        Hi all!

Well we are planning on putting on our construction hats soon to build a nice big C and C cage for Miss Bella Bun Bun! We are making it large enough for both her and Valen, but something we can split in half in case their intros don’t go as planned. The size is going to be about 6 cubes arcoss and 4 cubes wide, with 2 levels.  I am planning to buy them from Target. So my question is this:

What kind of wood is safe to make shelves/platforms to attach to the sides of the cubes? We wanted to make a wooden ramp to get to the level where either their bedroom or kitchen area will be….lol!

Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated! We can’t wait to get started!!

Stay away from woods that come from trees with pitted fruits: cherry, peach, etc. Pine, cedar, and birch are safe, but make sure they are un-treated. Good luck, I cant wait to see the final product!

Ok great! I know Pine is safe shelving for Chinchillas (I have 2) so I wasn’t sure if it was safe for Rabbits. Thanks so much! Once we get finished I will be sure to post pics of the Bun Mansion!

Oooo sounds fun! Good luck with the project! Are C and C cages the same as the NIC cages? Anyway, a word of warning: if you have to split the cage in half to separate the buns, make sure the partition is not just a NIC cube or anything with holes in it. If they’re fighting, you don’t want them to be able to reach through and bite/scratch each other. If possible, make a sort of “no-man’s-land” a few inches wide between the two cages, so each cage has a wall. That way they can still see/smell each other, but not touch. But hopefully you won’t have to do that at all and the bonding goes smoothly!

As mrmac said-no pitted fruit woods; However all hardwoods are to be avoided as well. I’d choose untreated pine or cedar since we know those are safe-or apple wood.

You have post pictures when construction is complete-it’s kind of a rule-I didn’t make it up or anything

Another option for shelving is closet shelving.  Its sold at Lowes or Home Depot.

They will cut it to size right there at the store for you, its sturdy, and doesnt need any additional supports.  Before my bunnies had full roam of the entire downstairs they had a big two story cage (outside made of an x-pen) with a ramp and long second level made of this shelving.  You will have to line it with something (carpet, cabinet liner, lineoleum, etc) because there are gaps between the bars.  But my bunnies LOVE this stuff.  I also think its much easier to use than those NIC cubes because it comes in long (up to 12ft) sheets.  They sell it in two different widths (1 ft and 1 1/2 ft).  I bought 1 ft back when I had just the one bunny…. and now I wish I would have gotten the wider stuff…. but my two buns lay up there together and hop over one another all the time with no problems.

Depending on the setup of the bunny’s room you might actually be able to attach the shelves right to the wall and then they could jump from one leve to the next….. how cool would that be??

Yes, we are planning on using untreated pine shelving. I will be sure to post pictures of the masterpiece when it’s completed!

I am not sure what an NIC cage is, but C and C cage is cubes and coroplast.

That is a great idea, Rachel! I love it!! Thanks for sharing!
