My gf and I have a 1 year old Holland Lopp and are considering getting a female Lop or Rex as a companion.  Pretty much every place we have read about says that we should have both rabbits altered prior to introducing them and that the female needs about 2 weeks to fully heal after being spayed.  My question is how would this work if the female is younger than 6 months (the recommended age for spaying)?  Would we be ok introducing them and then having her spayed when she reaches 6 months and sperating them for two weeks or somehow keep them completely seperate until after she is spayed/heals?

You would want to wait until she is spayed. I would say wait AT LEAST 1 month after she is altered before introducing them.

If you can you should get a rescued rabbit that is already altered which would be better – if you have a nearby rescue then you can take him on bunny dates to see who he likes.

Kimberly it sounds like you made ears or tails of my post but just for clarification, in case others are confused, the rabbit we currently have is a 1 year old M neutered Holland Lop. We are considering adding a F Holland Lop or Rex. I think when we got the M he was only about 2 months old and as we are considering going with the same breeder (eespecially with a Lop) the F would most likely be in the same age range. This would leave about 4 months of having to keep the rabbits seperate.

A main concern with this is that they live in a 2 bedroom apartment and the M currently has access to all rooms except a walkin closet and the masterbedroom. He hates tile so he has only entered the kitchen once or twice. This means that he pretty much has free reign so making sure they get out and both are getting enough attention for months might be tough.

The shelter idea is good and I have brought that up with her but she really likes the idea of getting to raise them from a very young age, the fluffy puff ball syndrome and all.

I can definitely relate to the fluffy puff ball syndrome..but if you watch some rescue videos or look on petfinder you’ll see that there is soo many rabbits who just need someone to love so badly.  They’re just as cute and you’re giving a rabbit a good life that it so much deserves.  I have to bite my tongue..and typing fingers OFTEN because I see baby bunnies that I’d LOVE to have but I have to keep reminding myself of all those bunnies in rescues that need me!!!

shelters often have rabbits brought in who are pregnant and so they usually do have younger rabbits in, its always best to at least check with a shelter and see if they have any, if not they may be able to point you in the direction of someone who needs help with baby buns

I totally understand the fluffy puffball syndrome, however, a visit to a shelter will bring about ANOTHER syndrome which is the “look at that poor sweet bunny stuck in a tiny cage with no one to love and take care of her” syndrome, and I can tell you for a fact that syndrome also comes along with the “I feel so good about myself turning a poor lost rabbit’s life around” syndrome, which is an excellent feeling! I recommend just one visit to a shelter with your girlfriend and I will bet she’ll find a lonely bunny that she can’t leave without….so bring your bunny boy for some dates just in case Even if you don’t leave with a bunny, making connections with a local rescue is great for getting vet recommendations, connecting with other rabbit owners, and usually the shelters sell some nice rabbit products that you can buy to support the shelter and make your bunny very happy.

I fell victim to this just this past weekend. I love my new bunny boy just as much as the baby bunny boys I adopted off of Craigslist.

Well I talked to her about the idea and I guess I was wrong on what I thought she wanted.  Apparently she is open to the idea of adopting a rabbit.  This was even more true when I told her about bunny dates and such!

In light of this I do have a couple more questions.  I have put in several hours of research online so far and have come up with minimal results when it comes to the rabbits that we are looking for.  Our tastes are in either a Mini Rex or another Holland Lop.  It would need to be a female and already spayed.  Additionally the age range that we would like would be the 6months to 1.5 year range to match our current Holland.  White is also not an option because she is not fond of red eyed bunnies.

We are in the MInneapolis area of Minnesota and would like help finding foster agencies/shelters.

Well, you have to be pretty open when it comes to shelter rabbits and to finding a friend for your rabbit.  Also age should not matter and you should try to be open to that if you could.

Try not to limit yourself too much and base it on the rabbit’s personality and even more on what your rabbit wants.

Sarita, you brought something up in that comment that I had been wondering about…when we look into getting Tucker a friend we were thinking that we wanted one under like 3 years of age basically to make sure that if the rabbit was older that it didn’t have a much shorter life left then Tucker because I figured he’d be devastated then.  Is that really something that I should worry about though or do you think he’d be ok?  I ask because once I get him fixed (I’ll say that rather then neuter/spayed since the he/she is up in the air LOL) I’d like to just take him in and let HIM choose because really it’s going to be who he has to live with!! But I was wondering if I would be better of only having younger buns there or if any age would work out..

That is actually the very reason that we wanted to go with one in that age range.

I would say not to worry about age but about whether or not the buns get along. Odds are that no matter what you do, one of them will go before the other one does so somebun will be upset.

This was a big worry for me but when I saw how badly Dono wanted a girlfriend, I didn’t worry about the 5 year gap between them. Besides, Maryann is so tenacious, she’ll probably live longer than me just so she can binkie on my grave.
