So Mandy, my parents dog    (the one unlucky with health, she has had cancer, and now numerous little things-she pretty much has her own suite at the vet’s office-in fact I think they were able to remodel the office becasue of her )      has been diagnosed with severe arthritis in her front arm.

The vet has her on an injection regime for four weeks, of a joint lubricant. And on Synovi G cookies (though our vet thought the company is discontinuing them so we may have to look for alternatives-just such an easy way to give glucosamine!!). After the injection regimine, she is going to go for acupuncture treatments.

Do you have any tips or things you’ve done that worked well?

I was thinking about going over to pop her in a warm bath for a 1/2 hour maybe once a week (She can’t get in a tub anymore, and my ‘rents can’t pick her up) -I was thinking a nice soak in warm water may feel good to her. What do you guys think?

What about the laser therapy like I did for Maxine?

I’ve been doing the glucosamine for Maxine but cannot tell a difference.

Honestly though Maxine’s arthritis is very debilitating too and her back leg she still cannot use. The purpose of the laser is to treat the chronic pain and help with her quality of life…I think it has helped because she can know sit up (somewhat).

Also what about metacam – it was really developed to treat arthritis in dogs – I give it daily to Maxine as well – sure there are risks but the benefits outweigh the risks in my opinion – you just need to do some bloodwork before you begin the metacam long term.

I have a Manx kitty with spina bifida so she drags her hind end around. She got arthritus as a young age down there too and I can tell at times she is in terrible pain. She has a skin allergy so I have to get her an allergy shot that is a sterioid that also seems to help her with her pain. I notice after her shot that she perks up. I also keep a kitty coat on her to keep her warm. Even in the summer, she likes to hold her head over a lamp in my computer room to warm her face? She don’t seem to mind the clothes I dress her in at all because I am sure she knows it helps keep her warm and at night, she snuggles with me under the blankets. I have never heard of metacam. We have not had a dog in years. Do you give her ibuprophren?

One of my dogs that was crippled with arthritis in her spine and hips in the end couldn’t tolerate any oral meds any longer before she passed but what she liked for relief was a warmed sack of dried cherry pits on her very bad hip at night time. They sell them at some health stores or people make them. The cherry pits are believed to have an addiitional soothing effect besides keeping warm. A plain old warm water bottle will help too. –It was a funny joke at my house because the sack of cherry pits was shaped like a kitty… my dog was not a friend of cats..

BB member Kafrn has posted about diamtomaceous earth (fossil shell flour) before regarding arthritis.  I’ve read a bit about it since being in contact with her, it can be used for flea treatment, worming and a myriad of things apparently…
This is the link she previously posted: http://www.wolfcreekranch.net/diatomaceous_earth.html and also http://www.earthworkshealth.com/pets-animals-testimonials.php (linked straight to testimonial page -mention of use for arthritic dog)

Is it Adequan injections that Mandy is getting?  If so, those can be continued longer term.  Also Cosequin or the human version of Cosequin- Cosamin is a great alternative for dogs.

                        Thanks all!!!

Sarita-is there anymore info on the laser you can give me? I told my ‘rents about this and they are going to bug our vet about it. If it’s possible at all, she will figure it out and get Mandy in for it.

She’s on pain killers. She cannot take aspirin b/c of other meds-shes on something stronger then metacam but I cannot remember what my mom told me it was called-because I have no memory at all

Jers,Kafrn, Petzy-thanks for the tips-I will print that up and give to my mom to bring ot our vet to ask about!!

Desma-Metacam is an NSAID just like ibuprofin or apsrin. (NSAID_non sterioid anti inflammatory) -so very very similar. Dogs cannot have ibuprofen (Where as kids cannot have aspirin!!); Aspiriin is generally ok for dogs, but Mandy cannot have it because of interactions with another drug she is on. BUT you are totally on the right track with asking about a pain killer-and she is on one

A heated bed or mat could do her wonders. Even during the day if she sleeps in your parents’ bed at night. Is acupuncture good for joints? I can’t remember now.

I would check into Adequan- and injection used for joint health- I think it originally was used for horses.  There are little to no side affects other than injection site reaction possible- as far as I can remember.  I used it on our end stage cancer dog when she was already on a grocery list of other meds.

Also Cosequin/Cosamin is helpful and yet again little to no side affects- other than possible food allergy to an ingredient.

I am also fascinated by Sarita’s accounting of laser treatment.  I have an older cat that I am trying to get a good treatment plan for- she won’t eat the Cosequin, Adequan is not approved or tested in cats and I am scared to use Metacam on her yet.

Katnip, I think the laser treatment is worth inquiring about. I’ve been very pleased with Maxine’s response to this – yeah, she’s not where I want her to be but there was no promise that the laser treatment would make her back leg more mobile. She does appear more comfortable and alert. I think one of the positive things about this is that it is not a drug and many animal owners like the idea that there is no risk in doing this like there may be with drugs. I have not yet taken her off metacam since the technician recommended that we wait 4 weeks for another treatment and then see about reducing the metacam after speaking with my vet. I hate using metacam but I think for Maxine the benefits outweigh the risks.

The cost for the 6 treatments was $350.00 and then each additional treatment is $70.00…it seems pricey but if we can reduce the metacam it would be worth it. The holistic vet for the acupuncture was around $100.00 per session.

I just stopped using the equine cosamine and am using the Si Miao San that the holistic vet prescribed…I suppose I could use both of them and might do it since I see no harm in using them.
