First off, I would like to say that Fine Cooking is an excellent magazine – they would not be asking for opinions on this subject if they were not!

I have actually worked with some of the editors over there – I respect them. Therefore, I’m asking y’all to go for honey – not vinegar!

But, they are asking – so, lets tell them how we feel about eating rabbits:

I didn’t sign up for an account yet but… the link Sage posted wasn’t working for me…

Ick. The thought of eating rabbits turns my stomach…. Bleh.  I would NEVER be able to do that.  My grandpa and his parents used to raise NZs during WWII for food – of course, he doesn’t anymore.  I still don’t agree with it, but at least then they had the NEED to eat rabbits.

I wish something could be done to diminish the plight of commercial rabbits. There will always be people raising them for food but they shouldn’t be allowed to keep rabbits any which way they choose, processing them any which way they know or don’t know how… rabbits need protection from this but they fall between the cracks. Rabbits are considered multi-purpose animals which is different from livestock and livestock laws don’t apply.

Commercial raisers are advocating now for changing the term for rabbit as food to something different, like cow meat is called ‘beef’, to counteract people’s association with cute bunnies.

I don’t know if I can find honey in this.

By “honey” I just mean be polite – it think it is more affective than telling people how “stupid or uneducated” they are.

I don’t believe either you would get anywhere by being rude. So agreed. Honey-polite !

Wow, I read some of those responses and I have to wonder what the editor is going to do or if they wish they had ever asked. There’s alot coming from all sides there. Glad I’m not the editor.

My husband and I watch “Gordon Ramsay’s F Word” on BBC America and every season he raises some type of animal that is served at the end of the “season”- but he raises them the best possible way, high quality feed, etc.

So far he has raised pigs, turkeys, lambs, cows (veal)- and I told my huband that if he raises rabbits we are NOT WATCHING any of that season.

I just can’t justify eating rabbit personally- as I love my bunnies so much that it distresses me to think of other bunnies being eaten.

Katnip I think he’s already done that – I remember hearing all about it on some of my other rabbit lists. There was some controversy actually concerning his son and a rabbit.

                        On a similar topic:
I just heard on the news a little snippet about Michael Vick – some company is donating dog food to shelters every time Vick gets tackled! Let’s hope that inspires some opposing teams!

First of all, I think that all cultures/traditions should be respected. At the same time, we all have the rights and freedom to have our own opinions and act according to them. In Alaska and Japan, they have been eating whales. In Asia, some countries eat dogs and cats.

I personally would never eat bunnies, cats, nor dogs. When I was in New Orleans, I went to a restaurant and when I found out that they serve rabbits I left. I just could not stay. Like others say, I’m more concerned about the conditions that they are raised in and how humanely they are treated until prepared. This applies to all the animals. I just happen to be more attached to certain animals compared to cows or chicken.

It is too bad that the very people who would care about those conditions tend to be the same that won’t get involved in this subject because it is so painful to them. It is us rabbit enthusiasts that care about rabbit welfare in so many ways but most pet rabbit owners cannot handle the topic of commercial rabbits. I do feel their discomfort,  but who is going to speak for those rabbits? The meat people surely aren’t going to.
