OI It’s really snapped cold here. Not that I’m not used to our winters-but we had a lovely fall and good temps and minimal snow up to a few weeks ago. Last friday we had over a foot of snow, which Mikey loved and it was semi warm (for here anyways) about two below celcius.

And now we’ve had a cold snap-highs of 30-C without wind, colder then 40- (C or F) with wind-and that’s our high temps. It’s FFFFFreezing!! And Fine I can stay inside but my poor doggie-we got him a jacket

and his booties (custom made) are on order and should be here soon-but he’s too cold to stay outside for more then about three minutes and he’s used to 2+ hours of running at the dog park…he’s SO bored. We’ve been doing more trick training with him to keep him from getting too bored and we taught him to use my parent’s treadmill (only two sessions for him to get it!) but that still involved packing him up and going over there, and juggling dogs (my parent’s dog does not get along with others-so we have to juggle them to get him in the basement).

So that’s my weather complaint! Go ahead-whine a little about the weather where you are! Better yet-some pictures!! (And for those of you having nice weather-go ahead and brag -at your own risk )

Uhh, so it’s kind of cold here, around 25F, but I’m not going to complain because it’s nowhere near as cold as where you are! I’m pretty good with anything from 20-30F, but below 20F and I start to get a bit chilly.

It snowed here last week Saturday, then Wednesday, so we have a bit on the ground, but now it’s freezing rain 😛 Blech. I’d rather it just keep snowing! It’s worse going out in cold rain than in snow.

Btw, Mikey is so frickin cute running around in the deep snow!

Looks like you have as much snow as we have rain. The monsoon season hit us really hard, really quick and we have a cyclone (hurricane) building up off the coast here, which is dumping a LOT of rain on us plus strong winds. Power lines went down, trees across roads, car accidents everywere. It’s 8am here, sun is up at 6am and it looks like midnight cause the rain is so heavy.
The only reason I’m complaining is because my job involves co-ordinating disaster response for the defence…so you can imagine how much sleep I got over the weekend!

brrrrr!  we’ve had a cold snap here too… not nearly as cold as yours though!  its been -10 to -15C… about -30 or so with wind chill.  and last week we got our taste of the seasons first snow which was seasonably late.  so no complaints here.  accept for my complaint of having snow fly into my face while i’m trying to shovel my driveway.  grr.  the snow has drifted off of my roof so that it hangs down 2 feet from the soffit!  unfortunately this is the side of my house that my uncovered driveway is on.  my car is always burried under a snow drift.

*gurgle* Snow….bleah! I hate the snow. It’s funny, growing up in California, all you can think about from the end of October all the way through to March is, “Is it gonna get cold enough to snow??” Now my question is, “Is it gonna get warm enough to thaw my achin’ arse out?”
From the day my kids and I arrived in Alaska, all they could think about was going out and making snowmen, burying each other in it, losing socks, boots, mittens and hats in it, smacking their dad with snowballs. Until they got to be the ‘dignified’ teenagers that they are (or were in my son’s case) and it wasn’t considered ‘cool’ to play in the snow. (Although smacking dad with a snowball might still hold some appeal.) The griping about all the gear they have to wear was ALWAYS a factor, and made me wonder why I thought it was such a good idea to move here?
We’ve actually been pretty temperate this year, but cold is cold to me. *chattering teeth* We have some serious subzero forecast for this week though, and only minimal snow. This you would think is good, but for those of us who are living on septic tanks and have exposed piping here and there….well we need that 15 feet the 48 stole from us last week! 0_o

*throws a snowball at mrmac* Take that! lolz….

I just feel so bad for the pets left outside in this arctic temperature here. People love to tell that animals can just deal with the cold but it isn’t true.

It is too cold for my outside thermometer display to work, and my taps have to be kept dripping. I am looking forward to when it warms up to minus 20 Celsius (minus 4 Fahrenheit). That will be a relief.

For a few days the lake looked pretty, when the ice began to form:

–you want a sheet of ice, too, mac?

                                I can relate…

We were having an unseasonably warm Fall…felt weird going Christmas shopping at 15c outside. Then last week we got our first snow and it’s been freezing every since. It’s like Jack Frost suddenly realized he was late for work. Although I’m glad it will be a white Christmas.

We had the super cold weather all last week. It was in the single digits and teens Fahrenheit for the whole week. (about -15 C. to -8 C) and then there was the wind chill!!
J recently started to run with me. So, yes we were out running in that – one run the wind chill was -16F (-26C). It was brutil!

But this week we have lows in the 20’s and highs in the 40’s Fahrenheit (-6 to 5C). Much more like it!!!!!

But I also like some things about the dark & cold season…like hot tea and xmas cookies. Or soups. But it doesn’t need to be this cold to enjoy those things….

–November was warm up here, too, it was amazing.

                                    Neigey in November:

Neigey looks like he belongs with the snow but he was actually headed for the door to inside. He is afraid of being outside on the patio and didn’t last longer than a few laps even on that mild day. He’s just a tender young rex bun.

Deirdra and Mops are the ones out of mine that really love snow. They are also into digging big time… I see a relation between snow and digging! But it has to be a warm winter day for anybunny to be able to enjoy snow.

I have winter clothes for my dogs but it is a big job putting it all on, boots, leg warmers, suit. I just send them out for short periods of time and keep them out of the deep snow. My dogs are not at all built for the north. They’ve got to be indoors. I do like the fact that I don’t need to wash muddy feet when they come inside though…

And my female dog prefers to spend winter like this…

Petzy, do your dogs get snow balls built up in their fur? We had schanuzers when I was growing up and, especially if it was kind of wet snow, they would get huge balls built up on their legs and tummies after only a minute or two so they could barely walk 🙁 We would get a bowl (or even the bathtub), fill it with warm water, and soak their little feet to melt it. Needless to say, they weren’t big fans of the snow.

I suggested bringing in some snow for Otto to play with, but hubby said it was too much work 😛

No, no snow build-up on the dogs, only drool icicles. But Mops gets ice chunks in his beard.

BT, I’ve been too afraid to join this thread because, even though we are all complaining about the humidity and the fact that it’s too warm for this time of year, I don’t dare complain about weather in the 80s with palm trees. Thank you. I am really looking forward to a cool down too. 6 months in the humid 90s is way too much.

I am born and raised and spent most of my adult life in New England, so very used to snow. From playing as a kid to shoveling and scraping ice off my car until I moved here. I do NOT miss that.

Do fondly remember being outside our house when I was little and bundled up in snow suits, mittens and boots, and digging into a snow drift off the fence in our yard that had the ground drop a few feet down to a lower level. I made a big hole like a burrow or fort, and sat inside it. It actually was really cozy and got me warmed up. Must be what wild bunnies do in winter.

I think your weather calls for training all animals to flush a toilet. Why go outside at all?

After a weak warm up at the end of last week, Prairie temperatures plummeted again over the weekend reaching an all-time low in Edmonton.

At one point on Saturday night, Edmonton had the dubious distinction of being the coldest place on Earth. The record low temperature of -46 degrees was measured at the Edmonton International Airport. With the Wind Chill, it felt colder than -50. The city itself was a balmy -35 degrees before factoring the Wind Chill.

Edmonton’s frigid temperature was exceeded by a station in Siberia where the lowest temperature measured on Saturday night was -48 degrees. Edmonton’s -46 degrees was 2 degrees off the coldest temperature ever recorded for the Airport. Set back on January 26, 1972, the coldest temperature recorded is -48.3 degrees. Saturday also saw the coldest low ever recorded at the Airport in December. Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights also saw record low temperatures for Edmonton Airport

I think it’s suppose to start snowing (hopefully) by the end of the week. I hate driving in the snow but come on, it’s 10 days until X-mas and we have snow….and it’s Ohio! How is it Texas is getting snow and we’re not?! It doesn’t feel like X-mas at all here.

We bunkered down on Saturday and attempted to stay home, but had to go out to get Dave’s truck, groceries. Then Dave had to go help his mom get her garage door open-it was a bit frigid!! I almost find it hard to believe we were so cold as to be second to Siberia!! Second to anywhere really!
I know they only close schools in Edmonton if the temp hits 44- or less without windchill-so pity it wasn’t a school day on Saturday LOL They’ve not closed schools since I moved here as it was always colder then 44- WITH windchill.

WHY oh WHY do I not live nextdoor to BT or Rabbitpam??? I think I MUST be nuts!! Petzy lets pack up and move south! LOL

I just feel so bad for the pets left outside in this arctic temperature here. People love to tell that animals can just deal with the cold but it isn’t true.

That’s one of the big reasons we won’t get another dog. It’s just not fair to them. I don’t care who thinks they are built for being outdoors. I’m nto subjecting another animal to these inhumane temperatures. To think that my pack had to live through -40 and -60 farenheit. *shakes head* Makes me sick.

And I know there are folks around here who keep bunneis outdoors. I jsut want to go into their yards at night and steal the poor things!

And lol at K&K! Yeah, what’s wrong with us humans, we left the freezer door open and now when the poor pets try to go out to do their business, their butts freeze to the ground! Hello Kitty is the same way. She is VERY angry that ‘daddy’ won’t do anything about all the cold white stuff on the ground.

I was going to remark about how there was only a pair of eyes on that porch, Petzy…lol. No bunny, just the eyes.

K&K I would love it if you and Petzy and fuzzy families moved down here!!!! That would be so fun.\

I am astonished that you guys can live in that kind of cold. I was always uncomfortable in the 0-10 degree range.

My first thought is: how do your cars and planes even run? Don’t they all freeze up and get stuck? If they don’t, pile all husbands, dogs, bunnies, etc. into them and start driving south. Stop just before you hit South Beach.

And I found when living in Edmonton, most of the people I knew stocked up on cat litter during the winter months so they wouldn’t get tires stuck in the snow

I don’t know if your seriously asking but our car’s have block heaters and battery blankets in them-so you plug ’em in and they don’t freeze up. Diesels either need to be kept idiling-or a diesel generator thingy will keep them warm-otherwise kiss it goodbye until spring In fort McMurry where it’s really cold (always about ten degrees colder then here in E town) they jack up the diesel trucks and pin the gas so they are actually ‘driving’ all night because they will freeze up even at an idle.

Honestly if university wasn’t so expensive in the US-I’d be living somewhere in the south right now-maybe south beach like you said?. I’m technically american (born there-but just born there) so I could leave…but I have to finish school here And my familiy is here…I could visit :p Send me some real estate brochures lol

Petzy, your igloo looks like a rabbit hole.

There’s a Burlington Coat Factory store in my town here, and I couldn’t figure out why anyone in FL would shop for coats, but duh, it’s for travel and moving. Get yourself a waterproof warm one before you go.

Here, if you want to spend any time outdoors you have to dress ugly. I wear a nasty old sheep skin heirloom that I wanted to replace with a more beautiful coat many times but nothing is as warm.

(yeah, I’m a little slow with books)
I miss normal day and night. But when I lived in California, there were so many people I always “heard” a peculiar “buzz” that made me feel like I was hearing everyone’s conversations around me. Drove me nuts. Now we live in the boonies and it’s pretty nicely quiet, but I had to trade normal light and dark for it.

I can’t tell you guys how many folks always say, “So, you live in Alaska? How’s life in the igloo?” >_<

Oh and be careful with that grader mister maintenance man…I think I left my extension cord out in that snow berm! (You wouldn’t believe how many of those we go through!)

Our seasons are reversed to yours. So in December its Summer. HOT HOT HOT. and it will be hot until about April next year.

They are predicting 80 degrees F. for Xmas day. Nice for people with company who want to go swimming. If they can get here. The snow storms around the rest of the US are really making air travel very difficult this week.

I’m not sure if it’s just from eating winter greens or what, but I’m going to have to purchase carbon credits for the three of them if this keeps up!

I can’t imagine a 110 degree green Christmas though. Yikes on toast! 0_o Don’t get me wrong, if all the snow melted today and the sun came up to it’s normal position in the sky and the birds were tweeting and the grass growing, I wouldn’t cry…but 75 above is plenty hot for me, thanks!

So you dont get sun! thats so awesome! how does it all work when there is no sun? I know that sounds really really silly, but does that mean that kids have to go to school in the dark, etc? Is it dangerous? Wow, I have seen that in documentaries, but still dont know much about it! how long do you have no sun for? How bright is the sun in the 11 seconds that you get sunlight? Do your nocturnal animals get really confused?!

We do get sun, we have about 3 3/4 hours of visible daylight right now. We added 11 seconds from yesterday, since we passed the winter solstice (shortest day of the year). Now the sun will slowly start coming back. I think the sun went down in Barrow (think Prudhoe Bay) in November and they won’t see it peek over the horizon until February. Now that’s brutal.

I’d say we have a twilight kind of light from about 10 AM until noon, where it looks like lower 48 sunlight would look at about 6 in the morning…this lasts for a few hours and then it’s all dark again. Conversely, we don’t see stars in the summer, the light is out all day from about 2 in the morning until 12 the next AM (this is at summer solstice-June 21-and for a few months on either side of it) and then you can see the position of the sun going around the pole and coming up again by the angle of light coming over the northern horizon.
For the rest of the year (between March and May, and again in August through October) the light is pretty much how it is for anyone else. Much easier to keep your circadian rhythms going correctly. The bunnies seem to have the most trouble with it, and I have to supply them with incandescent light at regular intervals to help their systems adjust, plus I have to black out my window for them in summer, otherwise they start acting weird.

The worst part is not just the darkness in winter, but the blast of cold we get as the earth rounds the sun (perigee…or apogee, I’m not sure which) in January and February. This is where we often see weeks of -60 Fahrenheit if it’s a bad year. We are currently warmer in winter and wetter in summer than we’ve ever been, global warming I guess-although I’m not a subscriber to that POV, and my hubby swears the daylight was nonexistent during the last two weeks of the year when he was growing up here. So things have changed.

We always took our kids to and from school when they were little. But nothing outdoors is as dark as the cave of a house we live in, (very few windows-to keep heat in, but…STUFFY! 0_o ), so it’s really not an issue anymore. I think the hardest adjustment was the extra daylight in summer…totally threw off their sleep schedules and they never got those back.

Personally, I get pretty depressed during the last few months of the year, and when we hit solstice I try to just keep telling myself summer’s on the way. I spend all winter bummed out and moping through the house, not wanting to even do chores, and then when the good weather arrives, I’m so happy to be outside that nothing gets done then, either…. I think that’s what bothers me the most.

At the moment here the sun isnt going down until about 8pm, which is late enough for me! And the coldest weather we get here is only about 10 degrees celcius, which is not too cold at all… but thats 6 months away yet!!! thats incredible that you get daylight for 22 hours a day! Wow! how how does it get there in Summer?

It’s annoying, because I really need darkness to sleep well. Have you ever fallen asleep in the middle of the day, like if you haven’t been feeling well? You wake up all groggy and stuffy feeling…that’s how I get in summer.
As long as there aren’t terrible forest fires going on, or it isn’t raining and thundering and lightning flashing all over the place, I enjoy summer. But we DO get BUGS…in fact the mosquito is the unofficial state bird here.

Once they had some Japanese guys staying with them on an exchange program, and a HUGE dragonfly flew past and the Japanese man asked dad “What is that?” And dad said “Thats an Australian Mosquito!” and apparently they freaked out and wouldnt go outside at night because they were so scared of the “Mosquitoes!”

I find it so different here in Edmonton I couldn’t imagine there! Here-well we get daylight during the winter months sort of-but right now (shortest day) it’s dark when I leave and dark when I get home from work. BUT I love love love summer. Especially June-it’s almost 24 hours of daylight-not really of course-but 24 hours without any real darkness! It can be 11pm and still quite light with no pitch black occuring-I definitely like June here

The winter I could do without though Tons of snow again today-roads are insane. BUT i am off work for over two weeks starting today SWEET!

And I have another question…Ok-here it’s winter and December-but In Australia-it’s December-is it winter or summer-like do Australians reverse the names of the seasons to fit?

That sounds so funny. Sure – we just swap the names around to suit. We have four seasons. Warm=Spring/Summer which is Sept thru to Feb. And cool season Cool= Autumn/Winter i.e. March thru to August. In SA we don’t get much sub-zero temps. It’s like a mediterranean climate. In northern Aust (Queensland, Northern Territory, Top end Western Aust) they have more tropical climate so their spring/summer Dec/Jan/Feb is also their wet season.
In SA where Kafrn and myself are, our average winter temps are about 15C {59F} (lows are about 7C {44F}) So no it doesn’t get cold in your definition of cold!!!!!!!

On Christmas Day it is forcast to be a really mild Summer day (25C {77F} ) So it should be perfect.  Alot of people still do winter style meal from our UK heritage but seafood barbecue is pretty popular.

Mimz, that sounds so fascinating! Maybe not totally livable – I think it would take some adjustment, but it is fascinating all the same!  Woo-hoo 11 secs!

NEVER. >_< I'm kind of surprised it's not bigger up here though. We certainly have products all over town (especially grocery) that come in French since Canada's right next door. (Gotta love that, my family was of French descent and it's kind of heart-warming to see the language somewhere besides a textbook.)

MM, when I lived in MA one year my Dad tracked the sunset time listed in the paper for about 2 months, just before, during and after the winter solstice. We watched those extra seconds and minutes like greedy birds. What was interesting was that it plateaued for about two weeks right around the shortest day, then got either shorter or longer at a greater rate the farther away from that date.

As for the Berkshires, MA, where I lived before FL, they had three seasons. Fall, Winter and Mud.

Ice, sleet, and deluge? *shudders* But watch in six months we’ll ALL be complaining about how hot it is and how one can’t go outdoors while speaking unless one wants some fresh protein to fly in. xP

It used to be we just claimed two seasons here, Mosquitoes and No Mosquitoes. But for some odd reason we just found a large house fly in here. Where he came from I have NO idea?? (the only buggies that arrive in my bunny hay are those little cigarette beetles from time to time) I am finding more bugs seem to live into the winter months and then annoy the heck out of me in the house. >_<
