I feel like a terrible terrible person. I woke up today and went out back and there were baby rats all over. The total right now is 8 5 still alive and 3 already dead. We decided it best to just kill them. Momma wasnt taken care of them and they are dieing slowly outside in the sun with no food and water. It breaks my heart but they are wild rats and plus I can not stand to look at them. Ugh feeling really terrible

How big are they? I hate having rats around (when I lived in Ontario) because you can bet everybody is putting out the nasty Warfarin for them and many animals get poisoned.

edit: Tabalab, you have cats right? If you saw the rats your neighbors did too and they might put out poison. Do your cats go outside by themselves? Be extra careful.

If the mom wasn’t taking care of them then chances are they already do have something wrong with them and will die anyways. Are you going to have animal control or a vet put them out of their misery?

My cat is inside only! They are already dead my boyfriend killed them I couldn’t do it. They were tiny little baby’s eyes not even open but 3 out of 8 was already dead from momma not taking care of them and them being out in the sun. One went back into the hole under our stairs. I feel bad but this also means we have rats living under our house, which is a huge problem.

I say it again, watch out for someone putting out poison, seriously. If they are under your house, will your boyfriend’s dad want to get rid of them that way?

I lived in someone’s basement once and the people thought they had mice and I asked where they put the poison. They assured me nowhere near where my dog went. Well, there was a bowl right on the floor in one of the bedrooms and my dog ate it up.
I do believe these pellets might be alluring to rabbits also.
tabalab, I don’t know your situation but I don’t want anyone to go through what I went through. Where there is vermin, people eventally resort to poisonous bait.

Most rodent poison is a blood thinner type product- it kills the rats as they will bleed to death and their blood is unable to clot.  If a dog or cats eats the rat or mouse that ingested the poison- the dog/cat will have ingested the same amount of poison and it can be fatal.  Also most of these poisons are designed to attract rodents- so I believe they have a sweet smell/flavor and I think that would attract bunnies.  And the side affects from ingesting rat poison or a rat that ate poison can take weeks to show up as a problem- it does not generally happen immediately.

I know that some exterminators can use stuff that is pet friendly- as the Humane Society I worked at and the vet clinic I work for only use pet friendly methods- but I am not sure what those methods are.  It would be worth your while to do some research before choosing a method to remove the rats.
