So I may be moving into a small “apartment” if my boyfriend gets a job at a bed and breakfast he interviewed for. I’m going to need a really good air freshener, but nothing too overboard..I tend to get pretty sick with strong scents. Anyone know of any good “pet” air fresheners or anything really that would work good?

And here’s a cute picture of baby Nixie relaxing with her friend. She’s so adorable, but quite the troublemaker already

I find opening the windows regularly does far more for smell control than air fresheners! I’ve tried the Febreeze Air Freshener and it’s ok I guess … but it seems to wear off after only 30 minutes, so what’s the point?

I’ve found that using Pledge on my furniture makes the whole house smell really nice. I’ll use the orange scented wood polish and my house smells nice for at least a day later.

i know it seems wierd but i clean with vinegar or vinegar/water and it really cuts down on unwanted odors. vinegar absorbs odors. yesterday i was trying to boil sweet potatoes on the stove and burnt them to a black char which stunk up my whole house. yay me. so i scraped out the non-black chunks and half-filled the pot with vinegar and water @ 50/50 and brought it to a boil. i let this simmer for almost an hour while i walked the dog and when i returned barely a trace of the smell was left.

i also have a spray bottle with water and some lavendar essential oil that i spray onto mats, or fabric surfaces when i want to add a pretty smell. i have a few different essential oils but lavendar is my fav!

I love lavender. I have some dried lavender in a vase, smelled nice in maybe a 5 foot area around it. It’s finally starting to lose its fragrance though.
Maybe you could grow some lavender or other fragrant herbs in a pot around your home.

I like the “clean linen” scented stuff. I love the smell of clean laundry. And also sometimes I like apple cinnamon scented air fresheners – especially around the holidays.

I have these renuzit adjustables – they’re not too strong, but work pretty well. Renuzit has a “super odor eliminator” and it has a sight scent, not sure how to describe it. It works well – my parents always have one near the dog’s cage, but I can’t stand the fragrance of that air freshener.

I also use Glade carpet and room cleaner about once a month. You sprinkle the powder on dry carpet, let it sit for a a few and then vacuum it up. It leaves a great scent behind and really kills any stinkies in the carpet. Thought it’s pretty powerful for a few hours after using it – I recommend opening a couple windows until the fragrance dies down a bit. Maybe I’m using too much? The bottle is only a few bucks, and in an average sized apartment, you can get at least a couple uses out of it. If you really have problems with stinky carpet… steam clean it. My parents have a steam cleaner, so I can borrow theirs whenever, but you can also usually rent them from grocery stores if you want to do it yourself.

And I’ve found that just opening a window really helps circulate the air and keeps the air from smelling stale. I live in an apartment too, so there are sometimes strange smells coming down the hallway, but opening my windows and using a box fan or a medium sized countertop fan to blow the air OUT the window helps too. =P It’s getting a little too cold now for open windows though :/

Babybunsmum, very good point about the vinegar! I’ve heard it’s especially great for cooking smells and just putting out a dish of it will get rid of a lot of odors in the air. I totally forgot about that until you mentioned it.

Baking soda near a cage can help a ton.

                          I don’t want to rain….

BUT air fresheners and generally anything that smells-is not good to have rabbits breathing in. The reason is when they breath something in (and this happens to YOU too, but you aren’t as sensitive) it goes into the bloodstream and needs to be filtered through kidney/liver->so it’s the same reason that cedar and pine shavings aren’t OK to use-it’s the smell that can cause overload.

The suggestions to just clean really well-and use baking soda are really good-but I’d steer clear of freshers (like febreeze, aerosols even lots of perfume or scented candles)-I don’t even allow a spray freshner in the bathroom

I absolutely love keeping the windows open, but that doesn’t happen very much living in Florida. Today was still in the 80’s. Luckily it’s been 70’s-80’s the past month so the windows have been open except for one day, and my room did not smell very good at all that day! With the vinegar though, it doesn’t make everything smell vinegar-y? I’ll have to try that. And I totally need to get some seasonal air fresheners..I love those when it’s chilly outside. All of those were great ideas…I’ll make a list and try them

Another question that I always forget to ask…
Since I do live in FL and it’s always quite warm, when it’s in the 60’s are my rabbits warm enough? I see pictures of everyone’s bunnies out in the snow but I’d be so worried mine would freeze to death! Or is that just a human thing with the blood thinning and being colder?

I never knew that about the air fresheners…what about the baking soda idea? Is that okay for them? The air freshener I’m using now I really only keep plugged in half the day and the windows have stayed open, but I don’t want to overload them when it’s not cool out anymore.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that, but KK has a good point. When I do the carpets with the powder, I do half of the apartment and keep Leroy out of that area for a day or so, then I switch and do the other half and keep him out of there for another day, day and a half. And never around his cage area. I wish I didn’t have to, but you know… it’s an older apartment, so yeah… The air fresheners that I have are supposedly 97% natural.

I wonder if I could steam my carpets w a 50/50 vinegar water solution?

What kind is the natural air freshener?

                                    Renuzit Adjustables.

I’m sure you could get an all natural air freshener like flower petals or something, but once they dry up, I’m not sure how much good they’d do. The renuzit adjustables last a few weeks and are only like a dollar at the grocery store. Keep in mind though, there’s some dispute over the label “natural” on foods and things…

I have my window open…it works better than any stinky stuff and I don’t get nauseated. I also have a fan blowing to keep air flowing. If you keep on top of liter/cage cleaning and just leave a window open – even a few inches, it works great for me. I have 3 guinea pigs and 2 rabbits in my room and I just keep on top of the cleaning. If I didn’t my parents would enrage and I would be dead. In a small space room fresheners could be death to your nose.
