Hello! My bunny has this strange habit of licking the carpet right by my back door. He is not causing any damage at all, but I am concerned it might be harmful for him? Does anyone have experience with this and know how to stop it? Is it even harmful?

If he's not ingesting the fibers, he should be ok. However, to discourage him from tearing it up (which would be very bad), I suggest spray the area with something that bunnies tend to hate. I used regular yellow Dial soap on carpeted areas Cinnabun loved to attack. Works quite well. You could also by "no bite" solution which should be available at your local pet store. You could also take attention away from that area by giving your bun a small stuffed animal to lick/love but make sure you monitor him very closely at first with the stuffed toy in case he decides to tear him apart and eat him, which would be VERY bad.

Is it only in that one spot? My bunny Lulu loves tho lick the floor anywhere and anytime! I'm not sure why. She tends to do it most when I am petting her.

Bunjamin and Sweets both groom the carpet (and bean bag). They usually do it when they've recently received grooms. Have you tried petting him when he's doing it to see what would happen?

And I concur, make sure it doesn't lead to ripping. Bunjamin will trick me sometimes and start off licking then get into pulling.

Rex LOVES to lick the carpet!  He usually does it under my desk or beside my closet, not totally sure why he enjoys it but he isn't ripping up the carpet so I usually let him. It probably has something to do with grooming since he almost always does it after he gives himself a nice groom! 

As long as your bun isn't tearing up the carpet or ingesting anything harmful (as CinnibunMom said) I don't see why it would a bad thing. You could redirect his attention with some potted grass or toys if it seems to be harmful to his health or your carpet. 

Thank you for the replies! He has no interest at all in tearing the carpet he only wants to lick it in that area. In one area he digs at the carpet to try and get behind my couch but I have dealt with that situation. I think he enjoys licking it because it is cold on his tongue...its right by the back door and the carpet feels cold. Just wanted others opinions...I do not think its harmful for him! Thanks!

My bun licks the carpets, the sofa and our clothes, whilst we're wearing them, especially fluffy dressing gowns lol

Longhairmike - haha we make inappriate jokes all the time about Lola's incessant carpet licking.

Lola licks the carpet and is very partial to grooming the microfiber couch AND *awkwardly* the zipper of my boyfriend's cargo pants.   but only his cargo pants. maybe i'll catch her in the act tonight and post an awkward bunny photo. on second thought, my boyfriend would probably leave me.... 

ETA - she also likes to lick the sliding glass door lately - i think it has to do with the cold thing too.  gosh, buns are so weird.
