Are hedge apples on the okay foods list for buns to eat? We are camping under a hedge apple tree, lots of free fresh food if they can!

I’m not sure what hedge apples are. Are they just wild apples? I would avoid feeding any apples that are sour, like crab apples.

LPT – they are sometimes called horse apples or osage oranges.  They are a brainy-looking lime green “fruit” that many people believe repel insects.  In fact, they are sold around here for like $4 a pound in the fall to put in your basements.  I was excited to find this tree and bring home a big bag to put around my basement foundation.

I did find at least one site that recommended against feeding hedge apples to rabbits.  I was just curious, because the squirrels were eating them like crazy where we found them – would have been a really cheap source of fresh food over the winter if I could have collected them and used them as a treat throughout the winter.  No go, though, not willing to take any chances with my bun bud Roscoe!

Yes, i”d say when in doubt, don’t. Those squirrels are peeking in your windows watching Roscoe having slices of Macs and drooling.

We call them crab apples (or at least that’s what I’ve always called them) but I have never eaten one myself. Have you tasted them yourself…curious what they actually taste like.

Probably aren’t going to be something you find listed as they aren’t normally sold in grocery stores so I have no idea.

Crab apples are Blech! Very sour bitter yuck (I don’t care for them, can you tell?). I grew up with them – in the yard. Not considered a human food group. (Maybe they have speed in them, I mean, look at the way squirrels act, right?)

Hmmm…maybe I’m not thinking of crab apples but I am thinking of the apples that Theresa is describing…we never ate them – we just threw them at each other.
