Craigslist Adoption Gone Sour…

I have been keeping my eye on craigslist/petfinder  for a rabbit to adopt and I had found a neutered 2 year old male. I had emailed the man, he lives about 20 min from me. I told him all about myself, how I take care of my own rabbit, what I feed her, how he would get free range time in the guest room, veggies, oxbow pellets, tons of love, etc. He responded back quickly, he was excited to hear from an experienced rabbit owner. (I’m not THAT experienced but I am very responsbale and not stupid.) He has to sell his rabbit because he is moving to an apartment that doesn’t take pets. His email was a bit strange after I responded again since he didn’t offer to meet up and have a bun date. He spelled so many words wrong and didn’t form sentences correctly. So after I tell him I am in college and I can’t spend a arm and a leg for him (I adopted Bun for $15 and I have her pedigree papers and winnings from the shows) I was expecting a small adoption fee since I think that is more reasonable knowing the bunny is going to an amazing home. He replies that he is getting OFFERS of 75-100 bucks! I understand he is neutered but …no thanks If I am going to pay that much I am going to save one from being put to sleep at the shelter. I’ve seen purebred Anogoras going for 75 with papers but not this rabbit, oh and by the way he tried to tell me he is also a netherland dwarf, and his rabbit is a lop! lol! So after I politely told him that 100 was too much for me to spend and I wish him the best trying to find a new home; he responded back that I know nothing about rabbits and he is so glad he found someone down to earth that won’t rip him off.   LOL!!!!!!!   He doesn’t even know what breed of rabbit he has but he has the nerve to be rude to me just because I told him I can’t afford to pay that much? What a tool! On closer inspection of the add he origionally posted, I did see that he wanted to give his rabbit to  “the highest bidder” Okay thats fine, I can’t spend that much right now when I don’t exactly need another rabbit anyways, and I would be much better off going to the local shelter. I responded back and put him in his place and then blocked him. I had such good luck with Bun and drove over 2 hours to get her and dealt with such a nice family, this just blew my mind. I told him that just because I don’t want to pay $100 on his rabbit doesn’t make me not know anything about rabbits, at least I am a responsable pet owner and don’t try to sell mine like its ebay when I can’t take care of them anymore. I told him to try finding an apartment that will take animals and don’t try to insult me when I am polite and actually wished you the best to find him a great home that the rabbit deserves. Then I said a few choice words and blocked him. No one insults me when they can’t even form a sentence!

That is awful- but this world is filled with awful things and stupid people.  It sounds like he might even be an animal re-seller.  There are people out there that get pets- especially purebred animals- for free or really cheap- pretend that they are a good home.  And then turn around and sell the animals to ANYONE  for a profit.  Unfortunately Craigslist has a lot of anonymity.

At least you avoided an idiot  that really did not care about his bunny at all.

I just really wasn’t expecting him to turn around and insult me after I told him I couldn’t pay that much. Like I said if I wanted to pay 100$ it would be at a shelter to save a rabbit. It was just all so strange. This is a picture of the rabbit

And he claims its a Netherland Dwarf… But I am the stupid one who knows nothing about rabbits O_o But he emailed me being so excited at first to hear from an “experienced rabbit owner” *Sigh*

Lintini, I know that is insulting and frustrating, but I just want to caution you about too much pesonal information to strangers from websites. (even me, now that I think about it.) If you see another and respond again, please wait to give out any contact or location info. other than the email you use to respond. If you go to see a bunny, bring a friend along. And if he can’t spell, don’t engage anymore in conflict. Just delete the insults and be glad you’re not doing business with him. I would hate to see you get in the sights of someone disturbed or harmful. I think a shelter is good for having screened people there who understand animals, not questionable ads that may try to lure little bunny lovers.

I didn’t give away any personal information other than I lived in short distance to him or how I took care of my own rabbit. My boyfriend would have come with me, just like he did when I adopted Bun. I know there are a ton of creeps on the internet. There are a few nice looking buns in the shelter near me that I might check out and see if they are friendly, but for now I think I am done with craigslist. Thank you for the concern and I am really glad I didn’t end up meeting this person.

 

edit: Oh I see in my first post “I told him all about myself” I meant that what I told him was that I am a responsable pet owner, etc. Nothing more, oops! I see how you were concerned, silly me.

Has anyone else noticed that alot of people selling or giving rabbits away say they are Nethies or Rexes? Iv seent his soo many times and am like wth.

I am sorry that person insulted you and your intelligence! Even I know that is not an Netherland!! That person is just out to make money and I feel terrible for the rabbit involved I found my chinchilla on CL and talked via email with her for a while and exchanged #s. I went to meet her and her chinchilla (now mine!) in person. It’s sad that some people are just in it for the cash and not the animal’s well being!! Just becareful and maybe if you want another bunny, go to your local HS or shelter?

Yea when I see the right rabbit to adopt I will know. There is a very handsome male at the local shelter that I might go see tomorrow.

He looks like he would make a good husbun. I need to find out if they do bunny dating. I don’t want to go in blind and end up with rabbits that don’t get along. I don’t know I’m just looking. I can’t help it now I love rabbits and I want Bun to be happy. I am starting school soon and I think she would like a friend for when I am at class.

This guy caught my eye too…but it says he is a baby in the description, which puts up a small red flag. Hopefully it was just a typo?

Ugh I am mad that gmail won’t let you actually “block” someones emails. They just go right to the trash bin. So since I am curious I saw that he responded to me and he still claims that a 2 year old rabbit is a baby. I asked him then why it had to be neutered since if it was “still a baby” I just need to let it go but he makes me so mad. He is so ARrrgh!! So somehow because his 2 year old rabbit is still a baby…he is justifying that I am stupid and should pay him 100$. Why oh WHY did I check that email in my trash can. *let it go lindsey let it go* I feel so sorry for that rabbit. I hope someone very caring and responsible has adopted him.

Lintini: the bunny is adorable, really adorable, but the man does not match. i hope the bunny meet someone else, who loves bunny more than money. but, 100 bucks? no. not only because it’s a stupid price, also, the man would be encouraged to make money through the same way. maybe he would reproduce baby bunnies, maybe he would buy some with cheap price and sell for higher. so, we say no, not a no to the poor bunny ( i love him too, he is beautiful ), but a no to one who wanna be rich by ignominious way. if a 2-year-bunny is baby, my grandma’s still in high school. be well, you’ll find a friend for Bun. oh, i love Bun’s nose and butt, my favorate, haha

Thank you for your posts Monkey and Lancy. I just have to forget about it. It is very true what you said Lancy, who knows what that guy is really up to. Bun’s nose and tail crack me up too. I have to run off now and put some clothes away, the 4 month old puppy is running off with them! I’ll just stop checking my trash bin!

I am so suspicious of people. Did he neuter the rabbit himself, where did he get him? How long has he had him?

People do purchase animals for very little money (or get them free!) by playing the “loving, forever home” card… and turn around and try to make a buck. Maybe a year or two ago, a BB member was rehoming a rabbit she had rescued, she provided vet care, neutered, did thorough screenings of all potential adopters (including HOME VISITS if I remember correctly), picked who she thought was the best one, and some time later found out the woman was selling the bunny with a big price tag… It happens.

I think a reputable rescue is a great idea. That way you know what you’re getting.

The listing for Picasso is great- I love the description they came up with for his coloring and spots.

I always get so ticked off when I read craigslist pet ads.  Especially the bunny ads, yet I still look anyway.  Even though I am not getting another bunny.  I am visiting my Mom and looked at the ads for her area and there is the most beautiful shaded bunny….

  (I can’t find the listing now…so maybe that is only a good thing)

I love bunnies that look like Siamese cats but with white markings also- I hope I don’t ever see a lop like that or I might be in trouble….

I’m sorry that you had that experience.  Though from your description it sounds like this guy was asking for the extra $ for profit only, in other cases, I do understand a higher price ($75 – 100 is still cheaper than most neuter surgeries)  and some people really do raise the price to prevent  sneaky snake food inquiries, as well as it helps them gage whether the person would have the money for long-term care and medical emergencies for their “loved” bunny.    IF that were the case though, he could have just explained that, but instead he chose to be rude (was probably just defensive due ot him having a  lack of knowledge about things) but either way, I would  definitely not give one more ounce of energy to it.  Delete the last email, take a deep breath, and shake that “rude” residue off.
