I would not get a second rabbit. It sounds like you are a minor, and as such, any pet you get is your mother’s responsibility until you turn 18. We generally don’t recommend rabbits as pets for children under 18 years of age. They are expensive to care for, requiring daily hay and fresh veggies, as well as frequent litter box changes. They also need to be spayed or neutered for health and behavioral reasons.

You have a rabbit now, so I strongly, strongly suggest that you focus on that rabbit and provide the very best care you can, including making sure she is spayed. This is especially vital for female rabbits as they have an 85% risk of developing reproductive cancer by the time they are 4 years old. Spaying her will help her live a long, healthy life: 12+ years.

Your rabbit is not lonely during the day. Rabbits sleep most of the day and are active mornings and evenings. If you can provide some exercise time in the evenings when you are home, that is just exactly what she needs. Make sure she has a large indoor cage or pen (MINIMUM 2×4 feet, preferably 4×4 feet) and plenty of rabbit safe toys.

I am very concerned about your mother saying you can’t take your rabbit on holidays AND you can’t get a petsitter. If your rabbit is going to be alone for longer than 24-36 hours, you HAVE TO have someone come in and feed/water her. If no one is caring for her for an extended length of time, that is neglect and your rabbit will become sick and possibly die. This is a serious issue and something you need to address now. A rabbit is no different than a dog or cat, they have to be fed and watered daily.

Don’t get another rabbit, just love the one you have already. Rabbits are incredibly difficult to bond and by the way you write I imagine you’re quite young. If you are as young as I think you are then I doubt you would be able to deal with the stress and dedication required to bond two rabbits which means your mum would need to do it in order for it to happen safely. If your mum doesn’t want another rabbit or the issues that come with another rabbit then don’t get another one because at the end of the day she is probably paying for it and it’s her decision. I’d say if she has already told you no then it doesn’t matter how much convincing you try, it just won’t happen.

Look after Molly like you are and just focus on her and giving her all your love. Rabbits can bond to humans too so try and make her have a bond with you instead of another rabbit.

Sorry, I’m also with your mom on this one, and honestly it sounds like you give plenty of attention to your bun
There’s also the cost to think about, more money for spay/ neuter and vet bills, and additional pen until they are bonded, the possibility that they never bond and the space and time to keep them separate. The loss of litter habits when they are being introduced, due to territorial marking. More money for pellets and veggies and litter, it can really add up.
Also, if they don’t bond, you’ll have to keep them separate on vacations and at your grams house, which can really be a pain. Bonding 2 bunnies is rarely easy, you can’t just stick them together and hope for the best, and you have to be ready to deal with injuries that bunnies can and will cause ( and be able to pay the vet bills for).
Welcome to BB btw, I’d love to see pics and we all would love to help you provide the best life for your bun

I think 1 is a good, responsible decision it’s hard though, I know! I have to make myself stay off any pet ads or stores so I’m not won over by the cuteness.

It’s worth stating that single buns form very tight bonds with their humans. A single bun, because they don’t have a bonded rabbit mate (which is not necessary if their human is around for long periods of time when bunnies are most active), becomes bonded with their human. Like Beka stated, chances are..she’s not lonely. During the day when you are out and about, she’s sleeping/eating/resting. So it’s not boredom or loneliness, it’s normally bunny-ness. Sounds like you spend enough time with her and give her a good life, so boredom and loneliness is probably not a factor.

I don’t think single rabbits get as lonely as people think as long as they get enough time with their owners. My rabbit is a single bun ever since I got him a year and a few months ago and he is pretty strongly bonded to me. I am away during the day for classes and he usually sleeps during that time anyways, he is usually only up early morning waiting for food, a little in the afternoon, and more at night. I’ve also heard that some bonded bunnies aren’t as cuddly with their owners as single bunnies are. My boy is very cuddly with me, he likes to sit on the back of the couch with me and lean over and give me kisses and he lays all over me and begs for pets and follows me around.

I also couldn’t imagine having more than one vet bill wise right now. I love my rabbit to death, but he has cost a lot in vet bills this past year, I have spent well over $1000 on him, you never know what kind of health problems a bunny might have! My boy seemed perfectly healthy until about 6 months old when he developed malocclusion. It’s also harder to find places to live that accept any pets at all much less two.

It’s just some things to think about, I’ve had pets all my life and this is my first bunny and even at 21 I think they are a big responsibility because they aren’t like fish or hamsters, and they live for almost as long as some cats and dogs do.

And don’t forget, you’ll have college at some point too. Most college dorms do not allow pets, so you’d probably have to leave them at home for your mom to look after while you’re gone. I’d stick with one for now, until you’re out on your own.

You have to have a pic on your desktop, then you upload it to tinypic.com ( oops,it’s not .org)
Then you grab the HTML for website link, copy it, and paste it in the reply. It’ll look like this
