The best way to find the best rabbit for you is to go to a rabbit rescue or humane society where you can meet the rabbits. Then you can pick out one with a personality you like.

*EDIT: I say this because baby rabbits typically change taste and preferences (I know from first hand experience). Whereas an adult has a pretty well developed personality. And typically rescues know the personality of their rabbits and can help you find a compatible rabbit.

French lops are the largest lops I believe usually over 10 lbs and dwarfs are typically under 3 so there is a big difference in size. Also I believe all rabbits can make good pets. Just takes understanding of how they preferred to be treated. (For example, picking up is usually disliked by rabbits so you not picking them up can help them feel more comfortable around you).

And sometimes if a rabbit has had a rough start to their life with a mistreating human, they might need a little extra understanding for them to come out of their shell and trust humans.

I agree with FrankieFlash – don’t base getting a rabbit on a particular breed. Go to a humane society or rabbit rescue and be very open minded and spend time with each rabbit – base your choice on the individual rabbit not the breed.

Care guidelines are more about the rabbit’s age and size rather than breed – although some are more prone to certain health conditions than others.

I have a netherland dwarf – and she is super loving and gives me tons of kisses and loves to play… but she is a HUGE brat.

Like the others said, the personality can’t really be found out by the breed of the rabbit, especially if you get a baby. I have heard that you have to be more careful with lops ears because they can’t clean them as well so it’s easier to get infections? I’ve never owned (been owned) by one so I don’t know if this is true or not but that’s why I decided to pick one with perky ears.

I did get a baby from the pet store – she was NOT healthy as a baby. I hated supporting the breeder that sends them to the store, but the reason that I chose her was because the store was going to put her down shortly because they didn’t want to pay the vet bills. That’s another reason I prefer rescues – I’m sure there’s one in a city near you if you look hard enough. They’re not as easy to find as pet stores but are well worth it. They take much better care of the rabbits than pet stores do, and are usually more honest about the animals past and can offer A LOT more information than a pet store can. The information that the pet store tried feeding me was mostly wrong (i.e. this cage is big enough, use these shavings for her bedding, she doesn’t need hay ALL the time, etc.).

Having experienced the cons of getting a rabbit from a pet store – my next will 100% be from a shelter.

Would you mind if I asked what city/state you’re located in? I wouldn’t mind trying to find a nearby shelter for you to check out

You can also check with your nearest city Animal Control center run by the gov’t. so would be on your local gov’t. website to find a shelter that probably has some rabbits to rescue. If you go to Petfinder.com, you can see listings of available rabbits near you by inputting your zip code. This will tell you about shelters in your area you might not have known existed.

Another advantage to an adoption from a shelter is if you get a bunny 6 months old or more, they will have already spayed or neutered the bunny. It’s very important to have done, and it’s an expense to plan for. This way, you will save yourself a lot of money, and know that your new bunny has already been seen by a vet so has a medical history.

It’s my experience that you plan on a certain kind of bunny (I wanted another mini rex), and then you see bunnies and one grabs your heart and you’re a gonner. At least at a shelter, you can learn their personality from the people there, which is a better criteria. (Laid back vs. high strung but silly to watch, etc.)

The best place for starter info. is right here on BB using the Home page or the Menu above under Bunny Info. There you can read up on habitat, food, age-related expectations, cost, etc.

P.S. Many of us also had good intentions about rescuing a bunny, then a cutie in a pet shop batted her eyes and we went home with her instead. I say this so you won’t feel badly if that happens to you, and will still come here to show us your newest family member. Like Sarita, I will definitely adopt my next bunny.

Great advice here! All breeds can make great pets. Rabbits aren’t bred for personality, the way dogs are, so there really aren’t a lot of specific behavior traits in different breeds – you can have nice and not-as-nice buns of any breed. French lops are quite large, so if you’re interested in them make sure you have enough space to house one.

I second the rescue option! I’m sure there are rescues or local shelters that have bunnies available. Check on Petfinder in your location.
