Bindi had been doing so well with his ears for the past few months. We had actually found something that works. One of his last infections was really stubborn and when we found drops that worked really well, we decided to do maintenance with the drops. I put 1 drop in each ear for 5 days, then off for 10 days. It worked really well and he hadn’t gotten any infections during this maintenance. While on his meds for e.c. the vet decided we didn’t want him to be on too many meds so we stopped the drops for the 30 day period of his Fenbendazole. Not surprisingly, he got another ear infection. So we did 7 days with the drops, re-check, still bacteria in the right ear, another 7 days, re-checked on Saturday and now there is bacteria in both ears again.  I’m out of drops and I got awful news: my vet said when she went to order some for me, she was informed the drops are discontinued!!!! Why discontinue a product that works???? I’m upset because we finally found a way to control these chronic infections and now it’s messed up. She’s currently looking for another product with similar ingredients. I’m very worried for the future of his ears.

He’s on Baytril Otic for 10 days and then re-check. Ear vibes needed, please. I’m trying to not stress about this. He and I have battled worse than ear infections but I just want healthy bunnies for a good long while. Before we found the drop maintenance solution, he was getting ear infections pretty much every month. Sigh…..

How frustrating – hopefully she can find an ear drop with similar qualities. Vibes for Bindi.

((((Serious ear vibes for Bindi)))) I’m sure your vet will find a way to get another product that will work for him, but agreed – it’s ridiculous to discontinue a good product. Do you think maybe another animal hospital may have some still in stock that you would be able to get in the meantime?

Drs Foster & Smith have the dog one listed in the online store. Is that the one you use?

If you get your hands on some and it still proves successful for Bindi, maybe your vet could get the formula made up.

                What were the previous drops?

I imagine that products and prescription products are discontinued for many reasons – cost of product, cost of production, cost, cost, cost…who knows. Maybe it’s only discontinued in Canada…whatever the reason, it can be totally frustrating.

Ah! My mistake. I was thinking it was the baytril otic you couldn’t get. Ignore my post above.

The drops that are discontinued are called “Optimyxin Plus Eye/Ear Solution”

What’s the active ingredient in that? Gentamycin?

Polysporin ear/eye drops has same amounts of polymyxin B and the gramicidin.

hmmm…I will have to mention that to my vet. She said something about how she was going to an exotics conference in January and she was going to inquire about those drops.

Even better is Neosporin Ophthalmic solution. It has the 3 antibiotics.

Maybe it’s only discontinued in Canada…

That could be true, Canada usually has more hoops drug companies have to jump through, so sometimes the company just pulls the drug because its not worth their time. I know we’re having a hard time with drug production period right now between human health care and veterinary care, so that could be a factor.

I hope your vet finds something that will work!!

He got the all clear!!!! Let’s hope we can keep them that way at least until my vet attends the exotic conference in January, where she will hopefully be able to find alternative drops.

Another option-maybe a pharmacist could compound the same drops for you from scratch?
