Hello, everyone! I am not really a fan of NIC condos because 1. I cannot construct anything decent for the life of me and 2. I want to feel as if Billy is a bit more free to roam around and no matter how big the condos are, they still give me a prison/cage type feeling. However, I am planning on attempting to build an NIC condo solely for the purpose of outdoor playtime. I would just use the x-pen, but I can be quite paranoid and even though we probably don’t have any in our area; I don’t want any predator birds taking Billy away especially not under my supervision (which of course I will be doing anyway). That would severely scar me for life. The flooring is what I will need some ideas with. I cannot set the condo directly onto the grass because every time I step onto the grass, a hundred little white flies or something flies off the grass so I don’t want Billy to be directly on the grass. I would like to make my own little mini-garden in a plastic tub or something and plant wheat grass etc. in it. I may need to cover it with mesh so the white mini-flies cannot get into that grass also. I don’t know. I’m really not too knowledgeable about how to handle the problem. I could just skip it altogether, but I would like for Billy to have some fresh air and fresh grass once in a while. Billy will be getting a friend soon so I would need to make the outdoor condo big enough for two bunnies to spend about 15-30 minutes a few times a week. Then I guess I will have to worry about weather taking it’s toll on the grids if I plan to leave it outside permanently. If anyone has any suggestions for the outdoor condo or ideas/photos for other outdoor playtime options, I would greatly appreciate it.

This is something that I thought of doing -> I live in an apartment complex so I can’t let Hunny & Ashes outside to play in the grass cause they use pestisides but I can keep a lil’ area outside as long as it don’t take up too much room so I was thinking of getting a cheap kiddie pool or old plastic sandbox, (If you don’t want it touching the ground you could raise it up off the ground with a skid) & filling it with soil & planting grass. Then I would put an 4′ x 4’ft pen around it (the one I have is plastic so no need to worry about rust). And if you’re worried about predators swooping in you can get a mesh net (bug netting) that’s meant to fit over a baby’s pack n play/play pen that would fit over a 4′ x 4’ft pen no problem…

I think a kiddie pool would make a wonderful mini-garden, Hunny’s Momma. Thank you for the idea. The mesh is also great. Now the only thing I’m worried about is if those tiny white fly creatures will be able to get into this grass too. Maybe if I raise it off the ground a little and cover the grass with mesh or something, it might be fine.

hunny, your plan sounds great except, if you leave it out there and your apartment complex continues to use pesticides the wind could and will drift the chemicals up on top of your bunny kingdom making your grass no better than theirs.

This is something I’ve been trying to figure out with Bunjamin too. I am obsessive when I do something new with Bunjamin. I think the nic cube could work as a protection from predators with supervision but the grass has to be pesticide free and neighbors too or blocked off because if they’re connected it could fly over (with wind). And you have to watch to make sure the bun doesn’t dig itself out. As for the white little flies, I would find that concerning… Maybe a blanket or tablecloth but that wouldn’t be able to stay out there. Neither would the grids because they would rust. Although my grids fold down pretty well.

Let me know what other ideas you guys have. Maybe we can put our heads together on this one. I can’t take Bunjamin out until next spring though because our new place has been spraying so I want to wait a while and I’ve already put my foot down that this new house is going to be pesticide free next year when we take over lawn care.

You’re right Frankie about the pesticides. I didn’t think of that… I plan on putting it on concrete spot where my kids chain up their bikes & I have a turtle shaped sandbox that the kids haven’t used in years that has a cover… Though it’s a lil’ smaller in diameter then a pool but it may work… Hmmm…

now with the cover it might work but I don’t know how grass would grow. This might be too much but if you could create a solid barrier around the hole thing 3-4ft feet high maybe no pesticides would get in it. Although there’s no guarantee. A lid work work if you did just dirt though! I heard bunnies love to dig in the dirt

We have our own backyard so I don’t have to worry about pesticides, but what I’m paranoid about is the hundreds of tiny white fly creatures that go flying up every time I step on the grass. I have no idea what those are and if they are even harmful, but I don’t want to take the chance. FrankieFlash is right about the grass not being able to grow, though, if it needs to be covered up. I thought about buying something like this for fresh grass: http://www.freshpatch.com/ . The grass is real, but I have no idea what type of grass it is etc. Do any of you think it might be safe? I know BinkyBunny sells some products from Flopper’s Garden, but I have been looking for their ‘Hydroponic Garden Grown Especially for Bunnies’ all over the internet, but have not been able to find it yet: http://thebnn.org/2011/01/12/floppers-garden-offers-bunny-botanicals/ . As for a fresh air containment area, I guess we have to keep thinking of ideas. Yes, bunnies do love to dig in just dirt so that would also be a good idea just for fresh air. How would we clean the bunnies, or should we clean them, after digging in dirt?

I wouldn’t clean them off if they dig in the dirt because rabbits and baths don’t mix. But I would put them in a box with a towel to try to wipe off some of the dirt so they don’t ingest a ton when they clean themselves.

Me being paranoid I would worry that they did treat that patch of grass since it’s made to be pooed on. What about growing your own grass in a potter, taking it out when you take the bun out. Then they get the grass experience, The grass isn’t contaminated and they still get fresh air.

Since I have to wait a year or so until I even attempt outdoor time I’m going to grow some wheat grass or something inside for Bunjamin with some other vegetables. I was thinking about putting them in plastic storage tubs for containment of the dirt inside or something like that. lol

Wheat grass is a good idea because it usually grows very fast. I bought one with everything included in a small planter. It grew fast and very tall and I let Billy eat directly from the planter, but I guess either I did not properly maintain the grass or the small package was not made to last very long. However, it did last a few weeks. I hope I don’t sound too ignorant about gardening here, but if grass/vegetables were planted in plastic storage tubs, would it be okay for the bunnies to go inside the tubs and eat/play or will that just completely destruct the garden? Or should the grass be cut and given to the bunny? I hope you know more about those things than I do. Your idea of taking the potter outside is genius. That would be a solution for everything! Lol.

I think it’d be okay. I was having the same idea with letting him romp around and eat and dig. Although I guess he could undig the plant and potentially kill it. I had a small thing of wheat grass that lasted over a month but I bought the same thing and it never sprouted. I’m not a gardner either so I don’t think you sound ignorant. Lol. Oh and I’ll be using bunny poop as fertilizer. Safest thing I know of for a bunny. My bf thinks I lost it. And when I had the small planter i had to cut it for him because he was destructing it but if it was heavy enough of a planter he couldn’t completley destruct the grass right?

Now is this crazy talk? Taking storage tub. Filling it like 2″ with soil, adding grass seeds, and bunny poop for fertilizer, wait until it grow nice and thick then making a bunny door? Of course it would have to be supervised to make sure he didn’t throw dirty everywhere but then it could be his choice whether he went in or not.

The storage tub door is a wonderful idea! I guess the tub can be near a window for sunlight. I’m not sure how much of the grass would be destroyed. I was thinking the same thing about the dirt. Maybe an old rug or something can be placed underneath. What about watering the grass, though? If the bunny door is high enough, then I guess there would need to be no worry about water leaking. That’s funny how your boyfriend thinks you’ve lost it. My best friend lives in another country and he thinks rabbits are boring because all they do is eat and poop. When I told him about litter box training, he scoffed at me. Now that Billy only uses the litter box, my best friend says that rabbits in his country wouldn’t do that; maybe it’s only American rabbits. It’s very sad how misinformed they are about pet rabbits, but for him to think that rabbits in America have some kind of super train-ability that rabbits in other countries do not possess is so silly that it made me laugh. Lol. So yes, he thinks I’ve lost it too when I go a bit “overboard” about Billy.

Haha. So not true. I just finished watching videos of wolfie in belle in the lounge section doing tricks and one is from the UK and one is from Scotland. I think maybe he’s lost it!

Oh my mom suggested last night that we put gravel or small pebbles on the bottom later of our tub gardens so the roots have a place to “take a break” from the access water. I’m a gardening novice so that’s how she explained it to me. Basically for drainage.

Yes, I think he has lost it too. So do the pebbles/gravel go on the bottom before the soil/seeds etc.? I mean, wouldn’t it be difficult to put it in the bottom later on? I have not done any type of gardening in my life which is why I’m trying to be careful.

haha well I think you would do quite a thick layer of soil before seeds, giving the roots room. But the gravel is just so the roots don’t sit in water. Rocks would work too. Although I imagine they would make it hard to move the indoor garden
