O.K. so I went through a lot of trouble making bunny doors & windows in a big cardboard box and stuffing hay in holes I made (What a mess!) and my two want nothing to do with it.  They have given it the proverbial "butt." Any ideas to spur their interest?

hmmm.  Maybe they just don’t care about boxes.  What about tubes?  You can get cardboard tubes (meant for pouring cement) at home depot type of stores.

Hmm, have one of those and Bosai is the only one who likes it.  He loves to destroy things too which totally has me puzzled with the cardboard box! Oh well, back to the regular wicker laundry basket.  Here I was just trying to give them something new & exiting too! Poop!

Don’t know about you but Nel seems to love a cardboard box with a door cut in it.  Anything that can be hidden in is endless entertainment for her.

Awe you have a bunny that is very sweet and not so picky like mine are, it sounds.  My two, I just don’t know about them, I give them a paper bag and they are totally entralled so you would think that a cardboard box would be even better, but alas no. Another thing they like is an inverted natural wicker laundry basket with a hole cut larger where the handle is so their heinees can fit through.  Although when they get to chewing on it (my destructo-buns) the splinters from it really hurt if you happen to catch one on the bottom of your foot or even when scooping up the pieces.  I’ve resorted to one of the non-electric floor sweepers for that though and it works great!

Have you tried putting hay or treats inside? at least they will go inside and explore, I noticed it takes a bunny a few times before he is confortable with new toys.

I knuckled down & spent the other evening making a new cardboard heaven for the terrible two. It has steps, and tunnels and string to chew through. Are they interested? Are they buggery. Instead they walk straight past without so much as a sniff and with teeth-a gnashing…head straight for the laptop charger wire! I wouldn’t mind so much were it not for the fact i “recycled” some unwanted pc cables from work for them to chew to their little hearts content, and they have totally ignored them.

Sorry I didn’t see your post sooner Maghy7! Hmm, I tried the treat inside and they looked at me like I was stark raving mad and want table-side service from me. Wow my two are spoiled…I think maybe I’ll try getting those two to go at one of the willow cubes or grass ball that I see in the BB store and put that inside to see. I’m beginning to wonder if it has to do with the size of my bunnies too. They’re big and so the only thing that really seems to get them going is the natural wicker laundry basket turned upside down with a larger hole cut where the hand hold is.

Spacehopper – My two gladly go for the vacuum cleaner cord anyday over the cardboard box the nerve!

Oohh Sprinkles loved the box idea … she would chin it to death!  LOL.  Lily would stand on the top of the box and rip it to shreds but was not keen on venturing inside.

I will have to set the box up for Luey … might keep him away from my DVD covers as he loves to chew and throw those around and eat my mags.

                        Dawn xx

WHOOOOOOOHOOOOO!!!!! Today I am VERY tired after a disturbed night but I can’t complain. I’m now the proud mama of 2 BOX LOVING BUNS! I moved the cleverly crafted mishmash of boxes with box steps, box tunnels, “carved” gothic style doorways, string curtains etc into the bedroom last night. For some odd reason Bettie wasn’t too happy at my bedtime and spent AGES thumping over and over again, I finally managed to drift off to sleep amidst the thumping and the boyfriend’s huffings & puffings, and remaking the bed with me in it, only to be awoken by the constant honking of the buns as they chased each other around the bedroom, leaping into their cage, leaping out again, and finally settling into a good old chomping of the cardboard creation.
This morning it appeared Brian had thoroughly worn himself out as he was stretched out asleep by the cushions they use to get on the bed (I’ve never seen him sleeping anywhere but in his cage or under the bed), and Bettie’s face suddenly appeared from behind the string curtain, where she continued to chomp on the cardboard. Then she disappeared, dashed through the tunnel bit, and out of the doorway, leapt over Brian, lay her head up on the cushion and had a head and ear rub, then darted back into the door, through the tunnel and carried on chewing at one of the box windows. Their antics amuse me no end. (the boyfriend, however, was not impressed) 😉

Nel enjoying her cardboard box.  She’s intent on digging a second entrance.  Which is good because now she has something to dig besides the carpet.

I got Sophie the big castle with ramps and everything and she wanted nothing to do with it for about a week. Literally. Wouldn’t even look at it. I i just left it ina corner of the living room and sure enough, LOVES it! Now, it’s her fave thing. Sometimes they are a little leary of what they don’t know and just have to get used to it before jumping in head first. Keep it in sight for a few days and see what happens. It also helps if you put some treats or seagrass in there.

Scarlet Rose, I’ll get a pic of what VERY little is left of it. One suggestion for you – it was definitely the “attraction” for my two to get straight on inside once the boyfriend was far too tired, one evening (that’s his excuse!!) to put the clean bedding I’d washed and folded and left on the bed ready to pop away later away himself before getting into bed…. he dumped it all on top of their new cardboard play area. Perhaps it was more appealling being pitch black inside and far too tempting an opportunity to miss being CLEAN bedding and their love to stake their claim on new territory??????! 🙂

Well it seems now that Brian & Bettie are absolutely 100% into their boxes. The main problem being they only seem to love their playhouse when someone goes into the bedroom! The place is silent, so off i go into the bedroom, no sooner have i sat on the bed…CHOMP CHOMP, SCUFFLE SCUFFLE CHOMP!!! It’s like a trigger for them, as you can imagine it has been VERY hard to have a decent night’s sleep, and being off work sick last week….. well, i dozed on the sofa, but NEEDED my bed… so off i go, get into bed, they both leap from under the bed, across the floor and in through the door to make as much noise as they can…EVERY TIME!!! The boyfriend was so fed up one night he covered the thing up with cushions, they did nothing more than chew through a window to gain entry.

they’ve got it “just so” as well, i’ve tried to straighten the thing up, but they are almost fighting me to put it back as they want it. 🙂 I had a nose in through the remaining WHOLE window last night, and they’ve certainly made it a home from home. They’ve dragged most of the old duvet cover that was once over the top of the boxes in through the front door and another corner in through a hole at the back and it’s all laid out in a snuggley floor, there is also a plastic carrier bag that they’re used to line one side of the main box (either a draught excluder or they realise this makes lots of extra noise. They absolutely love it, thank god…and it’s very cute seeing one of their faces peering out at you through the window/new doorway, or looking in through the front entry bit and all you can see is a tine white dot amongst the darkness….then it twitches, and you realise it’s the Bum, sat there most content as Miss Bettie creates havoc, (and more holes) in the “room next door”.

Next on the list is getting the boyriend’s grandad to create similar to …… http://www.bunnybasics.net/new-room-with-a-view-p-1163.html my god how my heart fluttered as once it did when confronted a Booda Dome!!!!

Its so cute that Bettie and Brian are making their first “home” together (now, did Bettie ask your permission to move in with her boyfriend?) My bunnies are also quite the remodelers when it comes to cardboard (except Kramer, he doesn’t get the whole remodel thing, he just EATS the cardboard to Juli’s dismay). I once had a bunny cardboard house for this HUGE californian girl, and she was soooo big that when she laid down on the second floor her head stuck out the window, and her back feet stuck out the side entrance on the second floor. She even chewed a hole in the winder so her whole dewlap could fit through! I heard that as soon as she arrived at her forever home, in two days, she declared herself a free range bunny by leaping OVER her 3 ft. high ex-pen, and refusing to return. She was tired of homes that were to small for her and now sleeps on her owners bed, and spends the day in the wicker chaise lounge!

I find the best technique to get a bunny interested in an item, is to develop an urgent need for the item yourself, then they can destruct it in 10 seconds flat.

That is a technique that works with or without the want for the rabbit to be interested. Our home phone hasn’t worked for over a month now, so we got a new one which arrived Monday. But we still couldn’t figure out why we were getting no dial tone, just thought the phone must be old, as we inherited the grotty old thing from. Plugging the new one in, I pulled on the old cable behind the sofa and it all became clear. SOMEHOW, SOMEWHEN the Weeny Bean (Brian is too big) had snuck into the living room undetected and got behind the sofa and chewed the phone (you’d think I would have thought of this as first point of thought after Brian had been holidaying at his grandparents whilst we were away, and chewed through their phone cable!)

I think the two of them have now made all the necessary remodelling to their home as bedtime is decidedly a LOT quieter!

Rabbits are hilarious in their antics and certainly have a mind of their own!!!!!! “and spends the day in the wicker chaise lounge!” I can picture her now, with a scantily attired male bun stood fanning her with a cabbage leaf whilst she lounges back, watching the world go by, being fed grapes & telling her history of the days when she was oppressed. Viva la Revolution!

Mr.B and Roxy loves their boxes!!

For Mr.B, we closed one end and left the other open, then cut 2 holes one on each side, we’ve put shredded papper in it but he just shoves it out. He’ll dig, scratch, chew and loung in the box. He also has a long skinnier tunnel like box too.

Roxy has a smaller box, perfect for her size. We folded each end closed and cut a "her size" hole in 3 of 4 sides and shoved shredded papper in it, she loves it!

My bunnies snub EVERYTHING for the first couple days! It’s so sad, I get so excited about their new present and they could care less! I’d replaced their cardboard condo (my bf said the old one was ‘ghetto looking’ and he wanted it thrown out, so I made a new one). The new one took me hours as I carefully put it together to be nice looking…It was a double wide three story bunny condo with LOTS of little windows for light and three exits in every section…And they just ignored it!!! *sigh* I eventually filled it with treats and moved their bed and put it there-Then they HAD to pay attention to it!

I purposely cut the holes a little too small and leave the flaps attached – it means more things to customize and chew!  And I tossed in an old rug for her to bunch and arrange.
