal’ which is a byproduct and can be a 4D source.

BUT I think it’s not bad-not the best-but not bad all

I know when a dog is having tummy trouble it’s good to do just chicken and rice. For cats who need more protein-perhaps mostly chicken and a bit of rice-would that be doable to see if she can keep that down?

Yanno, TARM, I hadn’t thought about baby food. :-/ I should probably give it a try, thanks!
She’s doing much better today (I know, I hate when people say that after it seems like a bad scare has happened with a pet and you all are very sweet to urge me to get her seen before Xmas, thank you!) but she’s been sleeping most of the day (yesterday and today), so it’s hard to tell how an animal is doing when they’re unconscious. But if I’m reading her body language right, she’s more comfortable and I looked in the litter box today, there’s no sign of the loose stools she had two days ago. She isn’t digging at the carpet or wandering around looking anxious. I think we’ll be good for now, but one way or the other, I have very good ER vet help if I need it, even on holidays.
I would feed her straight ‘people food’ but she really won’t touch it. Surprising, as I’ve always had pets whom I have to swat off the table growing up. (Actually, my dog is still that way.) I’ve tried beef, chicken, fish…she won’t have any of it. But I have to say, since she was a kitten (and even now) she loves a finger full of ear wax. (I know…eeeewwww!) Does that sound like any kind of deficiency…(besides brain cells or taste buds) on the part of the cat? 0_o
I was more distressed realizing she’s had some rear leg ataxia for a few months now. She IS heavy, but usually was still able to jump up on things, like my bed. Now she pulls herself up by her forelegs and you can tell it’s a strain, so I lift her up when I see her trying. I think a lot of it has to do with her mental state, as she definitely missed my son when he left for college, and now that he’s home for awhile, she seems happier. But yes, she’s an old girl. I have to expect that sooner or later, we’ll be talking about the bridge for her as well. I don’t think this, or the next few years, though.

I, too, realize that even when a company claims their food is ‘organic’, there are no rules saying that the label has to reflect the contents for pet food, so yes, I look forward to finding some of the Orijen formula. Right now though, the Organix seems to be agreeing with all three cats. Which is good because I didn’t want to go back to Purina and Fancy Feast.
IBD cannot be cured, only treated and managed. I mostly worry about her having liver problems, as that can turn dicey quickly. With most of our pets in the last 15 years passing from either stomach problems or cancer or a combo of both, I have to wonder some days if there isn’t something in this house that’s making us all sick. So talk is becoming serious that a move should be in our future.
Anyway, that’s long term. Right now, I’m off to make an egg for her and see if I can tempt her with it. (We have local eggs from a lady who lives within block of us, so I KNOW those are healthy.)

Thank you all so much for the healing vibes! I will let Tooey know you are thinking of her.

Well, we didn’t enjoy the egg. Boo.
But I opened a can of salmon (for humans) for her this morning and she chomped it right down. Didn’t give her much, just enough to wet her whistle. And it had to be good stuff, because even my picky Griffy cat came over and was trying to nose her out of the bowl!
I want to be sure it doesn’t sit all day and collect germs either, so only small bites throughout the day.
She still seems tired to me though. Maybe I’m just noticing it now. She can move when she wants to…usually while I’m trying to clean the bunnies, she wants to get on the bed and in my way, so those feet go pretty fast to get there before I do. >.< She used to be such a spazz, but I can see she's definitely mellowing.

We actually put a new door in the house to partition it off into two sections, and this way Kitty gets exercise (instead of being cooped up in our boiler room) and I don’t have WW4 on my hands. Tooey will just sit at the base of it and try to stare the other cat down through the gap. Weird cat.
