Last week my foot was stepped on by the horse I am leasing.  He stepped on my last 3 toes- it hurt like the devil and dented my leather boot- which finally after my lesson popped back to normal.

I have a huge bruise- have still gone riding- can’t stay away.  I had a lesson right after this happened- so I did not bother to take my boot off and look at my foot until I got home.  My husband thinks one of my toes is broken- but that they don’t do anything for it anyway- so I have not bothered to go to the doctor.  It was doing better- the bruise, pain and swelling going down, etc until today I caught it on the dogs wire feeder while walking by it- and Ouch- it reminded me on the initial injury (though not as intense).

How long does it take for a broken toe to heal?  Has anyone else had this happen- I assume our other members with horses have had their foot stepped on?

Hmm, I’ve broken the same toe two to three times and each time I’d say it took about a month for the pain to really go away. But after a few weeks I was more or less walking as normal without a limp.

Hope your toe feels better soon! I’ve been stepped on a few times, but only once was it strong enough to do much damage. Usually horses kind of shuffle onto toes, not stomp, but I’ve met stompers too 😉 I’ve actually broken my toe by knocking it into a coffee table or couch leg a few times.

Mine was more or less okey after two weeks. I usually tape the broken toe to another toe for stability. If it is your big toe, the doctor might be able to do something for it but the others are basically SOL. I wiggle them just a little bit to make sure that the bone isn’t a compound snap that could be injuring the rest of my body but usually if you are walking on it and not wincing in pain with every step, they’ve probably reset themselves (they do that rather easily).

When I was about 7 I was throwing firewood on the truck with my dad and a piece fell off onto my foot and broke my little toe. The doctor did say there wasn’t anything he could do for me but recommended ibuprofen and ice for the swelling and pain. My mom also got me shoes with some extra room in the toes so I could be more comfortable, it only hurt for a few weeks.

I broke my toe once! It took about a month for the pain to go away, and about 6 weeks in total to be completely back to normal.

Depends on the break. My mild collarbone break was fine after a few weeks but my mom’s demolished ankle took over a year to completely heal. So if it was a small one (like it sounds like this probably is, a severe one would be so painful, you’d have to go to the hospital) it should be ok after a few weeks of babying it. Lucky it wasn’t worse. I knew a guy who almost lost a toe like that to his draft horse.
