Has anyone noticed that their male rabbit’s coat got fluffier after neutering? Neutered dogs sometimes change to a softer coat — but rabbits? Clifford, little Holland Lop I have at my house right now, came to me a short time after his surgery and he had the greasiest coat I had ever seen on a rabbit, not very nice to touch. Now it’s been a few weeks and I find that Clifford’s coat is getting fluffier!

I didn’t get Hubble until after he was already neutered, but he seriously has the best fur of any rabbit I’ve ever felt. It feels like chinchilla fur (the little mouse looking creatures, not chinchilla rabbits). Though in your case, it could just be that he is keeping himself cleaner now that he’s neutered too. Or he just doesn’t have the hormones to keep up that stink. With male rats, neutering them is like night and day. They don’t produce as much of that musk and are much more pleasant to own! So maybe something similar is happening with Clifford.

            Interesting. Did you have rats?
Clifford did have a strong stink to him. I thought, maybe those hormones that make the coat greasy are ones that decrease after neutering, thus making the hairs fluffy.

I used to have 5 rats, now I’m down to two. They have unfortunately short lifespans. My first girl, Betty, passed away about a month ago. She was just over 2 years. They tend to be a lot more personable than rabbits, but I am slightly allergic to them so it’d kind of a bummer. Neutering makes a world of difference with my allergies though. And the reason for that is because the males stop producing the musk (urine) that I’m allergic to. So I’m guessing that something similar is happening with Clifford. Ah, the joys of neutering!

That’s really interesting. Apparently hormones can affect the coat/ cause fur loss, so his neuter could well have cleared up a problem. Also, his former living conditions may have contributed to the state of his coat. Great that he’s now a fluff ball!

I really need my camera problem fixed so I can post a new close-up photo of him. He looks very soft now, not streaky. Clifford I will miss most when he has to go home.
