So most of you know I have 2 foster rabbits. When I was just out visiting them I heard this noise. I look in on them and the gray one was making this weird snorting/snuffling noise and ever time it would shake his head like it was hard for him to breath! He eventually stop and I came rushing inside to ask the shelter if I should take them in, but sometimes they don’t answer back for a few days. I was thinking I should take them both in to have a health check up and to check out his snuffling. I really don’t want Mocha and Lulu to catch anything! Could have this been some sort of hormonal noise? It really sounded like a stuffed up nose! Also I have never been to the vet since we moved. I have one picked out but I sure hope they are good!

I don’t think Lola and Mocha will catch anything since they have no direct contact. It would be a good idea however to have them checked out.

He was also digging in the dirt before that so he may have had dust in it. It just sounded differently then Mocha and Lulu’s sneezes. I want to see if that is something the shelter pays for or not because otherwise that would be pretty expensive. Not sure I have them money. Although I don’t think they would either.

I would definitely contact the shelter and ask them what they want you to do.

A health checkup sounds like a great idea for both of them, especially if the shelter might help you with the costs. Did you notice any discharge around the bun’s nose?

Peppypoo: nope. No discharge. I think he just got into some dust. I will definitely keep an eye on him and if it happens again and he hasn’t been digging then I will see if I can take him in. The shelter said they will not be able to pay for any vet bills until he gets to the foster home ( I am not an official foster home) and I can’t pay $40 for each of them to have a check up if their not sick because the shelter will do that when they get their.

Oh, no — I am confused. So the shelter will not take responsibility for them until they are in an “official foster” — so if someone else became the official foster, they would cover it? So what makes you not an official foster and then how do you become an official foster?

Just be sure to wash your hands between handling your bunnies and the the fosters (as well as between handling their stuff)

BB: Idk… I think it is because I live to far away. We live about 3 hours away. I think they must have a vet they go to that gives them a discount or something. I think I may end up taking them in if I will be housing them for awhile because I have a fear I sexed them wrong and one is really a girl (although if that was the case one would have been pregnant before I even got them.

Did you sign a foster agreement with them? Do they have the two bunnies on their site as up for adoption through them? Or if someone wanted to adopt them, would they need to go through the shelter in order to sign paperwork and adopt? Basically how are these bunnies associated with the rescue? Just trying to get an idea of how they are involved and what their responsibility would be.

All their rabbits are posted on Petfinders. The two bunnies I have are not on petfinders yet. I don’t know how the adoptions are made. No, I did not sign a foster agreement. I am trying to surrender them to the shelter because I am not in the position where I can keep them until they are adopted.

I would probably work towards getting them into the rescue’s possession then. They are going to need to be neutered soon, and the longer you have them, the longer they are not being listed for adoption, and the older they are getting. Some people do look specifically for rabbits that are young (under a year) so it’s important for them to be listed ASAP. I was under the impression that they were currently “for adoption”, but at this point, they’re just in limbo.

Beka: They can’t go to the shelter. They don’t have room and wont take them because they have a huge waiting list and I don’t know what position they are in on the list. They will take them and put them up for adoption ASAP though. They would have taken them to the shelter if they had room.

Okay – I FINALLY got this whole thing figured out – sorry it took me so long. I had to go back through some of your past posts and get caught up. So after looking at the situation, because they came from the camp you were at, and you are not officially fostering them yet (on waiting list), would the people who bought the bunnies for camp, be willing to help you with any vet costs if needed? (How are the bunnies doing right now anyway?). I mean, I know the camp was more than pleased to have you take responsibility for them, but it is a bit unfair for them to do the easy part (obtain them) and then have no way to make sure they are taken care of long-term. What would they have done with them if you hadn’t taken them, and the shelter is full? So, you are making sure that the day to day care is covered, until they find a home, but you (and they) are now definitely in the predicament if they are sick.

Can the shelter give you any idea of when they would be able to accept these bunnies? I know you said you are on the waiting list, but did they give you any estimated time line? I know earlier you had posted about trying to make a decision about keeping them or taking them to the shelter (was it a different shelter, or does it look like you are getting closer on the waiting list?) And is the waiting list for them to take the bunnies in and house them at the shelter, or for you to foster for them? Or both? IF it is only to take them into their possession, then I completely change my answer that I had in that other post, I say that you need to let the shelter handle it as their vet care will be taken care of if something happens. It also may be easier for them to adopt them if they are there since you said you were quite a long distance from them. Though the confined space of a shelter is not ideal, they could be more likely to get a forever home and that would be best in the long-run.

Sorry so many questions, just trying to get down to figuring out how to help solve this problem.

Ok so I think I should start from the beginning and tell the whole story from beginning to end. This may be a long post

My sister works for the same summer camp I go to. It is located in UP Michigan. At the beginning of the summer she called me and told me they had gotten 2 baby bunnies for the petting zoo. I was disappointed and I asked her what they were feeding them. She told me just hay and no pellets. When I came to camp I brought a 10lb bag of Oxbow alfalfa pellets. Within 4 weeks they had ran out of pellets and they were just on hay again. My mom had told me that I was not aloud to take these bunnies home and re-home them. I went back up to the UP to visit my sister at the camp (she was living there at that time.) My sister told me that the person didn’t know what to do with the bunnies so she just let them out of the cage to… you know…. When a different employee found out what she had done she told her that that was horrible and to put them back. She said if she could find the bunnies in the morning she would put them back in their cage. Luckily they had stayed in the petting zoo fence even though they could have easily escaped. When my Mom came to pick me up I told them what had happened and she reluctantly let them come home with us. She made it very clear that they can and never will be able to come in the house and that she should go to the shelter ASAP! I emailed a rabbit sanctuary that I know and trust. Since we have moved we live about 3 hours away. When they emailed me back they told me that they had been pushed back on the waiting list since they hadn’t hear from me in two weeks (I had emailed them earlier asking them if they would take them). Their sanctuary is run by foster parents. They don’t have a shelter “base” so if the don’t have enough fosters they don’t have room for more rabbits. They told me if I could not house them until they can pick them up then I can drop them off at my local shelter and they can stay their until they can pick them up. They have now put them on petfinders so they are out their if anyone is interested in them. I asked them if I could be an “Offical fosterer” so they could maybe get fixed and stuff but they may have a certain vet they use. I hope this clears things up! I didn’t realize they had put them on petfinders.

Thanks you. I do remember a little bit about the camp bunny issue. Frustrating. And you are just trying to help these bunnies. You are in a stickler situation not being an official foster and having them be your full responsibility when they get they sick.

So the Rescue is waiting for an “official foster” to become available. And they cannot make you an official foster because of how far away you are now? If the bunnies are on Pet finder now and will be adopted through the Rescue, how does that work then exactly (especially if you are not an Official Foster). Would you have to make the 6 hour round trip? I would contact the Rescue and ask them about these logistics if you are not sure.

I would also ask the Rabbit Rescue if they take bunnies bunnies from your local shelter first, before they take from surrenders. (Many times Rescues do this to save 11th hour bunnies). If that is the case then, then it might be better off in the long run for them to go to a shelter so that they can get the medical care they need and be given a chance for a permanent home sooner than later..

Does the local shelter near you have a foster program? You could surrender but then be willing to Foster for them if so.

BB: I don’t know about the surrendering thing. I will ask once they email me back about my other question about possibly becoming a foster mom. (I doubt I could because I live so far away.

I don’t think I can foster them until they find a home because my mom said they have to be gone this month. I am afraid if I give them to the shelter near me they wont give them to a good home. They barely ever have rabbits there and I would hate for them to end up in a bad place. I really trust the shelter I am going with. but who knows.
