Kind of…we have the bunnies in an X pen and smaller cage (will both be in X pen but Leo just got neutered so we have to wait another week) and that is in one end of the basement family room. This area is “walled” off with wire shelving units so the bunnies can run around during each one’s play time but not get to the rest of the furniture, cords, etc

          It works well so far.

unfortunatly, in my 600 sq ft apartment, my living room is my bunny room. But I have their 2 story cage in there next to my couch that I cover with a matching throw when I have company over. doesn’t bother me having them in there since i clean their cage every other day. They run around freely all day, so it’s nice having them out and about with me.

I just graduated my Simon to his own room today. I had him in an x pen with his cage at one end in my room for the first month. He’s a big boy and was outgrowing his space not to mention waking me up at night doing a solo bunny mosh pit! He now has my guest room all to himself. He seems pretty confident in there but goes back to his cage frequently to eat and nap…and poo (thank goodness). I’m just happy to be using the space for something fun instead of just storage.

My bunny Bean has her own room. I have her cage in a corner and I let her out during the day. I have a litter box for her in one corner and some toys out in the room for her. She loves it! She can come out and run around whenever she wants but she still has her cage to retreat to when she needs some alone time. Does anyone have any good ideas for ways to make the room more entertaining for her?

Sorta…the bunnies cant completely free roam because it isn’t exactly closed (doesnt have a door) but they have a large c&c pen (2×6) cage that they live in along with a play pen, and harnesses to go on walks. And i keep all my supplies in there so i guess it sorta is…. I also let them roam my room when i am there.

we let penelope roam the entire house except my room and the bathroom because we dont want her in the bathtub and my room is carpeted. we will sometimes let her roam for the entire day… she doesnt chew furniture thank god. i have read that some bunnies go to town chomping on wires and wood. heh.

My Cupcake has a pen in the living room, but basically runs free in there. Its her space and she doesnt really care to venture any further than that. Dizzie has a spot in my scrapbooking room that I let her run around in during the day. She goes in her cage at night because she seems to forget about her litter box at night. She gets to run in the dining room and hallway when I get home from work too. She loves it and binkies all over! Cupcake loves to run in our basement as it is completely carpeted

nope zoo-zoo shares a room with me. which is just fine because she sleeps with me and if she doesn’t she throws a fit. she has her own cage, a little bed next to her toy box with all her toys and she has found some hiding spots on my closet and under the bed aslong as you can co-exsist together there is really no need for the bunny to have their own room. Don’t want them becoming anti-social or anything

Hi Menmybuns and congrats on the new bunnies!

You’re welcome to start a new topic for your question. That way more members will see it and offer suggestions.

Tunnels are always a good addition. And some small tables perhaps? Rabbits like to have higher points to get up to, investigate what’s going on. And with tables, they can sit underneath also.

I live inbetween two places.  At the one palce my bedroom is the bunny room and at the other place the living room(his area where his cage is)… my bunny is always free roaming.  He’s almost 5 months and free roaming has worked out well for me… he’s so well behaved and never gets into mischief. I always keep a close eye and have bunny proofed both houses.

I can’t since he is only 7week old and still pee and poo everywhere he goes…not to mention my house is a new home that was just finished a few month a go so I don’t want him to ruin the floor… However, I do let him out around the house running around a bit each day.. just that I have to keep cleaning his pees and pick up his poos… :/

I can’t let her loose because I have a small house and lots of things that have nowhere to go (=clutter!) but I picked up the kitchen the day before Mako came home and she’s been so good (picked up litter training in a day, would you believe it?) that last night I let her have the run of it while I slept and she still did just fine It’s pretty small (but bigger than a hutch or cage!) so both litterboxes are within easy reach. Now I just have to get a proper gate, right now she just has cardboard… not gonna last long!

I am halfway through building an enclosure for him, it will be 6 feet by 2 feet each floor (2 floors) with a ramp and a landing. the second floor is a roof deck. It was really hard to find pretty bunny enclosures, so I excited about this and hoping to be finished in the next few weeks. I feel bad that he is in such a small space. We keep him in the cage during the day because I am worried about him getting into something and getting hurt, but he is let out whenever someone is home which is morning and nights.

He doesn’t seem interested in tearing up the blankets when he hops up on my bed (thank goodness) and has been very good about keeping his “business” in his litter tray. =)

I laid it over a shower curtain, so I could spot clean any areas and it not be able to soak into the actual floor. It’s flat piling, so easy to scrub with a sponge and kinda tough, I think even a digger would have trouble digging a hole in it. Also because it virtually has no piling, it dries fast.

Ellis joined our family back in May. We originally built a 3ft by 4ft cage with wire shelving, going two sections high, about 28 inches. Within a couple of months, he mastered fence-jumping. Since we’re all on different home/sleep schedules, this wasn’t working. My daughter and her boyfriend made a larger cage (4ft x 6ft) for him using 4ft high gardening fence and cable channels/covers. We use an indoor/outdoor carpet mat – like businesses have at their entrances in the winter – for the base, since we have hardwood floors. Carabiner clips secure one section as a gate/door. In his space, he has a litter box, empty wine case, water bowl, pellet bowl, carpet and flannel remnants and an unfinished wooden shoe rack (2 levels). We use a wire “in-box” from an office supply shop, zip-tied to the cage wall for his hay (next to the litter box).

When we’re home, we keep the gate open and Ellis has bunny-proofed access to the front two rooms of the house. He won’[t go up more than one or two stairs, so he’s limited himself to the first floor so far. He seems to split his time between sleeping under the livingroom table and hanging out in his space.

So, not really a “bunny room”, but not full run of the house. Just like the rest of us, he has his own space, which we try to respect as much as we can.

Ellis seems to spend a lot of his awake time nesting, arranging his toys, boxes, blankets, towels, etc, “just so”. He seems to be moving his wine-box den and shoe rack to follow the winter sun, just a few inches every couple of days, but about 60degrees from where we set it originally.

Is he practicing his own version of “bun shui”?  Rearranging things because he’s bored? Trying t attract a mate (even though he’s been neutered for almost a year)?

How much will a thorough cleaning – vacuuming, washing the flannels and towels, putting in new boxes and cardboard for him – mess with his head? He seems happy, and the vet says he’s healthy (minor digestive issue today, but she told us what to do and not to worry), so I don’t want to interfere with something that’s going well.

On the other hand, his favorites seem to be getting a bit shabby and I’d like for him to have “nice things”.

(Ellis is our first pet ever, although my husband and I both had dogs when we were kid. He’s a bachelor rabbit (so far) since we don’t have the guts to try to take care of two yet.)

Thanks for any help for this newbie bun-mom.

Buns LOVE to redecorate! They love exploring, so switching out toys and cardboard boxes stimulates their minds. The only thing I will warn you about, from my own experience, is once he’s picked his spot to use the litter pan… that’s pretty much where he’s gonna go. So keep that in mind when you’re cleaning and moving stuff around. If you find you want to relocate the litter box (like if it is not in a good location such as the middle of the floor…) you will need to move it very slowly over a long period of time. They don’t use the box, they use the spot.

I made the mistake of moving the litter box to where it wasn’t in the way… I think maybe he counts the amount of hops or something to get to his potty spot. Hits the mark every time! Over the last 4 months, I’ve been S-L-O-W-L-Y moving his box, 1 inch at a time, towards the location I want. He was perfect with his litter box habits… but since I’ve been moving it, he now leaves stray poo balls where the box used to be, just outside the box. He does use the box the majority of the time, but not all the time like before I started moving it.

Bumpy spends a great deal of time throwing things around and flipping his boxes. I seriously think he just enjoys showing off how strong he is! LOL

More input on Ellis. I did a thorough cleaning of his cage tonight, including shaking out his blankets, sweeping up loose hay and fur, etc. One wall of his cage is against an outside wall, and it’s the corner he likes to sleep in. Hoping he’s not too cold there, I put his flannel blankets in the corner to give him something to nest in. He hopped over (from where he’d been happily chewing on some wood), glared at me, and proceeded to move the blankets and towels off of the carpet corner, giving me that “those don’t belong THERE, you silly person” look the whole time. Once the space was cleared back out, he went back to his other bunny business.

So I think his issue is more “bun shui” than showing off. Which seems to fit his personality so far.

He has his store bought cage by the window with a turned over whiteboard on top and some stairs so he can hop up on to the window sill. We also have an old bed on there he likes hiding under. Currently, he has three litterboxes. (He is litter trained, but there’s an issue with territory poops.) One is next to his store bought cage w/ his hay rack. He has 24 hour free range in what I call ‘The Bunny room.’

We’ve tried before and she goes in the girls room and hops up on their bed to play, she hops up on our bed to play, and will do this all night. we have tried twice to let her have he run of the house at night and she is just too active. Once we get her and Dio completely bonded then we will see again, but for now they sleep in their houses at night. My husband says the night I was in the hospital to have my appendix out, the week before we got Dio, Pepper slept on the bed with him all night the day after my surgery while I was healing up in the hospital. Lucky daddy!

Charlotte is a chewer, so there’s constant inspections to make sure all cords are up and out of the way. The both have tons of toys, but Charlotte like cords above anything I could buy for her.

Huge condo, boxes and tunnels, tables to see out windows. Right now they just are in the living room in X-pen for three and Addie has Sam’s kennel to try to keep her quiet. Ha. She’s doing short track Bunny 500s and binky in place instead.

Cats and bunnies get along fine, dogs are firm believers in leaving critters alone less you get sharp claws and teeth on your muzzle. So once they prove they stay reliable on litter box use, probably just shut them in their room at night or if one of us isn’t home.

My apt has a closet between the ex office (all my stuff is in the kitchen now) and my room, and it’s literally a walk through closet. So I let her have the house (minus the laundry room, too dusty, and dangerous, and the kitchen) and at night I put her in her room, and open the closet so she can come and go depending on mood / temperature.

Moving for next year so hopefully will have a bigger room or they will be in the living room as my house mate is getting 2 guinea pigs over summer (I hope they get on and we can let them out together). When I am at my parents we have an old wendy house that was repurposed as a dog kennel so has a run on it with a flap, the dog doesn’t like it so my girls have taken it over! they love it. The more adventurous of the two can run around outside and the quiter can sit inside on her ledge and watch the world through the window…

But he stays in his cage at night, mainly because if I don’t he will jump on my bed and demand attention!

Basil just got neutered a couple weeks ago so he hasn’t moved into my room yet since he and Pascal aren’t bonded. He does get to run around our living room with CLOSE supervision since he isn’t afraid of hardwood and goes anywhere and everywhere you don’t want him to!

Soon I will be rooming with two boy buns instead of just one, hopefully Basil has good litterbox habits like Pascal >.<

For the floor, half is 10ml plastic, covered with puppy pee pads, then vetrinary fleece bedding. On Guin’s half, the area next the the fence is towl instead of fleece, because she seemed to want to pee on the fleece at the fence. So now that it is towel, she only pees in her litter box. The other half of each side, is plain carpet. I recently removed the x-pens, and brought in NIC cubes. I made a NIC separating fence, and a 2-story hideout. On Lancelot’s side, his hideout has fleece bedding on the second level, while Guins has towel and a soft dog mat. She tends to like to pee on the fleece when it is at a perimiter. But she doesn’t pee on the fleece in the middle of her space. They each have a large box with holes cut in so they can hop in and out, and shred the cardboard. I use brown paper packaging inside the boxes for something they can dig and tear at. I give Guin 2 of everything, coz the cat likes to use her accommodation. They have 8inch corrugated pipe to crawl thru, Guin has a cat cube to hide in, and Lancelot’s double story is slightly larger than Guins, with a 3rd level for hay storage. Lancelot has a cat bed in the closet. I give them maple branches to chew on, corn stalks, lava rocks, and apple sticks. Lancelot only chews on the softer cardboard. Probably due to his prior teeth pain.Once they are bonded, I’ll remove the dividing fence, leave the two separate double-story structures, and let them out in the rest of the house while the dogs are put away.

I think they are 7 gallon volume. Anything smaller than that, and Guin will use the floor space next to it. Looking at her size, the vet was surprised she only weighs 7lbs. She is physically quite large. Everyone expects her to weigh 10lbs.

They had munched power chords, garden hoses, you name it. Indoors, they do better. I still give them maple branches to chew, lots of hay, cardboard, and other petstore-rabbit chew toys, and they have left the molding and carpet alone. And the furniture. Well I first sprayed bitter apple on all the 90-degree angles of wood furniture, and put away the electrical chords. They have really been super good.

Both of mine just stay in the living room…Toby is out all the time. He’s not a big chewer (not on furniture and other things), and he doesn’t venture off of his rug much, so he’s totally free-range. He’s got a corner of the living room to keep all of his toys and his bed and such and he hangs out there, or on the couch. KitKat has the opposite corner, but she has to be in her pen when we are gone. She’s new to the house and she’s much more curious than Toby is, so I’m pretty sure she’d eat everything if we weren’t paying attention. Her pen gets opened up every afternoon as soon as we get home though, and she’s free-roam all night until bedtime…so she has a good 5-6 hours out every day with more on weekends.

I love having them hang out in the living room with us all the time <3

He has amazing littler habits, so it works out fine, but he also destryed my fan cord one day when he got past the bunny-proofing It’s much better now! He’s a silly bun thought, he will NOT leave the rug or his blanket and walk on the wood floor, unless he’s going under the bed.

Sometimes we let her out at night too, when she’s too fast to be caught (she hates going to bed!). I’m hoping to give her a bigger cage just because her’s is your average pet store cage. She never spends time in it though during the day. And as to bunny proofing… well, she chews the baseboards, the leather couch, the antique coffee table, the computer cables, everything. I’m shocked my parents haven’t killed her yet (just kidding, my father adores her!)

We have a 2 bedroom, but there is an “extra” room in between the living room and second bedroom, where Pep and Jojo have two x-pens put together. We’re developing a plan for how to bunny-proof the whole room for them, though. In our lease they have to stay penned, so we’re thinking of laying down 2x4s along the baseboards, then using x-pens to go all around the room (so they are still technically penned, and can’t get at the woodwork to chew it).

The room is now referred to as “the bunny room” even when we’re not around.

It’s our sunroom… I cordoned it off with some high fencing and she loves it. Her cage is still in there for now, but that’s huge too and takes up a ton of room so I’d like to get her used to having her den, litter box and food/water dishes outside of it for now. Not sure if she’s going to appreciate that though, lol. We have a lot of birthdays/anniversaries coming up where family will be coming over, and I want her to still have her cage so she feels like she can jump in there and hide when people (and noise) come.

I adopted a 15mo old bun 1mo ago from humaine society so he was neutered.. At first he shared a room with my daughter but she has since moved out so he has a whole room to him self.. I sometimes cage him at night in a large dog kennel where his food..water and litter box are located.. he is fully litter trained and surprisingly hasn’t destroyed the room.. Few scratches in corners but I have put tall cardboard in the corners to detour that behavior.. He has TONS of toys hay treats and cardboard hide outs.. I spend time with him in the AM hours.. peek in on him threw out the day and always spend time with him in evening.. We have a dog so bun has not ventured out of room..plus he wont let me pick him up so really for the best till he gets more use to me.. Things have been going very well BUT the one question I do have is he ok spending so much time in the room alone?? I do have a 44inch wood and wire dog gate which I put up so the door can be open.. I guess im just looking for reassurance that this is a proper living space for Leo my bun??!! thanks for any feed back!!

Sounds good to me. We can’t all be stay-at-home-bunny-moms. My buns share the spare bedroom. I let one pair have access to the back half of the house 24/7. The other pair are too destructive – they stay in half of the spare room. I visit/feed them in the mornings before work, and spend time with them in the evenings as I feed/clean in their areas. I also have birds in the room, so I’m in there frequently throughout the evening. During the day, the bunies sleep. I try to malke te most of my mornings and evenings with them, while they are awake and playful. Since one pair is regularly in my bedroom, they get plenty of petting. I spend a few hours a day altogether with them. Spending time with bunnies isn’t a solid time frame – it’s the 5 or so minutes at a time scattered throughout the day that add up. I have 2 pairs, so they each have a pal, and they are never lonely. It is possible that Leo might get lonely during the evenings when he is awake and playful, and you are in bed. But with some time, you’ll be able to tell by his behavior, if he is happy. Before I had pairs, I had single buns. I could tell if they were happy or not. The living space sounds great. More than many people could arrange. For my pair who have access to the back half of the house – the only bunny proofing I need to do is to keep electric cords out of their way. That is the only thing they might destroy. They are really very well behaved.

I currently have them both in two separate xpen-style enclosures on large floor rugs.

I have a spare room and it is devided in half. At the moment I have a linoleum lining on the half that Morgana and Avalon have. They are super destructive so I don’t let them out of the room. They are also not easy to catch. I have to corner them and scoop them into a travel cage. It has taken me years to get them to let me pet them. But I still can’t pick up Morgana without a travel cage. Guin and Lancelot have the other half of the room, and they also have free acess to the hallway, my bedroom, and the guest room. You remind me Lil Leo, it’s time to trim the nails of my four…. my least favorite task in the world…

My older guy David has arthritis and just stays in a cage, but my girl Sundae has a big cage attached to a metal pen thats practically the size of the room.

I made my living room into Odette’s space. I want her near me as we are bonding. I didn’t really know how she would be most comfortable, so I bought a large dog kennel, a smaller Kaytee cage, and baby gates for the three door openings. She likes to jump in and out of the crates, but she sleeps in my bookcase. I removed the books from the bottom row (it’s secured) and put a shirt down for her. She chose that space. I also have a wooden semi-circle tunnel that she sleeps under sometimes.

Odette came to me litter trained, so that made it easy to allow her to free roam.

I would allow her to move freely about the open part of the house, but she has trouble with hardwoods and slips. So far there’s not been a problem with chewing the carpet. Odette chews her toys and applewood sticks.

This is day five since I brought her home and she went from a little shy to following me around overnight. My last bunny did that too, so I kinda suspected Odette would come around. I just thought it would take longer.

I might make my guest bedroom into a bunny room once she is completely comfortable in her new home here.

I have a dog so my bun stays in his room.. I often wish he could roam more of the house makes me sad at times but I go in there very often and hang with him.. sometimes I just feel bad like he is alone a lot but I have to be positive!! Lol.. he does have a pretty great life and who knows where he would be if I didn’t adopt him!!

I put Odette in her crate while I’m at work. I meant she is out while I’m home. My previous bunny lived eight years and her set up was much like your bun’s and she was the happiest girl in the world. I think bunnies like a little time alone, much like us!

I just hope once I put him back in his room he won’t throw a tantrum.. I plan on doing that this week coming up since I will have it off!! I’m excited for him.. he also has to visit vet to get nails trimmed.. he will not be excited for that..

Mostly, she has staked out an area by the bookcase where she stays when she’s not playing.

From about 8am until about midnight we open the gate to the ex-pen and give Sage the freedom of the room…to make it more interesting we created tunnels that run under the bed, we put fleece blankets in cubby’s and on low shelves around the room so she can jump up and down and race through the tunnels under the bed…in one end out the other…turn around and do it again. lol

First post and I just wanted to say I have found so much great information on this forum since we adopted Twinkie. I just finished his room. (It’s really my daughter’s room but it has turned into his room and he has allowed her to sleep up in the loft.) The cage was meant as an outdoor cage and I didn’t intend to put a “yard” on it at first but it just seemed so small. The project just grew and grew and the next thing I knew, he lived in the hundred acre woods.  He only sleeps there at night and if we have to go out, otherwise he has most of the house to play all day. He gets a little bit of pellets on his hay at bedtime so when I open the hallway gate and say “night night” he races his little bunny self down the hall and puts himself to bed.

Right now they are living in my room with a two story xpen and right now my brothers guinea pig is living there too. I let them run around my room every day for 5-6 hours.

Yes, Cashew has his own bedroom It has a full-sized IKEA bed, that frankly looks a lot like a big version of those cute beds everyone gets for their bunnies.  The floor is covered with flatwoven rugs, for warmth and easy cleaning.  Every few days I take the rugs and shake them out in the hallway, and then sweep that all up.  In the corner he has foam mats and his litter box.  He has a few hidey holes — one made out of an XBox box, with a wood tunnel inside, and another that’s a wood tunnel wrapped in a soft, cotton flatwoven rug.

I was initially planning to have his xpen set up, as it had been in our old place, but when we moved him, we did it all at once, and initially I didn’t set up the xpen because I didn’t want to distress him.  Eventually it became clear, he’s so well-behaved, and his room is completely bunny-proofed, so the xpen stayed down.

My office is across the hall, but right now he likes to stay in his room.  I’m thinking we should build him some kind of run that he might enjoy adventuring in, to encourage him to explore the rest of the bunnyproofed areas.

Right now his favorite places are under the bed, on the bed, and back under the bed, again

On the left side there is a built in corner desk in the wall which I will use for my revision and the right side of the room will be the rabbits area. I’ve designed a little diagram for anyone who would like to see/understand my idea as I’m not too great at explaining haha. Here it is:

So far I’ve only gone as far as cleaning out the entire room as it was a mess. Its currently empty and clean, just need to implement the bunny things!

This is Guinivere and Lancelot’s half. The picture shows 2/3 of their half. I built the bunny house and ramp. There is non-skid on the second level, and 3 roof attic compartments to store bunny supplies. There is a sand box at the bottom left. Guin uses the second floor. She has a litter box there, and they both use the litter boxes on ground level. They have a small fleece that Lancelot loves. I only give them a small fleece because Guin pees on it. The floor is covered in puppy pee pads, then human bed pads, then puppy pee pads. This is because 0Lancelot never regained his bladder control since getting sick with E.C. Every day I change the 3 or 4 most peed on pads, and every weekend I change all the top layer of pee pads. You can see their red salad plate, a few throw-toys, a maple branch to chew on, and their pellet box on the ground level of the bunny house. The water bowl is close to my feet as I take the picture.

The bottom has a flap for Guina nd Lancelot. Since he has no bladder control, I can’t let him run around the house. He also hasn’t shown interest in going through the flap since his E.C. So I covered it with a NIC cube that I can lift and hook in the open position should he regian his bladder control. It also keeps the cat out… there are birds in the bunny room…

My parents have been staying with us since they fell on hard times, but should be moving out in the next month or two–giving us our spare room back! It’s going to be bunny paradise–a cat and toddler free zone where the bun will rule! And mommy and daddy will spend lots of time there with bun too, because we intend to keep our hobby stuffs in there (safely stored of course).

It originally started out as a small pen my dad and I built, which was gradually upgraded as we got new inspiration and as the buns grew. At one point we ran out of wood for upgrading and the buns were so big that we let them run in the room during the day and put them back at night. Then we took Twix back to his owner, leaving us with one bunny. I wanted to spoil Jack so I (after making sure his litter training habits were perfect) allowed him to free roam all the time, but I kept the pen in case he wanted to use it more. Evetually I took it apart which gave him more running room. Since his room was the old exercise room, we had some equipment in there, so it was a bit crowded. However we recently took all of that out and put it in another room, giving him his own room. We also leave the door open and have set up an X-pen that reaches out into the living room so he can chill with us.

But if your bunny just keeps thumping you best get out of bed and check your house out.

But now that they are indoors, they do prefer it. On occasion, about a year ago, when I was rearranging their bunny room, I had them outside for a few hours. They weren’t super exited about it. They like the temperature of the house better than being outdoors. The 4th bunny has always been an indoor bun, and he doesn’t like going outside. When I adopted him, the shelter suggested he might like to spend an hour or so on a quiet lawn. He didn’t. Wouldn’t poop/pee outside, wouldn’t hop, didn’t like how the grass felt, just didn’t like it. It wasn’t the soft snuggly blanket/fleece setup that he was used to. If you really want your bun to spend time outside – create an option for him to be able to rest on some blankets, or something familiar from his indoor room.

Well, she takes up 3/4 of the room, but she is litter box trained and has free range all day every day. I would consider that a bunny room. I mean, bunny toys, tubes, treats, and blankets are all over the place (by that I mean organized in their rightful spot).
