Okay, I’m not sure why I bought him, but I did. My mom lost 2 birds in the last couple of months. A bush parakeet that was about 13-14 and her cockatiel that was 22 (older than me!). So he wanted to get a budgie friend for her English budgie (they have bigger heads and are bigger all around). So I went with her and she said I could put another bird in her cage. Hence Zazu. He’s so pretty! He’s mostly white and blue, but it looks like someone took a highlighter pen and drew all over him so he’s got a lot of yellow and green where the highlighter was over the blue. Plus he has the normal black stripes. I’ve been working on hand taming him and in only a day I got him to sit on my finger for about an hour (my finger hurt after that). And then the next day I taught him to step up onto a finger. He’s a super fast learner! He already cheeps at my car when I pull up (my mom hears him). Having him makes me realize how underrated parakeets are as pets! I will get pictures of him tomorrow. Does anyone else have any birdie friends? (am I right in thinking that Katnip was the one who had babies?)

He sounds pretty – though I am having trouble picturing him from your description……..maybe a photo might help. When he’s ok with it of course.
Zazu is a cool name. Where did you get that from?

Yep-  It is me that has birds.  I have one very tame pet parrot- a red bellied parrot named Kirby.  And I have 2 pairs of Senegals, 1 pair of Timneh African Greys, 1 lone lovebird and 1 lone Senegal.  I have only ever had 2 fertile eggs hatch from my parrots- but I hand raised Muppet and Beaker and they are just getting fully weaned about now.

Birds are so amazing to me- but some of the bigger birds can be scary since they can bite/pinch so hard.  I did not “pair” the birds up that I have- I got them from someone else already paired and they seem happy.

My lovebird is by far the smallest- and seems to be close to the noisiest and messiest.  Even when he is asleep he chirps a lot.  His cage is next to the lone Senegal cage- and they always hang out by each other- so I think they like each others company.

I’d love to see a picture – he sounds gorgeous. I have a cockatiel named Mozart – he’s absolutely not musical though unless screaming counts as music.

I love the Bungies too and if I didn’t have Mozart I’d definitely consider a Bungie.

I’m a little afraid of those big birds too – I know a lady who has I think 4 of them and they are all rescues. The Amazon Parrot (I think that’s what he is) actually broke her thumb. He apparently has some emotional issues. They are amazing but they just scare me…I wouldn’t be confident enough to handle them.

Here you go! I didn’t get the camera back until now. And yes, Zazu was taken from the Lion King.

This second bird is the one my mom got. Her name is Periwinkle.

This English Budgie is my mom’s as well.

And this is the cage they all live in.

                        One of my mom’s finch.

My mom’s 15 year old bush parakeet, Ruby.

And one more picture of Zazu. I’ll try to get one tomorrow of his back since it’s really pretty too.

The whole bunch are pretty! I really like Zazu’s electric blue cheek feathers. Is there a proper name for cheek feathers?

Gorgeous! Zazu does look like he’s watercolored (I know that’s not a word). The English Budgie is pudgy isn’t he – very pretty.

                                    I had budgies when I was young-my parents have the cutest story of Darwin-their boy budgie (his band was clear but the store told them was a boy) who was taught to fight and buzz the dog until the male budgie came along;

                                    and darwin became darwinia

-with a pink band-who laid eggs and all! LOL Darwin was a girl!

What a cute bird! I want to get another bird. My brother gave me one of his canaries, and we named him James Bond, but he was such a male and sang at the top of his lungs all day long, which didn’t work for my neighbors, haha, so I brought him back to my brother. He said that James Bond will sit right next to a lady on a perch and sing right in her face. My mom says that all the females are going to be deaf!

Nope, they are very quiet to me. On that note, my mom has had birds in the house since I was born so I have completely tuned them out. We did have a parrot, and Indian Ring Neck, but he was very loud and we had to find another home for him/her.

I got him to step up on my hand in the cage! For the last couple of days I’ve had to catch and pick him up with a towel, so we’re already making progress.

On that note, while he doesn’t live in my room, I do bring him in there to play since it’s a safe, cat free zone. He doesn’t come in contact with my rabbits, but is there anything I should worry about for either species?

Well, if the rabbit does that front paw lunge thing & connected with the budgie, I think the budgie would get hurt.
Also my budgies like to sit on the edge of the hay rack & pick at the seed heads so I try to watch very carefully for any signs of bird poop in the hay, well the cage too but it’s easy to see there.
A friends mom had a litter trained budgie years ago. Honest, I swear. I have no idea how she did it. Maybe she was a bird whisperer? LOL

Oh they’re pretty! Zazu is a good name choice, especially for him because he’s got quite the appropriate colors. Maybe upload us a video after he’s tamed? I’d really like to see what budgies are like! I’ve only ever had a cockatiel and a few wild birds who fell out of their nests and we let back into the wild.

My boyfriend and I are considering moving into an apartment together this winter so naturally my BUNNY need keeps cropping up. He thinks getting a bird could be fun. I think so too but… the reason I don’t have an animal now is I don’t want to have to get sitters and such… so if I take on that responsibility it’s gonna be for a bun first!

<3 birds though. I'd love to spend some time with one, I haven't had one in over 10 years… they ARE very interesting pets. and lately I've been on a bird-themed binge my bedspread is damask with birds:

and I got this necklace from urban outfitters:

Oh he’s pretty much already tamed, at least as much as i thought he would be a month or more from now! I am working on getting him to be okay with petting and just being more comfortable when out of the cage so maybe he will talk. If I can find the camera I will get a video of him now, and my trying to get him onto my finger while holding the camera. lol.

Also, I’m not sure if this is just because we are lucky or what, but (small!)birds seem sooooo much less expensive than rabbits. In the 22 years my mom had her cockatiel she never had to take her to the vet and she was very healthy! On that note, the birds we have had over the years have seemed okay one moment and dead the next. I think they are like rabbits; since they are prey animals they hide the fact they are ill very well.

Oh, and I love those things! My mom has a necklace like that she got from Cookie Lee (an in home jewelry party thing). She used to wear it all the time! And I love the green bedspread. Green is one of my favorite colors.

That went HORRIBLE! So I took a first video of me trying to get him to hop onto my finger. Well of course he won’t do it. So I stop the video, and one of my mom’s finch flies out! My boyfriend and I literally chased her from one end of the house to the other. Mind you this finch looks like she’s at death’s door, but no, she has plenty of spunk in her! Then after we finally catch her and put her away Zazu hops up happily onto my finger and out of the cage he goes. So I take a second video of him sitting on my finger. That goes good until I stop recording and put the camera down. Then he decides to fly away! Mind you, his wings are supposedly clipped, but no, he still manages to get out into the dog pen. So I hear him scream and I think the worst! There are only chihuahuas out there, but still. I think the chi only nosed him since he’s doing fine now (this happened yesterday). After that I re-clipped his wings and he sat on my shoulder like a good boy for the rest of his time out. I think Zazu doesn’t like cameras… So I’ll post the videos sometime soon I hope. Just know that all the action happened off camera!
