I just saw this from Jen at Judge’s Park and wanted to pass it along because it is so heartbreaking!  Wish I could take this little guy in and spoil him rotten but with 2 and fostering another one we don’t have any room.

Just today, we had a rabbit surrendered to us. One of our vets called us this morning saying that someone had wanted to euthanize their bunny because they didn’t want it anymore, and had then decided to turn it loose. I got in contact with this person immediately. She explained to me she had the bunny for about 7 years, he had suddenly decided to not use his litter box, and was covered in urine and feces, and she just didn’t want “it” anymore. So she had turned him loose and he had been outside for 2 days, but he just “wouldn’t go away.” I gritted my teeth and calmly told her to catch him and bring him here (even though we really don’t have room).
They showed up with him this evening. “Dirt” as his name has been for the last 7 years, is in bad shape. He has severe urine scald, and we’re guessing some other urinary problems because of the amount of urine he is producing. He also has fly strike on his ears from being outside and he is very skinny. His name is fitting because that is how they’ve treated him the last 6 years. And guess what they got him for? Easter, 7 years ago. Just another case of someone buying a bunny for Easter and then neglecting him and not caring for the rest of his life.
Cases like this just make me so sad. They showed up in a nice flashy car, and were well dressed. And yet, they can neglect a bunny and not provide much needed veterinary care. He was just a throwaway object. We’ve decided to change his name to Lucky. He’s a Lucky boy to have someone care enough about his welfare to call us. We will be bringing him to the vet as soon as we can get him an appointment, and pictures will be posted soon. He’s had a rear end washing, and given some fresh bedding, some good food (they were feeding him squirrel food) and a blanket to lie on (he’s been living on wire).
And the other sad part is that we can’t do anything about it. Cases like this with rabbits aren’t important in many people’s eyes. We would never able to get them to pay for their actions. If anyone knows how we can, let me know, we have her information. And they have a child who came with them, who now thinks it is okay to not provide an animal with vet care, turn it loose and abandon it.
This is why we need to educate! Pass Lucky’s story along. People need to know that animals need care. This 7 year old boy will be hard to adopt out because of his age. If you know of anyone who would want to adopt him and let him live out his days spoiled, let me know.
        Jen

I’d like them to imagine themselves been turfed out of their home, Maybe they’d hang around it trying to get in as it’s all they’ve got, but someone wouldn’t allow it and kept shooing them away. So demented that they did this to their pet of 7 years!
I have a feeling he’s going to do really well though – he seems a survivor.

The only thing I can think of is that Jen could contact his former owners to tell them she’s glad they brought him in (even though they really don’t deserve credit but it gives a positive start to communications). She could update them on his health then let them know it’s actually illegal to release them (is it?) and if they know of anyone else with rabbits or other pets, to please pass this information on.

Doesn’t seem much point in reprimanding them now but at least they might be enlightened and set better example to their child.

What a gorgeous rabbit. Unfortunately this is common with many pets. We’ve become a throw away society.

Honestly I don’t think she needs to do or say anything to these people at this point since she has Lucky now and he’s safe and in her care. I know I would never update someone on the rabbit they dumped in this fashion, they don’t deserve an update – I don’t think she has that intention anyway.

I’m sure he will find a more loving home now.

I don’t think they would care anyways, they didn’t care enough to take care of him.  It’s sad though, you see these cases with abused dogs and cats and everyone’s like OMG, but they never mention the abuse of rabbits.    Just like the case of Gracie, she was abused and hit, have the scars on her ears to prove it.  But nothing happened with the owners and they still have another bunny (they were trying to breed).  I just can’t see how they could do this to a pet that has been with the family for 7 years, you would think after awhile they would get sort of attached to this beautiful creature.  *sigh*

She just got 3 more rabbits from a New Mexico seizure of 300!  God, I don’t even know how people have that many rabbits?!  There’s another shelter that had a seizure of 200 that needs help too.  She is getting full!

because people breed them and realize hey not that many people want rabbits or dumb pet stores have all these rabbits in one cage. My bf told me that all the rabbits were raised with lil piggies the only separate rabbit was a black lion head and he had piggies in his cage as well

The behaviour of these people is unforgivable. I can’t imagine who wouldn’t want this beautiful rabbit, if I were closer he’d come home with me for whatever time he has left and would receive as much love as I could possibly cram into every day.
There’s no excuse for tossing away a pet who’s been with you for so long. Shame on them and may there be a supremely hot place down below waiting for them. *nods*
