        Hello

I have to give buster meds 2x a day. The vet showed me how she does it on the table and holding her head…of course, she is so squirmy for me. I could not keep her still and hold her head!

I tried another method of wrapping her in a towel and cradling her upside down. Her eyes closed a bit and she took it the first dose ok this way.
The 2nd dose pretty much spilled all over her b/c she wasnt swallowing it and it was just oozing out of her mouth. I made a mess. I felt terrible!

I am hopefully going to wean her off of this in the next few weeks, but any other advice? She wont take most of it in applesauce b/c she can smell right through to the simethicone and metacam! Also on reglan too.

The lactulose we were hiding in apple sauce and she loved that, but she is off of that now.

I have to learn how to do this, b/c I can’t keep going to the vet every time. We have everything we need here for GI stasis issues except an x-ray machine!

never never never give them meds with them upside down. they could inhale it and choke.

When my guys needed meds, i would sit down on the floor with my knees up, plop them in my lap, against my legs, then pull my knees to my chest til the bun couldn’t squirm much. then, in go the meds!

            oh great
I feel terrible. I cannot do it up right. She is so squirmy. I will try again though. If I have her head upright of sorts, but still cradled, isn’t that ok?

not if she is upside down, but if she is upright yes. you could also try kneeling on the floor, and trappign her between your legs. don’t be afraid to squeeze a bit to keep her there, just don’t squeeze too much

I have had to give Chacha baytril 4 times.. and I would wrap her brattiness in a towel, and put her on the bathroom counter. I would hold her head.. and I would put the syringe in just.. a little. I’m not sure if Buster likes her medicine or not. Sometimes Chacha would try to sqirum inside of the towel.

I felt bad at first, but I learned that it is for their own good.. they need to take the meds to be healthy.

That is what is so hard…holding her head…she moves it so much to get away. She did go squirming in her towel!
                  She doesnt like the medicine.

So if she’s on her back, but head is upright–sort of like cradling a baby…i found this video and found it to be like what i’d want to do,

That video definitely has the bunny in a more upright position and that is much better. Also, it’s best of you are able to put the syringe in from the side of the mouth if your bunny does not take it willingly.  Less chance of it squirting into the back of their throat.

                      Thank you!

Well, tonight’s round didn’t go well. She tried jumping out of my arms, flinching her head so hard every which way.

I did it the ‘normal’ way on the counter eventually, but still spilled a bunch. I hope this doesnt have to go on for long.

She doesn’t like the pumpkin either

I try talking to her soft and sweetly, have a raisin nearby…she just hates this.

I’m kind of having anxiety if you haven’t noticed. I feel like I can’t do anything to prevent this from happening again to her and its going to keep happening

The vets are already calling her the million dollar bunny…..

I do the upright position w/my medium size rabbits. A tiny rabbit, this will not work.

I think the best thing is that you take control and be confident. Go to a bathroom and sit on the floor and hold Buster in the upright position.

How much does Buster weigh anyway – this will dictate what position you can actually do to give oral medications.

                          she’s only 2.15 lbs.
So putting her on the counter isn’t better than the floor in the bathroom?
                          Thank you.

I think putting her in your lap is the best then for this small size. Have her firmly in your lap and stick he syringe in. It takes practice and confidence but you can do this!

Try mushing up some banana and putting it in that. Banana is a strong smell so it might mask it better than applesauce. The other thing I thought about is fruit baby food. It’s runnier than actual banana so it would mix better, and you can buy the “nothing added” kind.
