This morning my buns are very active, about half an hour ago I let them out of their enclosure, they started chasing each other, darting around the picnic table in circles and tearing at each other's fur. How can I tell if they're playing or fighting? They seem to get along with each other usually, but now there are bits of fluffy fur floating everywhere.

are they bonded?
if not thats your problem

How old? Are they fixed? Do they live together full time?

Chasing and pulling fur isn't a play behavior. Some bonded pairs will continue to do it long after being fully bonded, but the one getting his fur pulled doesn't enjoy it (my pair do this).

If no blood was drawn it sounds more like a scuffle than a fight, but it can escalate quickly. If you're not around to supervise, I would think about separating them.

They're 2 and 2.5 years old, both males and desexed. They've always been together as they're actually dad & son, I've only had them for a week so I have no idea if they did this often. I can't see any blood, just flying fur, and they seem to make up to each other quite fast afterwards.

They may be adjusting their relationship in a new place. Keep an eye on them to be sure it does not go into a full blown fight, but hopefully they will settle in to their new home within a couple weeks. This is a big time of change for them. Congrats on your new buns!

I agree with Brandy that they could just be settling in.

My two have been bonded for two years now and Hannah still chases Otto and pulls fur out of his bum occasionally. In the early stages of their bond Otto started a scuffle by fighting back a bit, but now he's just learned to hide from her until she gives up. It could be something similar with your pair and this is just their normal behavior together. I'd just keep an eye on them, but if they've been together that long they will hopefully work it out.

Thanks for the replies guys! I've been observing them for the last few days and they seem to be getting along fine
One still chases the other sometimes, but in less than 5 minutes they're grooming each other ^^
Today marks the day that I've had them for 2 weeks!
