So…I’ve been wanting a rat for a long time now but Idk anything about them other than that they’re very friendly and is it true that they stay on your shoulder sometimes? Too cute! I really want to adopt one (after Sophie’s babies are adopted of course O_O otherwise it’s gonna be a zoo in here) but I wanna know the care they need, money, housing, cleaning, do they bond with each other, are they good for the buns and my dogs, do they need free roam or are happy in their cages, how big should the cage be, how many years do they live, are they happier with another rat, all that stuff; so I can see if I can take care of one since i don’t know much about them yet

        Thank youuuuuuu

I’ve been contemplating a rat, they are very intelligent, and cute as heck. Hubby says no right nwo tho, he says 2 bunnies are the max for apartment.

So I tell him, must be house hunting time then

I have 2 rats at the current time. Freddy and Eddie, They are about 4 months old, and are the best of friends, At one time we had 21 male rats, That lived in a huge cage.

Rats can be lots of fun, They are very Smart. I had some rats that would come to there name when you said it. They love to come out for play time, but if you had a big enough cage they are happy to be in there too. Its always a good idea to have at lest two rats to keep each other company when your away. Plus when they are young they love to play fight with each other. Its always fun to watch them play

I don’t think it cost much to feed rats. We buy a small bag of rat food that cost about $10 a month, Then we feed them table scraps for treats since rats have a big verity of food they are a load to eat.

The only bad thing about rats is the only live to be 2 to 3 years, Some have lived longer but doesn’t happen very often. Rats get repository infections easy but a vet visit well give some medication that well help.

I have this site http://www.petratscanada.com/ it has a of good information about pet rats.

You can have rats spayed or neutered, that’s supposed to help prolong their lives. They breed fast and often so be careful! But yes, pairs or trios are best because rats are social animals and they bond strongly. If you have a trio instead of a pair…if something happens to one the ramaining rats will have each other to get them over their grief.

We have a female rat named Misty. She was just being sold as a feeder rat, and she turned out to be very tame. She has a pretty large cage, and it really doesn’t cost much at all to keep her. She makes the most amazing nests. It’s always fun when you clean the cage to watch her get back to work making her mountain of shredded paper nest.

I have two neutered males. They really do make great pets! They do require a lot of vet care though, especially if you’re unlucky and end up with bad genes. Female seem to cost me more than males, as they tend to have mammary problems unless they are spayed. My current two males don’t smell any worse than a female because they have been clipped. Unfortunately, I am allergic to my boys so try and hold an adult one and test if you are. They really do much better in pairs or more. I had 5, with only two left now. After they go I probably won’t get any more. If you have trouble letting go of your pets then rats probably aren’t the best choice as I have had some, even with good care, that only lived a year. But if you want a little bald tailed, loving creature to grace your life for a short while then rats really are excellent. Especially because, unlike rabbits, rats can eat ANYTHING. If you are eating it, so can they! (excepting some things like raw potatoes and soda isn’t great for them)
