Guy-please send some heeling vibes for Chuck!!! For those who don’t know him, he’s my holland lop I adopted last July, knowing he was blind (has one eye removed, the other is cataract) and turned out to be deaf as well-he gets on well though and is a happy man.

So yesterday  I know he was fine-fed him his veggies and he was good-excited as always. I went out early this am for a farm fair I was taking my friends daughter to and peeked in-he was snoozing on his pillow with Noot-he could have been aflicated then-I don’t know.

But when we came home I went into tidy and feed veggies and he was falling over, circling and his head is tilted. This is quite possibly the saddest thing I’ve ever seen. He was covered in pee as well, I don’t know if he’s getting incontinent or was near Noot when he peed…

The only thing I can think is head tilt (e. cuniculi ) or wry neck (Torticollis) I freaked and phoned the E-vet for euthanasia but phoned around to see if I could talk an E vet to come to my home and do it-a car ride when your blind and deaf is never fun-but when your not feeling well..

Honestly euthanasia was the only thing I could think. He’s had a hard life-neglect, losing an eye. Then being totally in the quiet dark with no hearing and vision.

Then I was preparing to take him and Noot in for the big needle;  and they were snuggled up (When Chuck is circling, Noot comes up to him to steady him) and I could see Chuck tooth purring.

I phoned my parents. My vet is off work  or just back, from her marriage/honeymoon etc right now I think. But my mom knows she is home because the vet phoned her friday to check in on Mandy…SOOO she talked me into phoning at her home, I’m nervous phoning vets -to me they are like celebrities and I don’t want to bother them -phonning at home-I felt terrible.

But our vet said she wants to see him, and has had success treating both torticolois and e. cuniculi, and wants to rule out ear infection or neuro causes. She told us bring him in asap tomorrow morning, and she would see him. Though tricky with his other issues, he’s a very happy confident boy with Noot around him.

So please send Chuck major healing vibes!!! Hes a happy boy and I’m not ready to say goodbye!!

Oh no! poor Chuck – me and all the bunnies will be saying our prayers for Chuck, I know that you will make the best decision. I can definitely understand not wanting him to have to live with head tilt in addition to his other difficulties, so hopefully your vet will be able to help him. I know that Chuck has had the best care he could ever have living with you, so either way you can be confident that you have given him the best life so far that he could ever have.

(((INFINITE HEALING VIBES))) I hope tomorrow they can treat Chuck and he’s gonna be okay and be able to snuggle with Noot again. You’re taking great care of him so any decision you make, know that you will be making the right one; especially after the vet has checked him tomorrow.

OH, I am so sorry! I so hope it is something simple like an ear infection that can be treated. But how heartbreaking for you to have to go through this. I know you may not get a real restful sleep tonight. I’m so sorry. Healing vibes for Chuck and Hugs and peace vibes to you.

Well he was head to butt-so bent around.. *cries* but now him and Noot are snuggling. My vet is awesome-if there’s a chance she’ll go for it And she knows him0w-when I phoned her crying tonight-she’s so sweet-she wasn’t mad at all she was worried. I think together we can make a good decision. I’ll keep you all posted. My dad has chipped into the fund for testing so no regard to cost-we’ll just see what needs to be done.

Thank you all for the vibes-it may have worked

Quick update-it MAY be just an ear infection (My vet must think it runs in the family to screech into the vet office for euthanais for an ear infection-we just had Mandy in weeks ago for euth when we though her tumor was back -it’s cerebellar so same symptoms as ear infection…She must think we’re nuts!!)

She did an exam and his teeth are great (not related but glad she checked) and he would NOT let her look in his ear on his tilted side (That says a lot she’s very good handling rabbits) so she was letting him settle down for an hour with Noot (he gets very upset when he’s handled) and then putting him under to look at the ear and do culture/cleaning whatever is needed. She’s also taking blood while he’s under and doing some xrays ( I think she just really loves xrays-she always does them LOL) so we should have real concrete diagnosis soon and a plan.

I really hope it’s an ear infection that we can treat easily!!

I love the fact that the vet is letting him settle down with noot.  Not to sound all gross but you might get lucky and it might just turn out to be that a bug got in there and decided it was a nice home.

                                                LOL Markbun

I love the fact that the vet is letting him settle down with noot

                                                She’s a wonderful wonderful vet

Vet bill update LOL. This is not including meds which she hasn’t totalled up, or tax (he’s getting three meds, antibiotic thing for the infection, metacam just in case, and she’s trying to track down an antinausea med they use in the US for bunnies-she’s seriously as we speak phoning all pharmacies and vet clinics in the city to see if anyone has it)
So just for the stuff she did (she doesn’t charge me for all day hospitalization or an exam fee) we’re 499$ and counting.

I know that’s super super for all the stuff she did-but man oh man am I going to be hitting Dave up to cover my bum financially until next pay day!!!

She’s really confident this will do the trick-I’ll update after I talk to her (She’ll show me the xrays) she does a great discharge discussion often talking for 1/2 an hour or more. Seriously the time she spends she must see 2-3 clients per day tops LOL

It’s called cloroampenicol palmate-I don’t know if it’s common but she’s used it before with success and said she’d been reading about other cases in journals that used it.

Has Chuck ever had ear issues before?

Not since I’ve had him, but he was a severely neglected, and his eyes were so infected that he had to have one removed, the other was ruined too though.

His Bulbu (sp?? I can’t even find the term with google; It’s the base of the ear near the eardrum from what I gathered) were vey opaque on the xrays (she’s putting them on disk for me! She took a ton!) and they shouldn’t be (though she said that’s incidental to this as it takes a long time to happen, but that likely from an infection in his past) perhaps why he’s deaf. It’s both but only one ear is infected.

I am happy that it is not something life threatening.

It isn’t in and of itself (so far!) but a quality of life issue-blind and deaf, he’s done fine. But throw in dizzy and can’t walk But it seems very treatable and time will tell!! He’s loafing with Noot on the hay pile eating while laying down (That’s a Rupert move!) so he still seems content

Thanks all for all the well wishes. He’s loafing with Noot right now and I’m not going to bother him to give meds for a few hours.

We are treating for an ear infection-as that’s what it looks like. She can run blood work herself, but sent it out to a blood pathologist because she wants his blood looked at and not just run in a machine. She’s ruling out a tumor and some other things with that. There definitely wasn’t a mass visible on his xrays and there were a ton, but we want to be sure.

So there may be more news, but for now-we’re treating with pain meds (for the inflammation-you could actually see it on the xray) and his antibiotics. The antinausea med should be ready wednesday but I’m going to phone them tomorrow and explain (it’s a people pharmacy compounding it) and see if I can guilt them into speeding that up.

She said it could be a week before we see an improvement, to phone her every day to update her and to phone her 24/7 (she gave me her cell and home) if he declines or is uncomfortable -Gawd I’m glad I have this vet.

Wow, I am just reading this thread now. I am so sorry that you are having to go through this. I’m glad that it seems like it will be treatable, but I know how terrible it is when they are sick, and how much it hurts to see them like that. That’s a hefty bill too. I am definitely sending healing vibes for him, and good vibes for you too.

This is Chuck. I am going to cry. I guess I am relieved but it’s a bit of a shock and I feel negligent.

OK, enough about me. Noot is my hero. He seems to be healing Chuck as much as some meds will. I hope the pharmacy will get the meds tomorrow instead of Wednesday.

I can feel the panic in your post at the thought of him being terminally ill, and even though there are other issues at work for Chuck, I can’t imagine the thought of having him euthanised. I will keep him in my prayers that he recovers fully and quickly.
