Our “mommy” Snowflake, had her litter on June 24. A wonderful little group of 5. 3 are nice and plump, and are in a nest in one area of the cage.  The other 2, are much smaller, “runts”, if you will, and are off in a nest by themselves, in a different area of the cage.  Is this okay? Do I need to start hand feeding them?  Help!  Thanks.

Welcome!  Now you’re entered into the drawing twice.

If they are on their own and thin, they are at risk.  You first need to make sure they are warm, and talk to a vet regarding those two.  They may be dehydrated and will need medical care to get them back on track.

Here is a link from the House Rabbit Society that may help you out until you can get them to a vet.

Let us know how it goes!  I’ll be keeping my fingers crossed!

HI there.  Yes, it has been a while…  Snowflake had her babies on June 24, 2006.  She was a GREAT mom, and did everything like bookwork.    Watching the babies grow from little bean sprouts, into fluffy, snuggly pets was a wonderful experience.  Although, I wouldn’t encourage anyone breeding their pet buns.

In December, I had to part with Snowflake and 3 of the 5 babies we kept.  We moved from WA state to New York state.  Of course, since being here, we have adopted more buns.    I have posted about them under health and care.  Particularly, our Hercules.

All of my buns back in WA went to great homes, mostly with friends of mine I have known for years, and I am able to get updates regularly on how they are doing.

                Thanks for your inquiry.

Hi lilmizzsnickerz, I just wanted to give you a heads up that it’s okay to touch them if the mother knows your scent, and some aren’t even that particular.  I know alot of people believe what you read, and I have also read in some places that it’s not good to touch the babies. (I think many people get this from what people say about wild babies)

But as long as the mother is familiar with the scent of everyone then it is okay.   I have personally spoken with rabbit experts about this.  (rabbit rescues, breeders, vets)

Doesn’t mean though that anyone should play with them of course, but if you need to get them to a better position or change something then it’s okay.

I am pretty ignorant about babies, but I do know that at The Rabbit Haven we handle the babies as soon as we can to get them used to people and make them more adoptable.  The moms do not reject the babies if they smell like people.
