We have had our female bunny for 1 year. She was purchased at a fair as "senior". I believe they said she was 3-4 yrs old, but the owner wasnt present, and we dont even know if she has been spayed or not.

She recently started humping my leg and nipping it. Otherwise she doesnt bite. I am thinking maybe I should take her to the vet and have her spayed. I believe they can check if she has a scar. Is there a way for me to tell? Is it a good idea to have her spayed. I dont want to put her through pain and distress if it is not necessary.

It is definitely a good thing to do for your girl. There is a ridiculously high chance of uterine cancer in unspayed female bunnies, 80-85% after 4 years of age, so it really is in her best interest. Cancer is definitely not fun

Spaying is highly necessary if you have a female rabbit. That was top priority when I got my Chacha bun. I did not want her to pass of reproductive cancer. Your bunny will be less hormonal, humpy, and a better bunny in general. As MB stated, it gets rid of the chances of reproductive cancer, which can harm a bunny

It would be very difficult to tell at this point is she has been spayed - I've taken rabbits in from shelters who were spayed when they opened them up and that was the only way they could really tell unless it was very recent. So if they do open her up and she is already spayed, it's not really a huge deal and you will know.

You certainly want to do bloodwork prior to the procedure at her age though.
