Here in Ohio we have always heard of Sweetest Day always in October. Many people call it a “Hallmark Holiday” meaning that the card companies made it up so people would buy cards.

Im asking here because im arguing w/ friends that this isnt a local thing and people elsewhere in the US have at least heard of it.

        Anyone?

I’ve heard of it but only on the e-card websites.

Well, I’ve never ever heard about it here in the US, but where I’m from originally (Argentina) there’s a week that’s called “The week of sweetness” in which you give candy, chocolates, greeting cards, etc to all your friends and family It’s really cool. I think it’s celebrated on April though.

It’s not really a local thing, but it’s certainly a regional thing. I grew up in PA and honestly never heard of it before now. It’s like groundhog day though, I found out when I moved to UT that most people this far away never even heard of Punxsetawney Phil. They don’t even know it’s a holiday, the usual response is “isn’t that just a movie?” I guess I have to accept that some things I grew up with as a significant part of the culture just don’t matter other places. (Manners seem to fit into that category here too. I think I’m the only person in all of Utah who was raised to call people Sir and Ma’am.)

I’m originally from western PA (Pittsburgh) which is very close to Ohio and I’ve never heard of this holiday! Now I’m in Connecticut and we definitely don’t celebrate it over here. I’m guessing it’s just a regional thing.

Adalaide – how can people not know about Ground-hog day – it’s on the National News every year!

I’ve never heard of Sweetest Day – but it sounds fun! Great day for a bake sale!

I used to get those little hand sized calendar books from Hallmark all the time as a teen, and Sweetest Day was always there in the October calendar.
You don’t hear that much about it anymore. Of course, I think there’s more holidays than we need on our calendars now…between those and birthdays/anniversaries/etc. who can keep track?? 0_o

I am closer to you- Michigan- and oh, yeah Sweetest Day- the “holiday” that every girl of dateable age is aware of.  At my High School I know whatever organization at the time used to sell Carnations for Sweetest Day as a fundraiser- just like Valentine’s Day!

I at my wise old age (35) now treat it like a Hallmark Holiday- but back in the day it used to mean the men/boys needed to pony up and buy a gift- and I used to buy my hubby presents too I think.

I thought everyone knew about it too but then again I also live in Ohio. I just think it’s like Valentine’s Day the sequel haha! I don’t really celebrate it.

Hmmm…..where is my gift? I am still waiting! Actually, I have never heard of it either, but I do know about Groundhog’s Day! I have always wanted to go visit Punxy Phil

Mimz-I disagree-we need all the holidays we can get!! Holidays mean time off work and often big dinners and/or presents. They are FINE by me LOL

I grew up in WV, right next to the Ohio border, and I had never heard of it until I went to college in Ohio and made friends with people from Northern Ohio.

Do you think that us “Ohioans” are just so gullible and thats why we are one of the few places that celebrates it? I know it is a hallmark holiday BUT us girls always need more gifts. lol Men need to be reminded we still need “woo-ed!”

I think in Japan they have a holiday similar to that, if it centers around guys doing nice things for the ladies in their lives (although I thought that was Valentine’s Day?)…it literally translates to “Girl’s Day” and the guys have to follow the girls around all day and help them carry things they buy for them and take them to lunch and dinner and basically become man-bots for the day.
I believe, however, there is also the reverse to the day that’s just for the guys, but I’m afraid I don’t know what it’s called…. lolz.

I am from lower west michigan and there were people who celebrated Sweetest Day in school.. but I never personally acknowledged the holiday.

Seems the popular kids really liked it. But no one else really cared.

I never liked it not only because Hallmark made it up.. but because I felt it was steeling Valentines Day’s thunder and was not necessary.

I have not heard a peep about Sweetest Day since I left high school. (Besides this thread of course.)
