Hi, BinkyBunniers,

I just want to say how truly caring and devoted our members are, to both their own bunnies, bunnies in general, and to this site. You make it a great place to drop by daily, and I thank you for that. It's like a fuzzy, cyberspace place to share our stories and dilemmas, goofy pix and poignant moments that only other house bunny slaves can share. It's nice, and you guys are nice, too.

I've learned a lot about the internet in the last year as a Forum Leader here, and a term and practice I've learned, among others, is Troll and trolling. I can't understand the practice - why waste your own time? - but it seems that there are people out there with nothing better to do than take advantage of the anonymity provided by the internet to find a stable group of folks who come together for a mutual interest and stir things up. Maybe it's fun to read. Maybe it's a relief from boredom and the tedium of being alone when people avoid you in person. But it's lousy and it happens. So Trolls are identified and dumped as soon as possible. Thus, the Alerts button.

But what if someone knows about the limits set on a site like this and is just shy of a bonafied troll? Nothing asked, no advice needed, just hanging around to push people's buttons, start arguements and generally be a pain in the furry butt? What then?

We are not fish.

We don't have to take the bait.

Bait works because it is disguised as something else, often in our case a legitimate question or concern, and then the controversy begins.

So, as someone who knows how passionate and compassionate our members here are, I am asking you to be on the lookout for bait.

It does not feed your souls. Don't eat it. Don't swallow bull when you read it. Step back, hit the Alert button if you want to, close the post, and go back to the legitimate interactions with the other members who really need and want your advice and welcome your input. And your pictures. And your sharing in their lives with furbabies large and small.

If you want to be a fish, I'll get you the link for an aquatic website. But please think before biting bait. We care and want you to enjoy your time here.

Thanks for reading. RP

P.S. Not a single name is being mentioned here. And I don't want to see any mention of any names in replies. They will be deleted. But if you find yourself bristling reading this because you think I mean you, pay attention to that uncomfortable feeling. It's called shame. You know if you deserve to be feeling it.

Thanks for this post!

I admit, I've trolled other sites in the past. It can be fun, sure, but if you're doing it to pull apart a community or hurt other people, that's just cruel. Is it really worth getting so many people all worked up just so that you can get a few laughs?

Glad you guys understand.

I just want to add that humor, the kind we share, is NOT trolling. Poking fun at someone you know to be a friend who won't mind or will poke back, is not the same as getting a laugh - alone - at someone else's expense. I love our irreverent humor here, so I don't include that in my caution.

Yeah, I don't think BB would be as fun if we were all a bunch of old fuddy-duddys.

When I saw the title of this thread my first thought was of Scooter's fish that lives in his office - his name is Bait.

Grumpybun, I am flattered.

Scooter here. Actually the current office fish (Betta splendus aka Siamese fighting fish) is named Bait IV. His various predecessors have since been given honorable "burials at sea", if you know what I mean....Given a betta's typical life span, we figure we'll be around Bait XVII or so by the time I retire.

But yeah, RabbitPam's original point is well taken and I'm also glad she brought it up.

I'm feeling particularly edgy about a particular recurring topic on BB at the moment, and it is hard, but I am trying to be perky and super chatty because i figure all us responsible bunny owners are not here for the owner (in this case) we are here to advise on how to improve the bunnies situation.... Sometimes it takes a lot of counting to ten before I type to remember this, but I guess its better than telling someone what i really think of THEM when it's actually about the bunnies welfare. *deep breaths*
But seriously.... Some ppl can be so thick when it comes to asking for advice.

I guess I haven't been around enough lately to see this, but I hope everyone here knows that I do tend to be rather flip with my posts, but forget how poorly that comes across online. If I have offended anyone at all, or spoken out of turn, I am truly sorry.

Now for an OT alert:
Scooter, I had one Betta when I was young. I guess I didn't give him a decent enough tank (my dad would only sacrifice one large brandy glass, and no, there was no brandy in it) and when I was at school one day, he jumped out of the glass to his death on my bedroom floor. I found him when I got home. I've almost never been so devastated at the loss of a fish. Other rivals for my grief in that regard were my first goldfish, and my last one that passed recently.
Fish are great creatures, but I really prefer the warm and fuzzy kind. It's much easier to tell when they are depressed about something.
Sorry for the OT. Just couldn't let those comments about bettas go unaddressed.

MimzMum: Scooter here. I can easily see how finding the fish like that can be traumatic, especially when young!

The original Bait was "fish-sat" when I was out of town at a conference by a brand-new graduate student who had just joined my group. Well, Bait I wound up going to the big goldfish bowl in the sky while I was gone. The student was pretty nervous: oh great, the boss's fish kicked off while I was taking care of it, and I just joined up. What's he gonna do to me?!? I assured him when I found out that I just couldn't get worked up about it, especially as it was at the end of its life cycle. And besides, Bait II cost only $3.99.

This particular student is defending his doctoral dissertation in about a month, so I have an amusing story to tell at his defense.

Yes, but it's probably the same troll over and over. We just spotted a repeat offender. It's just so annoying because it wastes your time and energy as well as ours, and we want to be serving the real members, and you want to be helping each other as well. Maybe that's why they call bait WORMS. yuck.

People who could "troll" a site like this should be ashamed!

Kudos to the folks running the show here that they're working so hard to crack down on trolls. I've been to a handful of other forums across the web and unchecked trolling can have some really nasty effects over time. The community here seems funny, supportive, and genuinely caring and it'd break my heart to see some malicious weirdo come in and try to tear that apart.

Good job mod team!
