I decided to post pictures of my 2 chinchillas for everyone to see! My first chinchilla is a Standard Gray, 3 yr old male, Kunya, (kept his original name) who I bought from a college student that could not move with him to her new home. He is very cool, he love to be scratched under his chin and pet. After I got him, I read that chins are very social (like rabbits!) and I decided to get Kunya a buddy. Well I went to Petco one day to get something for my dog, and I found the cutest chinchilla, sitting on the water bottle in the cage. So I got him and named him Ashe, a Beige chin. Long story short, HE turned out to be a SHE! So Kunya is now neutered, I have no idea if Ashe is going to have babies (it’s hard to tell until they are almost due) and if she is they may not even be Kunya’s because she was in the male chinchilla cage at the pet store with another boy!! If she is, we will deal with that at a later time. Boy that story sounds like something that should be on Jerry Springer, LOL!

Anyway, they are both doing great and without further ado:

Ashe chewing on an apple twig:

        Chinnie kisses:

Kunya enjoying a chin scratch….he’s smiling!

Thanks for reading my story and looking at their pictures!

They are so cute! I know nothing about chinchillas but have always been fascinated by them. Did they bond immediately or did you have to introduce them like you do rabbits?

Thank you, Sarita! I had no problem with them bonding, they took very quickly to eachother. He started grooming her immediately, which is good sign like rabbits. For chinchillas, you are supposted to bond them slowly, like bunnies. But these 2 just clicked! Even when Kunya was separated from her after his surgery, he missed her and she missed him. I would show them to eachother daily to make sure they knew the other was still there. Ashe was lonely too, it broke my heart. Finally the day came when I could put him back and they snuggled and groomed eachother for an hour. It was cute!

Yes, Lizzie, Kunya throughly enjoys his scratches. Sometimes he puts his paw in the air or on my hand, it’s sweet!

I’ve been wanting a chinchilla. But after all the baby buns and Penny & Lola I think my family & boyfriend might start to think I’m going crazy.
Maybe one day in the future.

                they are too cute.

They are absolutely adorable!!! I want one so bad! I love the gray ones and have debated with myself many times on getting a pair. I already have 3 bunnies so financially it just isn’t feasible. I love how the bounce around and when they take a dust bath – oh my! soooooooooo adorable!

Thanks everyone! Amanda, you have been through a lot, I wasn’t a memeber here when Lola had her babies, but I did see your posts and pictures since….sooo cute! You will know when you are ready for a chinchilla.

Chinchillas are soooo funny when they take their dust bath….it’s hilarious to watch Mine try to use the same house, even though each has their own. If one is in the bath house, the other one rolls around on the shelf where the house is until the other jumps out! Crazy chins. They are expensive animals and their cage is rather costly too. I have a small fortune invested in them, but I love them The good thing is they love the same willow and hay as the bunnies so when I order from a bunny site, the chins get goodies too!

What kind of cage is that? It looks almost like a Ferret Nation.

Very cute critters. I’d like to have a pair one day but I’m trying to thin my herd, not expand it. :0)

ahhh! they are sooooo precious. i’ve never had a chinchilla, but i was absolutely obsessed with them when i was younger. in junior high i did a 12 page research paper on them. i probably will never have one, but i still think they’re so cute and interesting! feel free to post pics any time.

they are so adorable.    glad you shared them with us.   So they are like rabbits pretty much.  With bonding and hay too.  Hmm I didn’t know that.

I just know they can be shy. And extremely soft too.

I have them in a Critter Nation cage, similiar to the Ferret Nation, just smaller bar spacing. A 12 page research paper!?!? Wow that is cool. I bet you learned A LOT!

jerseygirl: i know Australia has very strict regulation on reptile import, almost impossible to import anything. is the same thing for chinchila? hedgehogs seems hardly to make good pets. i got some experiences when i saw them croos the road or people’s yard. they often get hurt by cars, in some cases, they were killed. i took hedgehogs backhome and release in a safe place the other day. however, even one night drove me crazy. they were nocturnal and not friendly, at all. i was told that the body temperatue of hedgehog is lower than most mammals, so is the IQ. i don’t know if the temper would be diffrent for captive bred ones. i really wish as i love them. in china, children get to learn Mr.Hedgehog in fairy tales. they were always described as hard working and honest. they are almost dream pets, besides squirrel, bunny etc. there are also some superstitions about them, even being seen as gods.
Kafrn: chinchilla is a kind of rodents, originated from andes mountain ( maybe extincted in the wild ), domesticated by americans. in china, we called them long mao (dragon cat). that name was from a japanese cartoon, Totoro, by Hayao Miyazaki . name of the character, Totoro, was translated in to chinese ” long mao”. latter, people found chinchillas look like Totoro, so they named.

I know what you mean, I really wanted a hedgie, but they are illegal in PA, where I live. I guess there are reasons why you can’t have certain animals where you live, but it hardly seems fair to the people that would like to have a certain pet.

Thanks Lancy for all of you info! I learned a lot that I didn’t know

i always wanted a few chickens. i think they are so fun. my grandparents had one once. i wanted to get rhode island reds. their so pretty. but my “zoning” laws are one chicken per acre! my family doesn’t even own a acre. and a chicken doesn’t need a whole acre. i going to wyoming so i can have all the chickens i want!

Yes Lancy, I think Chinchillas are illegal here. Hamsters too (?) but don’t quote me on that.  I guess they’re careful about introducing species in case they get become feral like the rabbits did.  It can become a thread to the native mammals.  Totoro sounds similar name to another cartoon that airs here.  Trotro.  It’s a childrens show featuring a little grey donkey.

One day I shall have a little grey bunny named Trotro.

A member here has a pet hedgehog named Snuggles. https://www.binkybunny.com/FORUM/tabid/54/a…fault.aspx

I wouldn’t know what they’re like as pets – I just get caught up in how cute they are.  It’s funny as all the animals we can’t have here we want yet many people would LOVE to have some of our native animals.  The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.

Kafrn, there’s plenty chinchilla videos on youtube.  And soooo many other critters!

yes, ecology of Australia is unique. the animals are in very special positions of evolution tree, totally different from other continents. like a species museum, Australia should be paid more attention.
Snuggles is so cute! she is the cutest hedgie i’v ever seen.
my greener grass is red panda. we have them in the wild in sourth of china, but there is no captive bred and they are illegal as pets. i saw a video on youtube ( before it was prohibited ) , ahout a japanese girl and two red pandas. they are so spoiled! i tottally fell in love with them. i’m not sure if the video is still there as i can’t get access. you may search with “japanese girl” and “red panda” to see if you could find it.
