Hello everyone!  It’s been a really long time since I’ve posted, though I do lurk a couple times a week.  Time is not a luxury I have a lot of these days, especially since I’ve joined the Board of Directors at Bunny Lu!  I’ve been working on some projects for our open house that’s coming up on November 8.

A couple months ago we fostered a pair of bonded brothers who were adopted as babies and returned over a year later.  They were kept in a dark basement with very little human contact.  As a result they were a little shy, but mostly indifferent to people, unless you tried to pet them.  Then they would try to hide.  They’re big boys, though, so there’s not a whole lot of hiding options in a pen.

My 11 year old was asked by Mary Ellen to socialize them to make them more adoptable.  Amber sat with those boys for hours, getting them used to her presence and rewarding them with oats…fed one at a time pinched between her index and middle fingers.  They not only learned to trust her enough to take the oats but also to take them gently.  It was amazing to me that my rugrat had that much patience for animals that aren’t even ours.

Amber comes with me to volunteer every Saturday she isn’t with her dad.  She fills hay and replaces water in over 20 cages and scrapes dirty carefresh out of 30+ boxes, and sometimes she even WASHES all the boxes with no complaint.  The work she does literally takes hours and when she’s done all she asks is if she can sit in a pen with “her boys”.

You see where this is going, right?

She asked a couple weeks ago if the boys don’t find a home if she can adopt them as her Christmas gift.  I know what the general consensus is about kids adopting rabbits and I agree but she has proven that she’s responsible enough to handle it.  Even Mary Ellen told me flat out that they are Amber’s rabbits.  She wants us to adopt them too.  And even if Amber gets boy crazy or her social life picks up as she gets older I’m pretty smitten with them too so that’s not an issue.

Except we already have four rabbits and I swore I wasn’t getting any more.  AND that my next rabbit will be a flemmie.

What’s a girl to do?  Look at them and tell me you could resist them.  They’re the most gorgeous agouti rabbits I’ve ever met.

What handsome boys! And you could always just say… YOU aren’t adopting them, SHE is

Congratulations on becoming a board member at BunnyLu! It’s a huge commitment isn’t it.

Amber sounds like the perfect volunteer too.

The boys are gorgeous – I have 2 agouti’s myself.

It’s good to see you too.

Hey TARM. I would let Amber have them. Are they ever two gorgeous buns, I love that they match! –Even an adult’s life can change affecting the time available to one’s pets. Important is to have another person ready to be there for the pets if need be (you in this case). It is usually the cleaning etc that kids don’t want to do… but cleanig 30+ boxes??? I think Amber is pretty convincing…

Yeah, the rules at Bunny Lu are that you have to be 18 to volunteer but my kids are an exception. :0) My oldest doesn’t particularly like rabbits (I know, she’s nutz) so she stays home and sleeps late while the youngest comes with me. I guess we can consider it our quality time.

Mmm..that coat colour and body shape seems awfully familiar……….
You’re a good, understanding Mom and Amber sounds very mature. She obviously made a connection with them. She “may” have less time for them when she’s a teen but personally, I believe her connecting with & helping rehabilitate these two and taking on their care at her age is an invaluable experience. Congrats on the new additions.

Edit: I noticed their adoption poster says “mini lop rex mix”  Did Mary Ellen know who the parents were or was this an estimate? I just find this interesting because Rumball is 1/2 (maybe 3/4) lop and his fur is rather dense and softer than Jerseys. Are the boys like this too?

Those boys came in with their mom and one of their littermates had completely rex fur. Insane, right? Their fur is very soft but it’s not rex fur. And they’re pretty big bunnies. Bigger than any of my midgets.

We haven’t adopted these guys yet. We’re giving them til Christmas to find a home where they will be the only bunnies and won’t have to share it with 4 others and two dogs. Plus I’m broke as a joke right now and don’t have the adoption fee to spare.

Uh…..Seems Mary Ellen, Amber and all of us think it’s a done deal!

But yeah….that fee is steep.  Here, sdoption fees are like $40.  I was surprised to see theirs.  Maybe it could be wavered for board members or at least discounted?  I guess rescues cannot really afford to do that either.

Wow yeah, those are some high fees. here in Portland its usually $35 for one bun, $45 for a bonded pair.

                          Really? Are they spay/neutered?

At the rescue here it’s $80 a bunny and they come speutered with microchips. For a pair then, it’d be $160. Pretty high but it’s a rescue so it’s hard not to justify it. Then again, everyone is broke right now!

On another note, those boys are adorable

Just checked our Humane Society, and the fee for rabbits is $39 (that includes speutering).

Also saw this note on there:
“In September alone, over 900 cats and dogs came through our doors.”

                              Ouch.
                              – Annette

I think Bunny Lu would go bankrupt if the fees were less than they are. I wish they were lower though. I remember when I first saw them I thought the group was nutz for thinking they could adopt out rabbits with fees that high…but people pay it. Heck, I paid $100 for Marshmallow. When you consider that I paid $20 for Digger at the shelter and then had to shell out $110 for his neuter…a $100 adoption fee for an already fixed rabbit looks like a deal.

Well these small rescues try to at least cover the cost of spays and neuters and they cannot even do that.
